Osmania Police Station’s security beefed up

Hyderabad, June 29: As their plans of shifting out did not materialise, the authorities have now decided to turn the Osmania University campus police station into a fortress with a compound wall with fencing and a watch tower similar to the police stations in Naxal-affected areas.

Five Saudi Women detained for driving

Riyadh, June 29: A Saudi activist says at least five women have been taken into custody accused of defying the men-only driving rule in the ultraconservative Arab kingdom.

The detentions mark the first major backlash by Saudi authorities since a campaign was launched nearly two weeks ago to challenge the driving restrictions.

Dozens of women have since driven through the capital Riyadh and other cities.

Hyderabad will host the first ODI of India Vs England

New Delhi, June 29: Hyderabad will host the first ODI of the five-match series between India and England at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Uppal on October 14. All the five ODIs will be day-night affairs.

The second and third ODI of the series will be played in New Delhi and Mohali on October 17 and 20 respectively.

The fourth ODI will be held at the renovated Wankhede Stadium while Eden Gardens which was denied hosting rights for the England one dayer during World Cup will get a chance to compensate on October 26. The Eden will also host the lone Twenty20 International on October 29.

‘Depressed’ mother murders infant, held

Chennai, June 29: A woman was arrested for allegedly murdering her six day old baby boy, at Tambaram on Tuesday. Sources said, D Revathi, of Bhajanai Koil Street in Red Hills, gave birth to a baby boy six days ago. Her husband was a daily wage labourer. Revathi was said to be suffering from depression for the past few months. On Monday, she was asleep in the house with the baby, her motherinlaw Rani and other relatives. Around 11 pm, Rani woke up and found the infant missing. The infant’s body was then founf inside a plastic water container.

Inflow to Kabini increases due to rain

Mysore, June 29: The inflow in the brimming Kabini reservoir in H D Kote taluk has gone up substantially following heavy rains in its catchment areas, in Wayanad in Kerala and Kakanakote forest area in Karnataka. Due to this, around 10,000 cusecs of water was discharged on Tuesday from the reservoir and the dam, receiving 10,150 cusecs inflow from Kerala and Karnataka.
The level stood at 2,281.50 feet as against a maximum of 2,284 feet.

‘Complete ban only way to end kite menace’

Chennai, June 29: A total ban on the sale of kites, manja thread and kite flying alone would be the solution to wipe out the ‘kite menace’, City Police Commissioner J K Tripathy said in his counter affidavit filed in the Madras High Court on Tuesday.
Responding to a public interest writ petition seeking to regulate kite flying by identifying open spaces and playgrounds in the city, the CoP said that the suggestions given by the petitioner could not be enforced even on an experimental basis. Only a total ban would be the permanent remedy to put an end to this menace, he said.

Saidapet murder suspect found dead in Mumbai

Chennai, June 29: The body of Suresh, the prime suspect in the murder of a 25 year old woman in Saidapet, was found on a railway track in Mumbai.
When Sivanandan, a contractor and resident of Dharmaraja Koil Street, arrived home on the evening of June 24, he found his wife, S Ashwini murdered.
The former small time actress, a native of Mumbai, was found lying on the bed with her throat slashed. The couple also had a fouryearold son.
The police suspected that the woman was raped and murdered.

Mayor does a u-turn on blanket plastic ban

Hyderabad, June 29: Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu on Tuesday did a Uturn on the proposed blanket ban on the usage of plastic carry bags under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits from July 1.
However, till the receipt of government orders, the ban will be imposed on manufacture, sale, usage of plastic carry bags up to 40 microns thickness.
The final notification issued by the government of India in Plastics (Manufacture, usage and waste management) Rules 2009 will be implemented in GHMC limits.

Cattle vaccination costs to be borne by state

Bangalore, June 29: The veterinary department have set a target to vaccinate over 160 lakh sheep and goats against the dreaded disease of PDR and another 150 lakh cattle to prevent foot and month disease before August this year, Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik Belamagi informed here on Tuesday.
The minister said that state would take up the entire cost of vaccination which is supported by the Centre.
While about 70 lakh sheep and goats were administered vaccines against PDR disease, the mass vaccination programme for cattle would begin from August this year, he added.

Corruption charges against ex-CJI’s kin dropped

Thiruvanthapuram, June 29: The Kerala Vigilance Department has provided some relief to former Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan’s son-in-law PV Sreenijin, who was facing charges of disproportionate assets.
Five months after an enquiry was ordered, the Kerala Vigilance Department has written to the government recommending closure of corruption case against former CJI, KG Balakrishnan’s son-in-law.
The Vigilance Department, probing the corruption allegations against PV Sreenijin, has said no complaint received links him to any public servant.

Employee arrested for theft of Rs 18 lakh cash

Hyderabad, June 29: An employee of a private cash management services firm was arrested on Tuesday by police for misappropriating Rs 18 lakh that belongs to the firm.
Police seized a flat and more than 23 tola gold ornaments purchased by the accused with the stolen amount.
The misappropriation of funds took place in the Securitrans India Private Limited’s branch at Sikh Village.
The cash management services firm also maintains ATMs and cash pick-up and delivery services for several banks in the city.
