Three pilgrims killed in accident in Patna

Patna, August 01: Three people were killed and six seriously injured when their vehicle collided with a speeding bus in Bihar’s Nawada district early Monday, police said.

The pilgrims were on their way to a famous Shiva temple in Deogarh, Jharkhand, when their sports utility vehicle (SUV) met with an accident near Mayabigha village.

Saudi arrested for cheating job aspirants

Hyderabad, August 01: A Saudi national was arrested on Sunday for allegedly luring overseas job aspirants from Hyderabad on the pretext of providing high salaried jobs and cheating them.

The accused, identified as Alawi Asaad Tunsi, promised and recruited unemployed youths of Hyderabad with high salaried jobs in Saudi Arabia. However, he later “cheated” them by offering low salaried employment, they said.

Ranjan Mathai to take charge as foreign secretary

New Delhi, August 01:Ranjan Mathai,India’s former ambassador to France, will assume charge as India’sforeign secretary in his South Block office on Monday morning.

Mathai will hold office for a two-year term.

He succeeds Nirupama Rao, who has been named India’s ambassador to the US.

Rakesh Sood,India’s ambassador to Nepal, will succeed Mathai as New Delhi’s envoy in Paris.

Adhaar card not needed for LPG refill in AP

Hyderabad, August 01: Aadhaar card number is not required for getting a new cooking gas connection or booking a refill cylinder in the state.

In case any gas agency insists on the consumer to provide them the Aadhaar card number or the proof of having applied for the card, one can lodge a complaint with the civil supplies authorities.

Further, the government has clarified that the Aadhaar number is only an option but not mandatory for obtaining any benefits under government schemes.

‘Islamists may be active within Libyan rebels’

London, August 01: British Defence Secretary Liam Fox on Sunday warned that Islamist militants may have been behind last week’s assassination of rebel Libyan military chief General Abdel Fatah Yunis.

Fox told BBC Radio that the death, attributed by the British press to al Qaeda elements within the rebel movement, remained a mystery but that militant influence within Libya was inevitable.

“It’s not yet clear who actually carried out the killing,” he said.

India not alert despite terror attacks: Sadhvi Ritambhara

Kolkata, August 01: Right-wing Hindu leader Sadhvi Ritambhara Sunday said unlike the US, India was coming under terror attacks repeatedly as it had failed to become alert.

“There was one terrorist attack in the US in 2001. Since then, they have become very alert. So there have not been any more terror strikes there. But that is not the case with India. And so we repeatedly come under terror attacks,” Ritambhara told reporters here.

New Delhi, August 01: Opposing the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill, 2010 passed by the Lok Sabha, an organisation working for the protection of Waqf properties on Sunday said that the Central government should address the concerns of Muslim organisations before presenting the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

“A resolution was passed in a meeting here today asking the Centre to give due consideration to the opinion of various Muslim organisations and Ulemas before presenting the Bill in the Rajya Sabha,” All India Waqf Protection Board (AIWFB) Chairman Shamayle Navi said.

Who will be next Karnataka CM?

Bangalore, August 01: Karnataka will have to wait till August 3, 11 am, to know who their next chief minister is. Bharatiya Janata Party observer, Dharmender Pradhan, said in Bengaluru that the new chief minister of Karnataka will be elected on August 3 at 11 am.

Pradhan, however, refused to comment on who the leader would be. He said that the process was on and everyone will have to wait till August 3.

Youth body found in pieces

New Delhi, August 01: The body of a youth, missing since saturday, was found chopped in four pieces, near a railway station in south Delhi Sunday, police said.

The young man has been identified as Vishal Gupta (25), a resident of Mangolpuri in north Delhi.

The body pieces were found lying on the tracks near Okhla railway station, police said.

Gupta left his house Saturday to meet a friend in Punjabi Bagh but did not return till late evening.

His family later registered a case of a missing person in Mangolpuri police station.

Egypt promises speedy trial of Mubarak

Cairo, August 01: The head of the Cairo Criminal Court has promised a speedy trial of the former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak and members of his family.

Judge Ahmed Refaat says Mubarak’s trial would be aired live on Egyptian television to “reassure people of the [credibility of the] process.”

“The trial would be held daily until its conclusion,” the judge said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Egyptian authorities have decided to move the trial of the former president to a military academy on the outskirts of Cairo.

Mullen: US may fail to pay its troops

Washington, August 01: The US government may not pay wages to its soldiers if the country defaults on its debt, says Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Mullen said that many troops are living paycheck to paycheck, adding that “if paychecks were to stop, it would have a devastating impact.”

Several troops at the Kandahar Air Field have been concerned about the budget debate taking place in Washington in which Mullen stated that Pentagon officials were planning for a potential default.

‘PM under Lokpal is not advisable’

New Delhi, August 01: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that bringing the PM under the purview of the proposed Lokpal legislation is something that would “not be advisable”. The PM’s observations here on Sunday came even as social activist Anna Hazare, who has been spearheading the movement for having the institution of the Lokpal once again, expressed his determination to go ahead with his proposed fast on August 16. The bill is expected to be introduced in Parliament on August 3.

Obama announces deal on debt limit

Washington, August 01: The US lawmakers reach an agreement on raising the ceiling on the country’s public debt limit, which President Barack Obama says is not the deal of his choice.

On Sunday, the chief executive announced the accord, saying “First part of this agreement will cut about one trillion dollars in spending over the next 10 years…cuts that both parties had agreed to early on in this process.”

“The result would be the lowest level of annual domestic spending since Dwight Eisenhower was president,” he added, referring to the 34th US president’s 1953-1961 tenure.

Germany warns of Norway-style attacks

Bangkok, August 01: A top German security official warns that the recent terror attacks in Norway could serve as a blueprint for other anti-Muslim militants across Europe.

“This could serve as a blueprint for copycats, from the point of view of a terrorist; Anders Breivik has meticulously and carefully considered how to avoid coming into the view of the security services. This … is an extreme concern for us right now,” Alexander Eisvogel, vice-president of Germany’s domestic anti-terrorist agency said in an interview with Der Spiegel magazine.

4 suspected detained in 13/7 blasts case

Mumbai, August 01: The anti-terrorism squad (ATS) detained four members of the banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) on Saturday night in the 13/7 triple blasts case. Investigators believe the four are affiliated to terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM).

Sources said the detained members are from Pipe Road in Kurla where the SIMI headquarters was once located. They are being detained at the Kalachowkie office of the ATS.
