Biography on CM released

Hyderabad, July 06: A book on Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy ‘Kiran Kumar Shathakam’ was released by Andhra Pradesh magazine editor Vallishwar Rao at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Authored by Andhra Pradesh Press Academy Chairman Tirumalagiri Surrender, the book, accompanied by photographs, highlights the work of the Chief Minister and the development activities which have taken place during his tenure.

The book was scheduled to be released by Information and Public Relations Minister D K Aruna but in her absence, Mr Vallishwar did the honours.

Cong alone to be blamed for T tangle: CPM MLA

Hyderabad, July 06: The ruling party is by itself the only one to be blamed for the inordinate delay in resolving the Telangana issue, which claimed scores of lives and resulted in lopsided development, said CPM Legislator from Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district Julakanti Rangareddy on Tuesday.

Addressing media persons at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Mr Julakanti Rangareddy criticized the Congress party which had been postponing a decision to settle the issue with an ulterior motive.

Teenaged boy rapes minor cousin

New Delhi, July 06: A teenaged boy has been arrested for raping his minor cousin in west Delhi, police said Tuesday.

“The accused is 17-year-old and raped his 10-year-old cousin on July 1 when he lured her on the pretext of playing and raped her at Maurya Enclave,” said a police official.

Victim’s parents are labourers from Uttar Pradesh.

“The accused used to live near the family of victim with whom he used to play earlier. He lured her on the pretext of playing and then raped her. After coming home, the victim narrated her ordeal to her parents,” the official added.

Tension in OU, bandh peaceful elsewhere in city

Hyderabad, July 06: Except for some tense moments in the Osmania University campus, the 48-hour bandh called by the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee to mount pressure on the Centre to announce a decision on separate Telangana state continued to be peaceful in the state Capital.

Tension prevailed in Osmania University for some time after a group of about 100 students pelted stones at the police, leading to the police resorting to lobbing tear gas shells at them.

Resignations a conspiracy by vested elements: Raghuveera

Vijayawada, July 06: Hinting that the mass resignations were part of ‘some vested elements’ conspiracy to destabilise the Congress government in the state, Revenue Minister N Raghuveera Reddy on Tuesday said that the separate statehood issue could have been solved through dialogue.

Talking to media persons after reviewing of works of his Department in Vijayawada, Mr Raghuveera Reddy said alleged that the Congress Legislators from Telangana had fallen into a trap set by the ‘vested elements who want to destabilise the government.

Cop shot dead by criminals

Lucknow, July 06: A policeman was gunned down here Tuesday by a group of car-borne criminals during police’s effort to apprehend them, an official said.

Sachin Kumar, a constable in the SOG (Special Operation Group), was shot dead by three criminals in Jhinjhana town along the Uttar Pradesh-Haryana border.

“Acting on a tip-off, we intercepted the criminals while they were trying to flee after committing a loot,” Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar told reporters in Muzaffarnagar, some 350-km from Lucknow.

Two TDP, TRS MPs resign, Shankar Rao follows suit

New Delhi, July 06: Telugu Desam Party MPs from Telangana Nama Nageshwar Rao and Ramesh Rathod on Tuesday met Speaker Meira Kumar and submitted their resignations from the Lok Sabha, even as Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao and party MP Vijayashanti faxed in their papers.

The resignation by the four MPs came a day after their counterparts from the Congress resigned on Monday to mount on the Centre to take an early decision on the separate statehood demand.

Azad hints at long drawn consultation process

New Delhi, July 06: In a sure sign that the Centre would not be rushed to taking an early decision on the separate Telangana statehood demand, Congress In-Charge of Andhra Pradesh Affairs Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday said that an all-party conclave is unlikely to take place soon.

Talking to a private television channel, Mr Azad said that the Centre will first talk to the people of Andhra Pradesh. “We will talk to the leaders of other political parties and the people of the different regions. We will not jump straightaway to an all-party meeting,” the Union Minister said.

TRS MLAs resign, BJP, CPI to follow suit

A Muslim veil is no excuse for discrimination

New Zealand, July 06: New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says Muslim women wearing veils should not face discrimination, after two Saudi women were reportedly ordered off buses due to their attire.

New Zealand has had a long history of racist attitudes toward non-whites.

Saudi diplomats in New Zealand had raised concerns with the government after two separate incidents in Auckland in which women were told to get off buses because they were wearing full-face veils, the Dominion Post newspaper reported.

IRAQ: A bad place for children

Decades of war and international sanctions have turned Iraq into one of the worst places for children in the Middle East and North Africa, with around 3.5 million living in poverty, 1.5 million under the age of five undernourished and 100 infants dying every day, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warns.

