CPUs, monitor stolen from AP Secretariat

Hyderabad, August 02: Two central processing units (CPU) and one computer monitor have been stolen from the Finance Department located in the ”D” Block of the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat (a high security zone) here, police said today.

The theft came to light when the staff in Finance Department came for duty at around 10.30 am today and noticed that two CPUs and one computer monitor were missing, they said.

Woman held for duping people of Rs 80 lakh

Hyderabad, August 02: Task Force sleuths arrested a woman on Monday, who was allegedly involved in cheating nearly 60 persons of Rs 80 lakh on the pretext of providing jobs in the State Bank of India and false promises to get bank loans.

K Raghuram Reddy, additional deputy commissioner of police, Task Force said that Putla Sandhya Rani alias Rani, a resident of Rajan Goud Nilayam, Sri Venkateshwara Enclave, Old Bowenapally collected Rs 80 lakh from people with false promises of providing loans and job opportunities in a nationalised bank.

Marriage registration to be must under law

New Delhi, August 02: The Delhi government is preparing a new legislation that will make it mandatory for all newly weds to get their marriage registered.

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday discussed a draft of the proposed Delhi Marriage Registration Bill and decided to make some changes to it before sending it to the Home ministry for approval, an official said.

The Bill proposes that all marriages in the city and of Delhi residents will have to be registered with the Delhi government.

12 year old boy was tortured and set on fire

Lucknow, August 02: A 12-year-old boy was tortured and subsequently set on fire, allegedly by a neighbourhood family, under suspicious circumstances in Mughalsarai police station area of Chandauli district on Monday.

The victim, who suffered over 70 per cent burn injuries, is battling for life at a Varanasi hospital and is not in a condition to narrate what exactly happened.

The police have arrested three of the accused identified as Dinesh Vishwakarma, his mother Dei Devi and sister Maya on charges of illegal detention, causing hurt and attempt to murder.

‘India is a shit hole’: Australian radio host

Melbourne, August 02: An Australian radio show host is facing criticism from the Indian community over his reportedly derogatory comments on India and Hinduism, in which he called river Ganga a ‘junkyard’.

A Sydney-based Indian group is seeking an apology from the radio station following a report that host Kyle Sandilands made anti-India comments on his “Kyle and Jacky O” show.

According to a report by a local ethnic TV programme ‘Desi Kangaroos’, Sandilands said “India is a shit hole” and went further to describe river Ganga as a ‘junkyard’.

KKR in a tight spot over Telangana row

Hyderabad, August 02: Home Minister P Chidambaram on Monday informed media personnel that the Centre was referring the issue of creation of a separate state of Telangana back to the Andhra Pradesh assembly to rebuild a consensus.

The Andhra Pradesh assembly had passed a resolution in January last year, seeking deletion of Clause 14(F) from the Presidential Order for the purpose.

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has decided to refer back the resolution to the assembly, Chidambaram said.

Two arrested with Rs.2 crore antique idol

Lucknow, August 02: Two men who worked for a Nepal-based gang involved in smuggling antique idols have been arrested along with an `ashtdhatu’ (eight-metal) idol worth over Rs.2 crore in Uttar Pradesh’s Siddharthnagar district, police said Monday.

Abdul Hannan and Hayat Ali were nabbed with Lord Shiva’s idol in Itwa area late Sunday.

“Preliminary investigations reveal the two have been involved in smuggling of antique idols for over last five years,” police inspector Dinesh Yadav told reporters in Siddharthnagar, some 350-km from Lucknow.

Ahmedabad, August 02: Three days ago a 17-year-old girl alighted from a bus at Gita Mandir terminus. She was clutching a small bag. Her eyes reflected a strange dilemma and fear. It was clear that she was not sure where to go.

A good Samaritan, Savita Patel, a resident of Nehrunagar, saw the girl and realized something was amiss. When Patel asked her where she wanted to go, the girl wouldn’t reply. Not wishing to leave a minor girl at the bus stop, the woman took her home. For two days the girl refused to say anything about her family.

As the new moon was sighted last night, Muslims made final preparations for a month of prayer, fasting and reflection.

Thousands of lights and decorative crescent moons, stars and lanterns began to glow along bridges, public gardens, the Corniche and the capital’s busy roads as residents made last-minute stops at shopping centres and grocery stores to stock up for the first iftar of Ramadan tonight.

Pass fresh resolution on Hyderabad: Chidambaram

Hyderabad, August 02: The Centre on Monday asked the Andhra Pradesh government to pass a fresh resolution in the Assembly to delete Clause (f) of para 14 of the 1975 Presidential Order to make Hyderabad a non-free zone for purposes of employment.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram told journalists here that the last resolution was passed by the Assembly in January 2010 and “it is now August 2011.” He said: “We want to be absolutely sure on consensus in the State Assembly.” (In Hyderabad Chief Minister Kirankumar Reddy said that it was not possible immediately to pass the resolution.)

Women ‘spend 100,000 pounds on make-up in lifetime’

London, August 02: That’s a shade over 2,000 pounds for every year of adulthood, or nearly 40 pounds in an average week. And, 57 per cent say they would ditch their partner rather than go without make-up, according to the study in Britain.

Two thirds of the 2,200 women surveyed said it would cost up to 550 pounds to replace their make-up collection. One in 10 said it’d be 700 pounds, the ‘Daily Express’ reported.

UK Muslim lads drew burqas on scantily-clad gals

London, August 02: Two Muslim teenagers in Britain have been convicted for admitting to drawing burqas on advertisements of scantily-clad models.

Mohammed Hasnath and Muhammed Tahir, both 18, used black paint to draw the traditional headdress over a model in a poster for Lynx deodorant.

They said it was a ‘sin’ for the woman to remain uncovered and they were ‘just trying to do good’.

They also painted over faces in several other advertisements, including one for the Nicolas Cage film Drive Angry.

Both of them have been convicted of criminal damage.

Kochi, August 01: The Kerala High Court on Monday said that sex with young girls had become the “luxury” of the rich and rejected the bail pleas of eight accused in a case relating to the rape of a minor girl allegedly by 100-odd men over a period of time.

“Sex with young girls had become the luxury of the rich and the hunt for virgins had gained momentum. This may be because of fear of AIDS,” Justice K T Shankaran observed.

London, August 01:If you wish to avoid looking older than your age, try relishing grapes. A new study has found this fruit could protect against skin cancer and prevent premature ageing.

The study has shown that compounds found in the fruit protect cells from the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun – the leading environmental cause of skin cancer, Daily Mail reported.

Ultra violet (UV) rays increase the levels of reactive oxygen species – harmful molecules which damage the cells – in the skin.

Five killed, 10 hurt in Manipur blast

Imphal, August 01:At least five persons, including acstudent, were killed and 10 others injured when suspected militants exploded a powerful bomb at a shop in Manipur’sImphal West district today, officials said.

The bomb was hurled in Sangakpham area on theoutskirts of the capital Imphal around 2.30 pm where peoplewere buying things from the shop.

The explosion was so powerful that its impact smashedwindowpanes of some nearby houses, officials said, adding thecondition of some of the injured was stated to be serious.

The injured were admitted to nearby hospitals.
