Hyderabad, May 30: “If you are capable of taking a decision, take it. If not, admit it,” Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu told the Congress high command on the contentious Telangana statehood demand.

“The Congress is in power. If it is capable of clearing the uncertainty in the state, let it do it but why criticise the TDP?” Naidu said while speaking on the last day of the party’s Mahanadu here on Sunday.

City boy bags rank 2 in law entrance

Hyderabad, May 30: Vasanth Bharani of Hyderabad bagged the All India Rank 2 and Andhra Pradesh General Rank 1 in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for which 24,500 candidates appeared.

He scored 170 out of 200 marks in the test. Candidates were tested on Maths, English, current affairs, logical reasoning and legal reasoning.

CLAT is the admission test held for 11 National Law Universities including NLSIU (Bengaluru), NALSAR (Hyderabad) and WBNUJS (West Bengal) among other premier law schools.

Crowd control measures on, but no security

Vishakapatnam, May 30: A huge number of VVIPs frequently visit the Sri Varahalakshmi Nrusimhaswami Temple of Simhachalam but this historic temple does not receive proper security either from the police or the endowments department. Though the temple is one of the most important Hindu temples in the country, only four special protection force personnel guard it.

Job quota triples number of DIETCET candidates

Hyderabad, May 30: The District Institute of Education and Training Common Entrance Test (DIETCET) 2011 went off peacefully on Sunday.

As many as 3.19 lakh candidates registered for the exam and about 2.92 lakh took the exam.

The test was conducted by the Department of School Education for a two year Diploma in Education (D.Ed.) for Government District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) and for private elementary teacher training institutions in the state.

Vivekananda express chugs into Secunderabad

Hyderabad, May 30: Vivekananda Express, an exhibition train showcasing the life, works and teachings of Swami Vivekananda was opened by Swami Anupananda, director of Ramakrishna Mission for public viewing on Saturday on platform no. 10 of the Secunderabad station.

The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m to 8 p.m till May 30. The opening day saw a large footfall of visitors. Vivekananda Express was flagged off by Mamata Banerji, the then minister of Railways on January 12 from Howrah station on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

Six drown in two lakes on outskirts

Hyderabad, May 30: Six persons, including four women, drowned while two others were rescued in separate incidents on the outskirts of the city today.

In Pahadisharief, six persons went to Ibrahim Sagar lake at Jalpally for a picnic today. According to police, a family from Moin Nagar, Mohd Fahim (45), Shabana Begum (35) and their son, Arbaz (11), came to their relative, Uzma Begum’s house at Ghouse Nagar in Bandlaguda two days back.

This morning, Fahim’s family, along with Uzma (20), her sister, Hazera (17) and their relative, Shabana (14), went to Ibrahim Sagar.

TJAC takes battle to Delhi, holds round table

Hyderabad, May 30: As part of its plan to build pressure on the central government by organising a series of programmes in the national capital, the Telangana Joint Action Committee conducted a round table conference on Chapter-VIII of Srikrishna Committee report in Delhi on Sunday.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman, representatives of several other political parties and a cross-section of people participated in the meeting.

VHR to tour North Andhra, Kakinada

Hyderabad, May 30: Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao will commiserate with farmers in Srikakulam district who fought against setting up of thermal power stations in their district. Rao will visit the areas where Nagarjuna Construction Company and East Coast Energy had proposed to set up plants.

During his 4-day visit, he will also visit Anantagiri and Araku in Visakhapatnam where tribals have been protesting against bauxite mining, Gangavaram port and NTPC Simhadri power plant, SEZ of Brandix, Kakinada’s SEZ and the port.

Monsoon may hit Andhra Pradesh by May 31

Hyderabad, May 30: The southwest monsoon set over Kerala on Sunday two days in advance and is expected to arrive in Andhra Pradesh by May 31.

The south-west monsoon has also advanced into most parts of the south Arabian Sea and some parts of Tamil Nadu, south Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officially announced the setting of the monsoon in Kerala on Sunday afternoon.

Iran busts drug smuggling racket

Tehran, May 30: Iran’s anti-drug police have busted an international gang involved in smuggling synthetic narcotics and arrested 15 people, Press TV reported Monday.

“More than 270 kg of crystal was confiscated from the gang,” Gen. Hamid-Reza Hosseinabadi, chief of the anti-drug police, was quoted as saying.

The gang produced narcotics in Iran, and then shipped them to Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand in milk consignments, he said.

Hosseinabadi said the drug ring’s network in other countries have also been identified in cooperation with their police counterparts there.

‘Central government minus Congress, BJP our aim’

Hyderabad, May 30: The Telugu Desam will take the initiative to bring a non-Congress and non-BJP government to power at the Centre after the next election.

“The Congress has been weakened in the country and will weaken further. The BJP is, due to its internal squabbles and communal agenda, unable to dethrone the corrupt Congress. The TDP will, therefore, take it as its responsibility to bring an alternative government at the Centre,” party president N Chandrababu Naidu said in his concluding speech on the final day of Mahanadu here on Sunday.

