Hyderabad,July 06:After a brief lull, violence returned to the Osmania University (OU) campus on Tuesday, the first day of the 48-hour bandh call given by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC). Several students and a few policemen sustained minor injuries in pitched battles fought all through the day on the campus.

SC uphelds life term for father who raped daughter

New Delhi, July 06: A shocked Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the life imprisonment awarded to a man, who along with his son, repeatedly raped his 14-year-old daughter till her mother found her pregnant and lodged a complaint with police. Now, both the accused Syed Isaq and his son, the girl’s elder brother — will cool their heels in jail for life. A bench comprising Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan said the trial court was correct in awarding life sentence to the father-son duo for their inhuman conduct.

Burqa incident sparks call for Islamic education

New Zealand, July 06: More education on Islamic culture is being recommended in New Zealand, following the case of a woman who was denied entry to a bus because she was wearing a burqa.

Afifia Chida from the Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand told TV ONE’s Breakfast the incident could act as a spark for more integration.

“I think the silver lining in the cloud is that we can now bring it out into the open and educate the public,” she said.

“It could be a lack of education about the burqa, or the veil may have led to their reaction.”

Homosexuality not a disease: UNAIDS

New Delhi, July 06: Homosexuality is not a disease but a personal sexual orientation, UNAIDS said today, disagreeing with Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s remarks on the subject.

“Consistent with WHO’s disease classification, UNAIDS does not regard homosexuality as a disease. There is no place for stigma and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation,” UNAIDS executive director Michel Sidibe said in a statement here.

Pak has reserve terror army for war with India

Islamabad, July 06: Pakistan has kept 12,000-14,000 fully trained Kashmiri militants in reserve and would use them, if needed, in a war with India, according to a former militant commander.

The unidentified commander, who enjoyed military patronage, said Pakistan’s military is still training militants to carry out proxy wars in Kashmir and Afghanistan, the New York Times reported.

France to invite Palestine, Israel for peace talks

Paris, July 06: France plans to invite Palestinian and Israeli leaders for peace talks scheduled for September in Paris, a media report said.

France is eager to generate a concrete alternative to stop the long deadly conflict in the Middle East, Xinhua reported citing Europe 1 radio.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said he hoped Palestine and Israel could return to the dialogue with more effort from the Middle East Quartet – the European Union, UN, US and Russia.

Man who raped teenager while asleep walks free

London, July 6: A man in Britain, who raped a teenaged girl, walked free from a court Monday after convincing the jury that he was actually suffering from ’sexsomnia’, a sleeping disorder.

Stephen Lee Davies, 43, told the jury he could not remember having intercourse with the teenage college student despite speaking to her at the time, and then leaving his bedroom to make a hot drink afterwards.

The court heard that he even sent a text message to the girl the following day to inquire whether they had been intimate, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Mumbai, July 06: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Amitabh Bachchan and Sony Television in response to a PIL which says the promos of Kaun Banega Crorepati insulted Subhash Chandra Bose’s slogan “Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azadi doonga”.

Of the six scenes from the game show promo, five are derogatory to Netaji’s slogan, the PIL said, adding some scenes show that people were unaware about the slogan and Netaji’s role in freedom struggle.

The Secret Service arrested Darryl James Swanson, of Portland, on Friday (Saturday, NZ time). Prosecutors say Swanson made threats in numerous phone calls to federal prosecutors’ offices in Oregon and Washington, a county government office in Florida, and The Associated Press.

LECs to tenant farmers from July 10

Hyderabad, July 06: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is expected to release the Loan Eligibility Cards to the tenant farmers on July 10 following a formal inaugural function to be held on that day.

So far six lakh applications have been received from all districts. West Godavari district tops in the number of applications received from tenant farmers.
