Hope, anguish, sorrow mark resignation drama

New Delhi, July 6: In a pre-scripted drama, 10 Congress MPs on Monday resigned to their posts to exert pressure on the UPA government to take an early decision on Telangana State.
The resignation episode had all elements of a drama – placating the needy, pleading with the powerful, anguish, sorrow, sympathy and last but not last, hope.
Though the seven MPs had an appointment with Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar at 11 a.m. to submit their resignations, all of them arrived almost half-an-hour late.

OU campus on the boil again

Hyderabad, July 6: Days after the academic year commenced, Osmania University students picked up stones instead of books as the campus was yet again on the boil on Tuesday with Telangana movement gaining momentum. On the first day of the two-day bandh, students and police personnel fought pitched battles on the campus with the former raining stones leading to the latter to lob tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Andhra fiscal condition likely to get worse

Hyderabad, July 6: The fiscal condition of the state government remains very precarious. It is likely to get worse as the officials were finding it difficult to augment revenue receipts and allocate funds to different departments with no clear instructions from their political bosses who are preoccupied with the political activity in the state.
The revenue collections for the first quarter (April-June) of the financial year fell by 15 per cent, about Rs 2,200 crore lesser than the target of Rs 14,110 crore revenue collections.

Bandh cripples life in ten Telangana districts

Hyderabad, July 6: Life came to a standstill in all the 10 districts of Telangana region with autos, bus and train services staying off the roads while educational institutions and business establishments remaining shut due to the 48-hour bandh called by the TJAC in support of their demand for a Telangana state. The bandh was by and large peaceful except for stray incidents at Osmania University.

No plan to impose President’s Rule in AP

New Delhi, July 06: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday said that there was no move to impose President”s Rule in Andhra Pradesh.

He also said that the Congress is upset about the bulk resignations and hopes to “engage with” its politicians from Telangana region through more discussions in Delhi.

He said that he hoped that the campaign for Telangana would not lead to breakdown of law and order.

Earlier, Chidambaram had said the government is yet to take a final decision on the separate statehood issue.

Telangana activists attack legislator’s convoy

Hyderabad, July 6: MLA Marri Shashidhar Reddy, one among the several Telangana public representatives who have not resigned from their MLA seats, had a bitter experience on Tuesday, when several pro-Telangana activists threw eggs, chappals at his convoy at Balkampet.
Reddy came to Balkampet to attend a religious programme at Yellama temple. Balkampet Telangana protagonists gheraoed and stopped the convoy of Reddy. The agitators demanded Reddy to put in his resignation in support of the separate statehood to Telangana. Some of the protestors threw chappals and eggs at his convoy.

More Telangana lawmakers quit, strike total

Hyderabad, July 6: The political crisis in Andhra Pradesh deepened on Tuesday as four more parliamentarians and 18 legislators from Telangana resigned and a 48-hour shutdown paralysed the region.
A rattled Congress leadership began talks with its state leaders and also indicated it was ready to start a dialogue with others to end the impasse.

Samaikyandhra leaders to meet President today

Tirupati, July 6: Miffed with the union government’s reported move to remove 14(f) rule of the Presidential Order, leaders of the Samaikyandhra Parirakshana Samithi (SAPS) decided to meet President Pratibha Patil during her visit to the temple town on July 6 and voice their opinion against the government decision.

New land policy soon, says revenue minister

Vijaywada, July 6: Revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy has said the state government will come up with a new land policy soon for allocation of land to Special Economic Zones, industries and educational institutions in a more transparent manner.
Speaking at a review meeting here on Tuesday, he said the new land policy of the state would be discussed in the ensuing monsoon session of the Assembly.
He said protection of government lands from encroachment was the responsibility of the revenue employees.

JAC plans stir from Wednesday

Telangana leader arrested in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, July 6: Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) convenor M. Kodandaram was arrested Wednesday when he was heading towards Osmania University here to participate in a rally to demand a separate state of Telangana, police said.
Kodandaram was taken into custody at the RTC cross roads for violating prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure banning the assembly of five or more people in force in the city, police said.

Withdraw excess forces from OU: SHRC to DGP

Hyderabad, July 6: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the director-general of police V Dinesh Reddy to immediately withdraw excess police forces deployed in and around Osmania University on Tuesday.
The SHRC passed this order following a petition filed by Telangana Advocates Joint Action Committee (TAJAC) informing that several students were injured after police allegedly beat them up besides using teargas shells on the campus. They also complained about the the excess police forces deployed on the campus.

TRS takes quitters’ list to 100

Hyderabad, July 6: The crisis triggered by the mass resignations of Telangana MLAs and MPs further intensified on Tuesday with more number of leaders putting in their papers and protests erupting in different places including at the Osamania and Kakatiya universities.

Concern over rise in drug abuse

Vijaywada, July 6: Drug abuse is on the rise among the younger generation in the country due to modern lifestyle and change in food habits, Davidson, zonal director of Narcotics Control Bureau, Chennai, has said.
Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of a workshop on drug abuse organised by the city police, in coordination with Vasavya Mahila Mandali here on Tuesday, he said the increase in the menace resulted in rise in the crime rate in society. The increase in the rate of road mishaps involving youth was also attributed to the drug abuse.

ATM Card thief caught on camera

Hyderabad, July 6 (Siasat News): A ‘charity’ thief who misused the ATM card of an assistant sub-inspector of police was caught on video camera making purchases with it at a petrol pump.

The man had used Rs. 57,611 from the card of the ASI Mr. J Kalki Murthy, who is posted in the DGP’s office, to purchase fuel, medicines, rice and other provisions. He told the shop owners that he is making the purchases for an orphanage that he is ostensibly running.

Not a cloud in sight this Kharif in Anantapur

Anantpur, July 6: Farmers in the district are worried about the Kharif crop this year, as there has been no rains till now despite the season nearing its end.
As Anantapur did not receive rains in June this year, the sowing of groundnut (which is the main crop), was taken up only in 80000 hectares as against 1.76 lakh hectares last year. Last year, it rained in the last week of June and in July which saw an increase in the area of cultivation.
The normal crop area is 8.5 lakh hectares.

Bio-products manufacturers told to submit sample

Hyderabad, July 6: Justice Noushad Ali of the AP High Court declared that expenditure for chemical analysis of bio-products should be borne by their manufacturers itself. He observed that the state government cannot be burdened with the expenditure.
The judge made this observation in a batch of writ petitions filed by M/s. Enrich Bio-Tech and others. The petitioners had moved the High court seeking a direction to the authorities not to interfere with the manufacture, sale and distribution of petitioner’s bio-products, which contain amino acid and sea-weed extract.

17 Indians on death row in UAE

Dubai, July 06: The 17 Indians on death row for allegedly killing a rival bootlegger in Al Sajaa labour camp in 2009 see no reprieve as the family of the Pakistani victim said they will not waive their right to justice unless they receive Dh5 million in blood money, reported ‘7Days’.

Mohammed Ramzan, who represents the family, said, “they reluctantly accepted my offer and went for negotiations.”
