MiG-21 crashes in Rajasthan; pilot killed

New Delhi, August 03: An Indian Air Force (IAF) combat pilot was killed in a MiG fighter jet crash near Bikaner in Rajasthan on Tuesday.

“The MiG-21 Type-96 crashed today. The pilot has died,” an IAF officer said here.

The pilot’s identity will not be released till his family is informed.

The crash is under investigation, the officer said, adding a court of inquiry will be ordered.

MiG-21 jets of IAF have earned the sobriquet ‘flying coffin’ following a string of crashes.

GHMC to take up development works in Goshamahal

Riyadh, August 03: Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior Prince Naif, Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman, and a large number of royal family members and senior officials attended the funeral prayer for Princess Sultana bint Turki Al-Sudairy at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.

Other prominent personalities who attended the funeral were Prince Sattam, deputy governor of Riyadh, Prince Muqrin, chief of general intelligence, and Prince Muhammad bin Fahd, governor of the Eastern Province. Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh, the grand mufti, led the prayer.

Hyderabad, August 03: Even as the city police were widening the dragnet for him, Chiranjeevi’s estranged son-in-law Sirish Bharadwaj managed to evade them and hid in an ashram at Medchal on the city outskirts before his surrender. He was also reported to have taken shelter earlier in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Shirdi and Visakhapatnam. After dodging the police for long, he finally surrendered before the Nampally Criminal Court last week.

Plane to take Mubarak to Cairo for trial

Cairo, August 03: A plane set to transfer Egypt’s former ruler Hosni Mubarak to the capital Cairo to stand trial has arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh where he has been under arrest in a hospital since April.

“The aircraft that will take Mubarak to the police academy has landed in Sharm el-Sheikh,” Egypt’s public television said on Wednesday.

The trial of Mubarak who was forced to resign in February has been a key demand of protesters, AFP reported.

Mubarak is charged with corruption and ordering the killing of protesters — a charge that carries the death penalty.

New York, August 03: The developer of an Islamic community center and mosque near the site of the September 11 attacks in New York says it may take years to determine what kind of project Muslims and non-Muslims want.

Sharif El-Gamal tells The New York Times that decisions will be made after consultation with lower Manhattan residents and New York City-area Muslims.

El-Gamal says that in the past year he’s built relationships with neighborhood groups. He’s recruited a September 11 victim’s relative to his advisory board and sought donors from around the country.

Chidambaram has lost his mental balance: Etala

Hyderabad, August 03: Condemning the statement of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram that a fresh resolution was needed to be passed by the state Assembly for the deletion of Clause 14 F from the Presidential Orders, Telangana Rashtra Samithi Floor Leader Etela Rajender on Tuesday said that the ‘irresponsible and irrelevant statement’ were insulting the Telangana people.

10 lakh acres land to irrigate for SC, STs

Hyderabad, August 03: Andhra Pradesh government will launch an ambitious scheme ‘Indira Jala Prabha’ on Gandhi Jayanthi day to bring 10 lakh acres of land belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) under irrigation.

A sum of Rs 1,600 crore will be spent under the new scheme that would benefit five lakh SC and ST families, the State government said today.

Saudi billionaire to build world’s tallest tower

Jeddah, August 03: Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal unveiled plans on Tuesday to build the world’s tallest tower in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, signing a 4.6 billion riyal ($1.23 billion) contract with Bin Laden Group.

The proposed tower, which will rise more than 1,000 metres and take just over five years to complete, is the centrepiece of the planned Kingdom City development being built outside Jeddah by Prince Alwaleed’s Kingdom Holding.

Computers stolen from Secretariat

Hyderabad, August 03: A few computers and valuable documents were stolen by unidentified persons from the finance department located in the D-Block of the Secretariat here on Monday.

“Around 10.30 am, finance department staff reached their office and before they got into work they found that some computers and PCs, which were installed on their tables, went missing. They alerted initially local security personal. Later, they lodged a complaint with the Saifabad police,’’ K Shanker, detective inspector, said.

Girl set ablaze for resisting rape attempt

Lucknow, August 03: Two youths allegedly set ablaze a teenage dalit girl when she resisted their rape attempt in Sitapur district, 90 km from Lucknow, on Tuesday morning. With 50% burns, the girl, a class XII student, is battling for life in the district hospital. The incident took place in Johri village of Ramkopt police circle in Sitapur district.

The victim’s father has alleged that the five youths — Tillu, Billu, Ajay, Dharmendra and Tuiyan — all local residents, had been passing obscene remarks at the victim for the past few days. But, the girl usually overlooked their comments.

Kiran govt wholly to be blamed for inaction on 14 F: Nagam

Hyderabad, August 03: Telugu Desam Party leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy blamed the N Kiran Kumar Reddy government for its inaction in so far as the deletion of Clause 14 F is concerned.

“In spite of a unanimous resolution having been passed on the Floor of the House in 2010 during the Rosaiah government, the Centre was now opposed to the said deletion of the Clause,” Mr Janardhan Reddy said.

“If the Centre demanded another resolution on the said Clause, it is only because of the inaction of the current government,” he told media persons at the Secretariat.

Hyderabad, August 03:  An obsessed youngster stabbed the brother of a 25-year-old girl and attempted suicide at Dayanandnagar in Malkajgiri here on Monday.

According to the police, E Murali (30), a resident of Sanjeevareddy Nagar, descended on the house of Bharani Soujanya (25) late in the evening with his oft-rejected marriage proposal. Soujanya’s brother Satish Chandra and his wife Lavanya were at home at the time and they did not let Murali inside.

Ensure transparency in PMS disbursal: CM

Hyderabad, August 03: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed the officials to chalk out an action plan to release the 2011-12 Post Matric scholarships on time.

He said funds, if need be, will be generated specially towards the scheme but the state government will fulfil the commitments given to the students and parents towards the PMS.

The state government now requires Rs 3805 crore only for 2011-12 towards the PMS after clearing all the backlog arrears.