‘Corruption weds inflation’

In a novel dig at the Congress-led central government, state BJP’s ‘Utsav Prakoshth’ (festivities cell) today staged a wedding of ‘corruption’ and ‘inflation’.

The “baratis” were gifted with replicas of movable and immovable property documents, fix deposits receipts from ‘Swiss bank’, and bags of ‘black money’.

Some hundred ‘guests’ were dressed up to look like various leaders, including the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Two Vedic students held for Junior’s abuse

Tirupati, May 30: Two of the three students accused of sexually harassing a fellow student at TTD-run Veda Pathashala at Dharmagiri on Tirumala were arrested and produced in a court here on Sunday.

The special team constituted to probe the case arrested Avinash and Mahesh Kannan, and produced them in the court which remanded them to judicial custody for 15 days.

On May 19 the parents of a 13-year-old student lodged a complaint with the Tirumala police alleging sexual abuse of their son at the hands of three of his seniors.

Dubai to stop cigarette sale on World No Tobacco Day

Dubai, May 30:Dubai has urged traders not to sell cigarettes for at least 24 hours at petrol stations and shops on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day May 31.

A total of 63 shops and 138 petrol stations are taking part in the campaign.

Restaurants and cafes have also been requested to participate.

There will be free medical tests conducted by the Dubai Medical College on the occasion, and lectures and workshops in various institutions on maintaining health and safety of the community.

The Dubai municipality had issued a law in 2007 prohibiting smoking in public places.

Eight dead, eight injured in two road mishaps

Guntur, May 30: Eight persons died and eight others were injured in two mishaps in Guntur and Prakasam districts on Sunday.

Five persons, including an infant, died when a lorry hit their car at Chandolu village.

The mishap occurred while a marriage party of Angalakuduru was returning home from Chandolu. The deceased were identified as Sk Nanesaheb (50), Sk Baji (30), Sk Kalimullah (50), Sk Dariyabi (60) and 7-monthold Sk Abdul Sadik. Three others were injured and they were shifted to Tenali government hospital.

First rabies death in Khammam

Khammam, May 30: The first rabies death was reported in Khammam rural mandal on Sunday.

Seven other children of four villages were also bitten by dogs. Challa Balu (11) of Danavaigudem who was bitten by a dog on May 2, was admitted to a private hospital here on Saturday. He died while undergoing treatment. His parents Narasimha and Savitramma, who are daily wage earners, alleged that they lost their son due to negligence of government hospital doctors.

‘I pity Naidu for his state of mind’

Kalkiri (CHITTOOR), May 30: Chief Minister N Kirankumar Reddy ridiculed Telugu Desam chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s comment that the state government is being remotely operated by the Centre.

Talking to reporters on the second day of his tour of the district, Reddy said, “I only pity Chandrababu Naidu. It explains his state of mind. I will not comment further on it.”

Jupalli to hold luncheon with MPs

Hyderabad, May 30: Endowments minister Jupalli Krishna Rao plans to discuss his padayatra in Mahaboobnagar district with MPs from the region at his residence here on Monday.

Rao, who had a running feud with information minister DK Aruna, deferred his tour on May 23 at the instance of the PCC with Aruna threatening to disrupt his yatra if it entered her Gadwal constituency.

SC dismisses Chiranjeevi’s estranged son-in-law’s bail plea

New Delhi, May 30: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of G R Sirish Bharadwaj, estranged younger son-in-law of Praja Rajyam president and Telgu mega star Chiranjeevi, facing a dowry harassment case.

A vacation bench of justices G S Singhvi and Chandramauli Prasad, rejecting the plea of Sirish’s counsel that bail be granted as the two families were seeking an amicable settlement, asked the accused to surrender before the court concerned in Hyderabad.

Congress Legislature Party hits back at TDP

Hyderabad, May 30: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) members have sharply reacted to Telugu Desam’s challenges to the Congress government and described the Mahanadu as an exercise in futility and predicted that the opposition party would be wiped out from the political scene.

Tribal welfare Minister P Balaraju, MLA G Venkata Ramana Reddy, AICC secretary P Sudhakar Reddy, government chief whip Mallu Batti Vikramarka and MLC G Padma Raju addressed the press at the CLP office here on Sunday.

Only 11 cops guard Bhadrachalam Temple!

Bhadrachalam, May 30: The Ramalayam at Bhadrachalam attracts a large number of devotees from across the country but the lack of security measures is becoming a matter of serious concern for them.

One of the oldest temples in the country, Bhadrachalam Ramalayam was constructed during the 16th century by a devotee named Bhaktharamadas alias Kancherla Gopanna who worked as the tahsildar of Palvoncha paragana. He was inspired by lord Rama and used the government’s tax collection to construct the temple.
