TDP leader among 7 dead in two accidents in AP

Hyderabad, June 02: Seven persons, including a Telugu Desam party (TDP) leader from Kadapa district, were killed and five others injured in two separate accidents in different parts of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, police said.

The TDP leader Venkata Swamy Reddy, along with four others, was travelling in an Innova car from Kadapa to Hyderabad when it collided with a truck on NH-18 between Nandyal-Panyam in Kurnool district at around 1.30 am on Wednesday.

Reddy and three others died on the spot, they said.

Balwa wants to depose before JPC

New Delhi, June 02: In a new twist to the 2G spectrum allocation controversy, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa – a co-accused in the case- has expressed his desire to depose before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probing the matter, reports claimed Wednesday.

Shahid Usman Balwa is said to have written a letter to the JPC seeking permission to depose before the panel and testify in connection with the high profile case.

Prison officer in sex with killer

London, June 02: A British female prison officer has been suspended over allegations that she had an affair with a murderer at the prison where she works.

The officer faces accusations of having slept with Leigh Thornhill, who is jailed at Wakefield Prison for killing a mother-of-two and violently attacking another woman on a single night.

The 27-year-old ex-soldier was found guilty of killing 38-year-old Corinne Bailey with a piece of wood on August 16, 2003. Bailey’s body was discovered near Thornhill’s home with 68 separate injuries to her head, torso and limbs.

Gaddafi could be sponsoring anti-India terror group: Wikileaks

New Delhi, June 02: A newly-released WikiLeaks cable has revealed that Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi could be financing a Pakistan-based anti-India terror group, Sipah-e-Sahaba, which has made common cause with Maulana Masood Azhar’s Jaish-e-Mohammed. The cable, which is based on information received from a Deobandi scholar and a “long-standing” contact of the US consulate in Lahore, said Sipah leader Mulana Ludhianvi travelled to Libya on a fundraising trip sponsored by the Libyan government.

Yemen hit by street clashes, ’39 killed’ in capital

Sanaa: Gunbattles raged Wednesday on the streets of Yemen’s capital, killing 39 people, witnesses said as a truce between security forces and tribesmen collapsed, residents fled and embassies bolted their doors.

A medic at Jumhuriya hospital said 37 people, most of them combatants, were killed in overnight clashes in Sanaa, while a photographer said the bodies of two other tribesmen were taken to Al-Ulum hospital during the day.

PM directs upgradation at nuke plants

New Delhi, June 02: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday reviewed India’s disaster preparedness and directed government agencies to upgrade safety measures at all nuclear installations in the backdrop of Japan’s nuclear plant leak following a tsunami and earthquake in March.

Manmohan Singh, who met government officials, nuclear scientists and disaster management authorities at his residence here, also took stock of earthquake and tsunami preparedness issues.

3rd NAR convention in city from July 23

8 Telangana MPs to intensify the agitation

Hyderabad, June 02: Eight Telangana MPs on Wednesday decided to intensify the agitation for the separate Telangana state from July beginning with a hunger strike from the first week of the month and to be followed by their resignations from Parliament.

The MPs led by Rajya Sabha member and former Congress Working Committee member K Keshava Rao decided to have an extended meeting with the region’s MLAs and ministers on June 5 to finalise an action plan for the next phase of the agitation.

Ramdev refuses to call off fast against corruption

New Delhi, June 02: Yoga guru Ramdev Wednesday vowed to go ahead with his planned hunger strike to demand urgent steps to curb corruption and bring back black money stashed abroad, ignoring desperate appeals from the government to abandon his plan.

Civil society activists headed by Gandhian Anna Hazare meanwhile voiced his support to Ramdev. And his colleague Shanti Bhushan invited the government to a debate June 5 to discuss the six issues related to the proposed Lokpal bill that have led to differences between the government and the civil society.

No decision yet on joining lawsuit in US on 26/11 attack: PC

New Delhi, June 02: Government today said no decision has been taken on its joining a lawsuit in New York filed by victims of 26/11 terror attack suing Pakistan’s spy agency ISI and LeT founder Hafiz Saeed for their involvement in the incident.

“No decision has been taken. I think there are advantages and disadvantages…No decision has been taken on that,” Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters while noting that recently the Home Secretary G K Pillai had indicated that a decision to join a lawsuit would be a “political call”.

Mubarak, sons to stand trial

Cairo, June 02: Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been scheduled for trial on August 3, on charges of being responsible for the death of protesters and fraud.

According to a Wednesday statement, Mubarak along with his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, and businessman Hussein Salem are set to go on trial.

Mubarak is charged with the intentional killing of protesters during the 18-day long revolution beginning in January, the illegal acquisition of wealth, selling the Egyptian natural gas to Israel at extremely low prices, and squandering state funds, a Media correspondent reported.

Libyan oil minister joins revolution

Tripoli, June 02: It has been confirmed that Libyan Oil Minister Shukri Ghanem has defected to the opposition, joining a slew of other high-ranking officials who have jumped ship.

“I can’t work in this situation. So I have left my country and my job to join the choice made by young Libyans to fight for a democratic country,” Shukri Ghanem was quoted as saying by AFP on Wednesday after he fled to Italy.

He added that he lost hope in the possibility of reform in Libya when he saw the country’s people being killed.

Krishnaiah demands 25 pc quota in corporate colleges

Hyderabad, June 02: AP State Backward Classes Welfare Association president R Krishnaiah on Wednesday came down heavily on the N Kiran Kumar Reddy government over the plight of the weaker sections students.

Stating that they were not in a position to pursue higher studies due to the exorbitant fees being charged by the corporate colleges, particularly the Sri Chaitanya and Narayana Colleges, Mr Krishanaiah said that these institutions were fleecing even the students coming from the middle classes.

Hyderabad, June 02: Former chief minister K Rosaiah on Wednesday stated that he did not recommend any particular person to success incumbent Pradesh Congress Committee president D Srinivas during his meeting with All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.

Talking to media persons at Congress Legislature Party Office, Mr Rosaiah said that he had however appealed to her to appoint an able and efficient candidate for the PCC chief’s post.
