Yemeni forces attack protesters, kill 20

Sanaa, May 30: At least 20 individuals have been killed in southern Yemen as security forces clashed with protesters that were calling for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Local medics reported on Monday that Yemeni forces killed at least seven demonstrators in Taizz, according to wire reports.

The reports also indicate that government forces set protest camps on fire as well, injuring scores of protesters in the process.

IT professional commits suicide in Delhi

New Delhi, May 30: A 28-year-old IT professional allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his southeast Delhi residence.

Subodh Kukreja, who was living as a paying guest at a house of a businessman at C- block in East of Kailash area, took the extreme step last night; police said adding he did not leave any suicide note.

The deceased hailed from Ranchi in Jharkhand and was working as a marketing researcher in Infosys Technologies Ltd in South Delhi’s Green Park.

Now Salary Hike in Saudi

Jeddah, May 30: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah on Sunday issued a decree approving 18 new salary scales for government employees. The new scales that came into effect Saturday, include a 15-percent inflationary allowance.

The royal gesture, which includes adoption of SR3,000 as minimum salary for Saudi employees in the public sector, comes on the sixth anniversary of the king’s accession to the throne.

Defected Yemeni minister slams Saleh

Sanaa, May 30: Yemen’s defected defense minister has accused President Ali Abdullah Saleh of ‘deliberately’ handing over the southern town of Zinjibar to armed groups.

In a televised statement, former Yemeni Defense Minister Abdullah Ali Aliwah said, “We denounce Ali Abdullah Saleh’s plan to deliberately allow the town to fall,” a Media correspondent reported late on Sunday.

Aliwah made the remarks as hundreds of suspected militants stormed the small coastal town on Friday, capturing a number of army tanks and several armored cars.

Kazakh woman stabbed boyfriend in Dubai

Dubai, May 30: A Kazakh businesswoman who fatally knifed her boyfriend claims to have been pardoned by his family.

The 26-year-old woman said at the Dubai Court of First Instance that it was an act of self-defence, reported ‘Gulf News’.

Meanwhile, prosecutors charged AF, with intentionally murdering her Ukrainian boyfriend, YC, by stabbing him with a kitchen knife at her villa in Umm Suqeim when she had a heated argument with the latter.

She stabbed him once in the heart and confessed to committing the crime to the presiding judge. She added that she cannot hire a lawyer.

Denied’ vaccine, boy dies of rabies

Khammam, May 30: A 16-year-old boy, who was bitten by a stray dog and allegedly denied anti rabies vaccine at the district headquarters hospital over three weeks ago, succumbed to rabies at a private hospital here on Sunday.

Yemeni forces fire at protesters in Taiz, 6 killed

Saana, May 30: Yemeni forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh opened fire on protesters in the southern city of Taiz on Sunday, killing at least six people and wounding 120, hospital sources said.

A Reuters photographer at the scene said police fired live ammunition, tear gas and used water cannons to disperse demonstrators protesting outside a municipal building to demand the release of a fellow protester who was arrested on Saturday.

Muslims advised not to drink halal beer

Kuala Lampur, May 30: Muslims in Malaysia should avoid consuming a brand of beer claimed to be halal as it contains more alcohol than is permitted, a minister in the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Mr Jamil Khir Baharom said that despite claims by the distributor that the beer only had 0.01 per cent alcohol content, laboratory tests showed that it contained as much as 0.5 per cent alcohol.

“We will refer (the matter) to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department to get a better picture,” Mr Jamil Khir told reporters yesterday.

Indian Muslim heritage centre opens

Singapore, May 30: The story of one community in Singapore has officially become part of the cultural heritage landscape here, with the opening of the Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre yesterday.

President S R Nathan opened the centre in Telok Ayer Street, which features four interactive galleries, that highlight the contributions of Indian Muslims to society here.

Dubai, May 30: Daad Mohammed Al Balushi, UAE’s super dad who has 90 children from 17 wives is all set to marry yet again in two weeks.

The 63-year-old big daddy says “100 children are within reach”, reported. Two of his wives are expecting kids in June. “Next month, by the grace of God, I will be the father of 92 children,” he said. He already has 50 grandchildren.

Jail inmates beat doctor to death in Bihar

Patna, May 30: A doctor died in Patna hours after he was beaten up by some inmates of a district jail in Gopalganj district of Bihar, police said.

Physician Bhudev Singh died in the Patna Medical College and Hospital where he was referred to from Gopalganj where he was badly beaten up by the district jail inmates, police said.

An FIR was registered against seven inmates for carrying out murderous attack on Singh. It is not yet clear why the doctor was assaulted.

Bihar Home Secretary has ordered an enquiry into the incident. Role of jail authorities also being investigated.

‘West-Iran talks entail policy change’

Tehran, May 30: Senior members of the Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) have demanded a major policy change towards Tehran by the US and other Western powers as a precondition for any talks with Iran.

“Iran will only hold talks with the US provided that Washington respects Iran’s rights and stops its [deliberate] efforts to impede the Islamic Republic’s nuclear,” said Mohammad Karami-Rad, member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy.

Hyderabad, May 30: “If you are capable of taking a decision, take it. If not, admit it,” Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu told the Congress high command on the contentious Telangana statehood demand.

“The Congress is in power. If it is capable of clearing the uncertainty in the state, let it do it but why criticise the TDP?” Naidu said while speaking on the last day of the party’s Mahanadu here on Sunday.
