Rs 90 lakh for improving water supply

Hyderabad, June 02: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) will take up works worth Rs 90 lakh, to improve water supply in Vanasthalipuram NGO Colony, Gaddianaram and nearby areas. Most of these areas are getting drinking water once in every three days or twice a week, causing hardships to residents.

M Jagadeeshwar, HMWS&SB managing director, LB Nagar MLA D Sudheer Reddy, director (Technical) S Prabhakar Sharma and other Water Board officials inspected areas under O&M division X on Wednesday.

Guv. inaugurates LV Prasad eye hospital silver jubilee function

Hyderabad, June 2: State Governor E S L Narsimhan and his wife Mrs. Vimala Narsimhan on Thursday visited L V Prasad eye hospital, Banjara Hills.

On the occasion governor lit a lamp to mark the beginning of Silver jubilee function of the hospital and expressed good wishes for the future.

Harassed for adopting a Muslim girl

Hyderabad, June 02: Papalal is a painter from Hyderabad and four almost four years, his family has been facing harassment.

Reason? Papalal found a little girl at the blast site near Gokul chat centre in Hyderabad in August 2007 and brought her home.

As no one came to claim the child, Papalal and his wife have been taking care of her as their own eldest daughter, even after they realised that she was probably born to Muslim parents.

Mamata takes step to put PDS ‘in order’

Mumbai, June 02: In a defence of his estranged uncle and Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Wednesday said that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s outburst against the Shiv Sena leader was nothing but an attempt “to divert the attention of people from the scams he and his family members are involved in”.

A day after Pawar created a stir by questioning the senior Thackeray’s contribution to society, the MNS chief said that the criticism of his uncle was “totally unwarranted”.

Gulzar Houz-Charminar stretch made one-way

Hyderabad, June 02: The traffic coming from Gulzar Houz towards Charminar will henceforth be stopped as commissioning of the Charminar Pedestrianisation project has began. Traffic police said this will be among the first efforts to offload traffic around Charminar and make the stretch free from vehicular movement.

On Wednesday, barricades were arranged after the Gulzar Houz Junction and police diverted the traffic coming from Madina towards Gulzar Houz. In the coming months, motorists coming from Charminar towards Gulzar Houz, will also be barred from using the stretch.

Teacher arrested in Bihar for helping Maoists

Patna, June 02: A government school teacher has been arrested for helping Maoists who blew up his school in Bihar’s Rohtas district, police said Thursday.

Maoists Tuesday used dynamite to blow up the government middle school building at Parchha village in Rohtas, about 150 km from here, police said.

Police suspected that Ajit Mishra, who was posted at that school, was involved in supplying explosives, remote control devices, fuse wires and other equipment to the Maoists that was used in several explosions in Rohtas and neighbouring districts.

Mumbai, June 02: Bollywood actress Preity Zinta seems to have got quite bored with her constant link-up to Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, who now plays for her Indian Premier League team Kings XI Punjab.

Mumbai, June 02: The search for an item girl continues for filmmaker Aamir Khan. Actress Malaika Arora-Khan, who was last tipped to do the item number in the forthcoming film that stars actor Imran Khan in the lead, now confirms that she is not doing the item song.

According to sources, the filmmakers were sure of getting Katrina Kaif to do an item number for the film but she backed out citing date issues. “Everybody wanted Katrina Kaif to do the number but she couldn’t it as she’s busy shooting,” says a source.

PC hints at ‘middle path’ on Telangana tangle

Hyderabad, June 02: It is official.Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday said he would come up with a solution to the Telangana tangle that would be acceptable to all regions, indicating that division of the State might not happen, after all.

This will be more or less the “middle path” that the Congress is planning to adopt in regard to the state bifurcation issue as disclosed by The New Indian Express recently. The middle course would be finalised at the party’s Chintan Shibir scheduled to be held at Mt Abu in the first or second week of this month.

Capture Mullah Omar, Kashmiri by July: US to Pak

Islamabad, June 02: The US has given Pakistan a deadline till July to launch a military offensive in the restive North Waziristan tribal region for capturing five most wanted al-Qaida and Taliban terrorists, including Ayman al-Zawahiri, Mullah Omar and Ilyas Kashmiri.

Pakistani security forces have been asked to capture al-Zawahiri, Omar, Kashmiri, Sirajuddin Haqqani and Atia Abdur Rehman either in a unilateral or joint military action within the deadline till July — the month when NATO and allied forces will begin withdrawing from neighbouring Afghanistan.

