GHMC gets nod to collect profession tax

Hyderabad, August 26: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will start collecting professional tax, after chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy gave green signal for transferring of rights to the GHMC from the Commercial Taxes department on Thursday.

Presently, the Commercial Taxes department is collecting professional tax.
As per the government norms, 95 percent of tax collections have to be transferred to local bodies.

Ramzan shopping

Hyderabad, August 26: To facilitate shopping on the eve of Ramzan, city police have decided not to allow any vehicle including RTC buses to ply on the road from Madina to Charminar.
The road between Madina and Charminar will be closed to all traffic till September 1.

Police have also imposed several restrictions applicable till noon on September 1

Intruders set fire to articles in shrine

Hyderabad, August 26: Tension prevailed near a place of worship in Picket area after unidentified intruders broke into it and set some of the articles on the premises on fire on Thursday.
The incident took place in the place of worship located in a small area at Picket.

The authorities closed the premises on Wednesday night around 7 p.m.
but when they came on Thursday around 1 p.m., they found that the place had been broken into.

“They found the door lock broken and the articles inside were burnt down,” Mahankali division assistant commissioner of police G P Vasu Sena said.

Axis not off the hook yet: DCGI

Hyderabad, August 26: Even as the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) lifted the ban on Axis Clinicals, a sister concern of Aurobindo Pharma Ltd, sources said the company was still under the scanner over quality issues.
“We are studying the report and examining some of the documents.
Evidently, there are procedural lapses.
But we still have to establish a case,” a DCGI official in Delhi told Express.

Two arrested for illegal sale of drugs

Hyderabad, August 26: Police arrested two persons for selling sedative drugs illegally and seized 4,500 ampules of the drug here on Thursday.
Srihari Rakesh, who runs the Suma Medical Corporation at Kacheguda was used to sell drugs illegally to one, Mohd Feroz, who runs Motani’s medical shop at Basheerbagh.

The sedative drug, Pentwin, used by authorised medical practitioners as anesthesia dose was being sold by Srihari.
As per the manufacturers label, Pentwin is a schedule-H drug which should not be sold without doctor’s prescription.

Multi-level marketing rackets busted; 4 held

Hyderabad, August 26: A US-returned mechanical engineer was nabbed on Thursday, for organising multi-level marketing in the guise of selling Aloe Vera products manufactured by him. A doctor of Prime Hospital is also a key operative in the MLM scheme, police said.

Y Sirish Reddy (31) set up his own firm M/s Yeturu Bio-Tech Ltd after completing his Masters in mechanical engineering from the US.
He planned to cultivate, process, manufacture and market Aloe Vera products and was into the business since 2006.

To market his products, Sirish Reddy used the MLM system.

HMWS&SB proposes to hike water tariff

Hyderabad, August 26: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has decided to urge the state government to increase water tariff, to sustain the Board in the long-run.

HMWS&SB authorities are hopeful the chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy who is also the chairman of Water Board would give nod for increase in water tariff for commercial consumers during the board meeting on August 26.
Water tariff hike for all consumers was last done in 2002 and for bulk consumers in 2007.

Eye donation fortnight kicked off

Hyderabad, August 26: The 15-day long 26th National Eye Donation Camps organised by the department of health, medical and family welfare kicked off in the state on Thursday. The camp, which is held annually from Aug 25 to Sept 8, aims at collecting corneas from donors.

In a statement here, state director of Public Health and Family Welfare said that the main aim of the camp is to spread awareness among the public on the importance and necessity of eye donation.

Man nabbed for preparing fake income tax returns

Hyderabad, August 26: The central zone taskforce team apprehended a man who indulged in preparation and supply of fake income tax returns, bank statements, educational certificates etc.

Police nabbed 34 year old Aslam Gowani of Barkatpura who hailed from Maharashtra State. He pursed Photoshop course from a computer institute at Hyderabad after completing his graduation. After which he worked as accountant in various private firms till the year 2003.

Hyderabad, August 26: Though city police have started cracking the whip on clubs after the suicide of a gambler at the Country Club, managements of these businesses say they have been running their activities for years, right under the nose of police. Sources say police get their due amount to allow the clubs to run their activities.

The managements of these recreation spots, spas and clubs reportedly offer ‘mamool’ to police for organising activities like gambling and card games inside their premises.

Farooq Abdullah wants to see “Allah in Modi’s eyes”

Ahmedabad, August 26: Praising the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for state’s performance in the renewable energy sector, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah today said he wished for the day when he would see Allah in Modi’s eyes.

He was speaking at a function to launch Indian Fund for Sustainable Energy (INFUSE) at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), where Modi too was present. Lailatul Qadr conference at Moghalpura playground

BJP MLA to be quizzed in Shehla Masood murder case

Bhopal, August 26: BJP MLA Dhruv Narayan Singh is among the 18 persons who will be quizzed in connection with the murder of RTI activist Shehla Masood, police sources said on Friday.

Singh is among the 18 persons who were either in contact with Shehla or who spoke to her regularly on her cellphone, they said.

A notice would soon be sent to the Bhopal MLA, who would be called and his statement recorded, the sources said.

Shehla was murdered in broad daylight on August 16 in front of her Koh-e-Fiza residence here.

New Delhi, August 26: Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday welcomed the struggle of social activist Anna Hazare for a powerful anti-corruption law, but said one legislation was not enough to fight graft.

The campaign by 74-year-old Hazare has sparked the biggest protests in decades from a middle class angered by endemic bribes. He has emerged as a lightning rod for widespread anger at a political class seen as arrogant and out of touch.

Naxals kill trader in Chhattisgarh

Rajnandgaon, August 26: Naxals shot dead a grain trader and torched his vehicle in Madanwada area near here when he was on his way to a local market, police said on Thursday.

IG RK Veej said that the trader, Vineet Jain, was travelling with two teachers and a shoe seller to the weekly bazaar in Madanwada when his vehicle was intercepted by three Naxals.

According to the survivors, the Naxals hijacked the vehicle and detained Jain, while asking the others to flee.

A few minutes later, they fatally shot Jain, set the vehicle afire and escaped into the dense jungles.

Salman Khan flies to the US for treatment

Mumbai, August 26: There was considerable speculation over Salman Khan’s health. Some reports stated that he had a minor cardiac problem while some claimed that he would be going to the US for treatment of a spinal condition called sciatica.

AP Cong undeterred by pro-Jagan MLAs resignations

Hyderabad, August 26: The ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday said it is ready to face by-polls if the resignations of 26 MLAs, who quit in support of Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, are accepted.

“Is it preventable? If elections come, we have to be prepared. If resignations are made, we have to see the alternatives. We have to do our work in the interest of the party,” State Congress President Botsa Satyanarayana told reporters here.

He was asked if the state Congress is gearing up to face the polls if it becomes inevitable.

Attacks across Iraq kill 14, wound dozens

Basra, August 26: A car bomb blew up near a Shi’ite mosque in the southern oil hub of Basra Thursday, killing four people and wounding dozens, security officials said, as a wave of blasts killed at least 14 across Iraq.

The bomber targeted people as they emerged from the Dawood al-Ashoor mosque in southern Basra’s Abu Khasib district, according to Ali Ghanim al-Maliki, head of the Basra Provincial Council security committee, who put the toll at four dead and 34 wounded.

Maliki said the car bomb was parked nearby but other security sources said it was detonated by a suicide bomber.

2G scam: Chidambaram as guilty as Raja, claims Subramanian Swamy

New Delhi, August 26: Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy was Friday allowed by a Delhi court to conduct his private complaint in the 2G scam.