The government can and should do more for children, said Sikander Khan, the outgoing UNICEF representative in Iraq, in a 30 June interview with the UN Assistance Mission to Iraq.

Woman’s daring attempt to sneak lover out of prison

London, July 05: A woman was caught trying to sneak her common-law-husband out of a Mexican prison in a suitcase following a conjugal visit.

A spokesman for police in the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo says staff at the prison in Chetumal noticed that the woman seemed nervous and was pulling a black, wheeled suitcase that looked bulky.

Spokesman Gerardo Campos said that prison guards checked the bag of 19-year-old Maria del Mar Arjona and found inmate Juan Ramirez Tijerina curled up inside in the fetal position.

Azad’s remarks on homosexuality spark outrage

New Delhi, July 05: Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s controversial comments that homosexuality is “unnatural” and a “disease” sparked an outrage among rights activists and the gay community.

Protests were also held on the steps of the Town Hall in Bangalore against Mr. Azad’s remarks with several activists carrying the multi-colour rainbow flag which symbolises gay culture. Some activists said Mr. Azad’s assessment was “unscientific and irrational” and stressed the need for a change in the community mindset.

Father kills daughter for rejecting old groom

Kaithal, July 05: THE GHOST of honour killings refuses to leave Punjab and Haryana as two more heinous cases were reported from there.

A 17- year- old girl was allegedly murdered by her father, Naresh, when she refused to go with a 50- year- old groom chosen by him in Kasan village of Haryana’s Kaithal district.

Sources said Naresh, who belongs to an economically weaker section of the Jats, had married off his daughter to Jaiveer from Hisar’s Koth village. In lieu, Jaiveer got his niece married to Naresh’s brother, Inder.

Kidnapped Al-Khobar girl recounts her ordeal

Al-Khobar, July 5 – Teenage girl Ahd Abdurrahman Ahmad could not restrain her tears while narrating her rescue after being kidnapped last week.
Talking to Okaz/Saudi Gazette she thanked Almighty Allah for her return to her family home. “Thanks to Allah and thanks to the young man who rescued me and covered me with his Shmagh (Saudi head gear) to protect me from the gaze of onlookers, I am back in my home,” she said with tears in his eyes.
The kidnappers had taken away her abaya and head cover.
Ahd said she would be grateful to the young man all her life.

CIB wants action against irresponsive govt bodies

Jeddah, July 5 – The Control and Investigation Board (CIB) has asked Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah, to direct the region’s government bodies to respond to its observations, reported Al-Hayat Arabic newspaper Sunday.
It said lack of cooperation by some government agencies has delayed various actions to tackle government shortcomings, and consequently cost the state treasury huge monetary loss.

Woman eyes top post at Hail lit. club

Hail, July 5 – A recently elected administrative manager at the board of directors of Hail Literary Club is running for the post of chairperson or vice chairperson at the organization.
In an interview with Okaz/Saudi Gazette, Aysha Al-Shammari said it is the legitimate right of any person with qualifications to serve the body.
She said she was quite hopeful of getting elected as administrative manager as did the four other women who were successful in making to the board.

NSHR calls on govt bodies to streamline work procedures

Jeddah, July 5 – Dr. Muflih Al-Qahtani, chairman of the National Society for Human Rights, has disclosed that some authorities, including the Civil Status Administration, are slow in processing transactions they receive.
In a wide-ranging interview, he also said the NSHR has written to many authorities to rectify the status of “Al-Bidoon” – people who do not hold identification papers – so as to end their suffering.
Commenting on the issue of increasing prices of essential commodities, Al-Qahtani said a plan was under way to launch a national center to monitor prices.

Weapon used in Saudi diplomat’s killing found

Jeddah, July 5 – The weapon used in the assassination of Hassan Al-Qahtani, the Saudi diplomat, in Karachi last month, has been found, it was revealed by Rehman Malik, Pakistan’s Interior Minister.
Malik told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that the results of the investigations will be announced soon.
Malik said he had briefed Prince Naif Bin Abdul Aziz, Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior, about the case during their meeting in Jeddah. However, he refused to reveal more details about the meeting.

9 burglars held in Qassim

Qassim, July 5 – Security forces here have arrested nine people suspected of being involved in 287 home burglaries and stealing money and items worth more than SR5.5 million.
Police revealed that one of the suspects, who worked at a gold mall, was responsible for hiding the stolen money and goods.
A police spokesman said the suspects admitted their crimes and said they hid the stolen money inside the minarets of mosques in remote areas, in flagrant disrespect of the sanctity of these holy places.
Some items were hidden in abandoned buildings and fields, he added.