India to launch 12 foreign satellites in next two years

Bangalore, June 02: India has bagged multi-million dollar contracts to launch 12 foreign satellites in the lower orbit from its spaceport over the next two years, a top space agency official said Wednesday.

“Through our commercial arm Antrix Corporation, we have received orders from Canada, Indonesia, Germany and other European countries to launch a dozen satellites in the sun-synchronous orbit during the next two years,” state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K. Radhakrishnan told reporters here.

Huge blast hits Libya’s Benghazi

Benghazi, June 02: A car bomb has reportedly gone off outside a hotel in Libya’s opposition-controlled eastern city of Benghazi.

The bomb went off in a parking lot in front of Tibesti hotel where foreign delegations are based and opposition authorities often meet, a Media correspondent reported late Wednesday.

According to the report, five cars were set ablaze after the blast. No casualties have been reported.

UAE bans cucumber imports from European countries

Abu Dhabi, June 02: The UAE Wednesday imposed a temporary ban on import of cucumbers from a number of European countries including Spain, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.

A resolution issued by Minister of Environment and Water Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad stipulated that other produce of vegetables imported from these countries would be allowed into the countries provided that importers present a health certificate stating they are free from E.coli bacteria.

Hurriyat revokes suspension of Ittehadul Muslimeen

Srinagar, June 02: The nearly two-month-long suspension of the Moulvi Abbas Ansari-led Ittehadul Muslimeen from the moderate Hurriyat Conference in Kashmir was Wednesday revoked by the conglomerate, a press statement issued here said.

The statement said a meeting of the executive committee of the moderate Hurriyat Conference chaired by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq decided to revoke the suspension decision of its senior executive member and prominent Shia leader Ansari.

Four reported dead after tornadoes in U.S.

Washington, Jnue 02: At least two tornadoes swept through western and central Massachusetts on Wednesday, sending debris slamming into buildings and killing four people, Massachusetts’ governor said.

Gov. Deval Patrick said two people died in Westfield, one in West Springfield, and one in Brimfield in the central part of the State. He had no details about those killed.

The storms did extensive damage in Springfield, the State’s third largest city.

State police report 33 injuries in Springfield. Police said five of the injuries were reported serious and required surgery.

Jennifer Lopez to host Latin American talent search

Los Angeles, June 02: Pop star Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony will undertake a tour of Latin American countries in search of undiscovered musical talent.

The couple would hold auditions for the television series “¡Q’Viva! The Chosen” to be aired next month.

“Very soon, the world’s heart will beat to the tune of Latin rhythms and we’re looking forward to experiencing history in the making,” the couple said in a statement.

The show’s producer – XIX Entertainment – also produces “American Idol”.

Fire at petrol pump at Ramanthapur

Hyderabad, june 02: Fire broke out at Uppal Auto Services petrol pump of Indian Oil Corporation at Ramanthapur on Tuesday evening.

The machine was completely damaged in the fire mishap. Two staff members of the petrol pump, Narasimha Reddy and Ramesh, suffered minor injuries in the incident. Customers and staff members of the petrol pump ran to safety after noticing the fire. Some staff members tried to put out the flames using foam extinguishers.

The staff of nearby petrol pump, which is just 300 metres away from the mishap site, rushed to the spot and assisted them in firefighting.

New Delhi, June 02: Mumbai attack accused David Headley testified on Wednesday that he had conducted a surveillance of the German Bakery in Pune, which was bombed in 2010.

He also testified that he identified Chabad houses or Jeiwsh establishments in Delhi, Pushkar and Pune as potential bombing targets.

Meanwhile, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who is accused of providing a cover for his good friend David Coleman Headley, is not likely to testify in his trial.

Tripoli pummeled by more airstrikes

Tripoli, June 02: Over a dozen massive explosions have rocked central Tripoli as intensified NATO airstrikes over the city continue.

Six blasts were heard at 12:35 a.m. Thursday morning (2235 GMT Wednesday) which were followed by several more explosions minutes later, AFP reported.

NATO fighter jets carried out attacks late Monday and Tuesday on Tripoli, the suburb of Tajura, and Al-Jafra, 600 kilometers (370 miles) to the south.

Nasrallah hails Iran’s governing system

Gaza, June 02: Lebanese Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah has hailed Iran’s system of governance and warned against propaganda campaigns targeting it.

He made the remarks in Beirut on Wednesday during a ceremony organized by the Iranian Embassy in Lebanon to commemorate the passing of Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.

“Everyone in the Islamic Republic is accountable before the Judiciary,” Nasrallah said, adding, “The West is trying to portray Iran as an oppressive regime.”
