Nagam asks Andhra leaders to bolster his fight

Hyderabad, May 30: The suspended TDP leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy on Friday sent a 28-page letter to all the MLAs, MPs and MLCs who have been demanding for Samaikya Andhra.

In his letter, Nagam explained that injustice has been done to Telangana and asked Andhra leaders to cooperate with him in bifurcating the state. “Let us divide like brothers and compete with each other in terms of development,” he said.

Two held for selling Cocaine

Hyderabad, May 30: The police today nabbed two drug peddlers from plush locality of Banjara Hills on charges of selling Cocaine under NDPS Act and also seized 25 grams of the banned substance from them.

Acting on a tip-off, the Banjara Hills police busted the drug racket and apprehended Sarfaraj and Showkat, both in their 30s, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) Stephen Raveendra told PTI, adding that police seized 25 grams of cocaine from them when they were soliciting customers in Banjara Hills.

Minor earthquake jolts Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, May 30: A low intensity earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was recorded on Monday in Kashmir.

However, there were no reports of any damage.

“Earthquake of 4.4 magnitude occurred today at 9.15 am,” an official of the Disaster Management Cell told PTI.

He said the epicenter of the quake was in Pakistan with coordinates of 32.07 north latitude and 70.11 east longitude.

He said there was no report of any damage due to the quake.

Nato apologises for Afghan strikes

Kabul, May 30: International forces in Afghanistan have apologised for an air strike that killed up to 14 civilians in the south-west of the country on Saturday.

A statement by senior Nato generals said the top priority was to prevent civilian casualties and it took such cases very seriously.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai earlier condemned the strike in Helmand.

He said Kabul had repeatedly asked the US to stop raids that killed civilians and this was his “last warning”.

The White House said it shared Mr Karzai’s concerns and took them “very seriously”.

Fresh blasts hit Yemeni capital

Sanaa, May 30: A series of powerful explosions and gunfire has rattled the capital of Yemen, as a truce between opposition tribesmen and regime forces is on the verge of collapse.

Several explosions were heard on Sunday in the al-Hasaba district in the capital Sana’a where the Hashed tribe has been fighting government forces loyal to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Reuters reported.

Fatah, Hamas set to agree on unity govt.

Gaza, May 30: A top Fatah official says the party is determined to establish a unity government with rival group Hamas despite the criticism by Israelis and the United States.

The senior Fatah official Nabil Shaath made the remark following his meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza against the backdrop of ongoing talks between Fatah and Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) to agree on the make-up of a unity government, AFP reported on Sunday.

Spanish to fine those who go naked in public

Barcelona, May 30: Police in the northeastern Spanish city of Barcelona will fine people who go out in public naked or semi-nude.

The fines range from 120 to 500 euros ($170 to $700) and will be imposed on people who refuse to adhere to the generally acceptable minimum public dressing standards.

Sources told EFE that a modified ordinance entered into force Sunday after a period of 15 days, during which time public announcements have been made and other methods employed to disseminate the news among the population of Barcelona.

CBI to summon high-profile Adarsh accused

Mumbai, May 30: CBI officers have reportedly decided to step up the pace of investigation into the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society irregularities from June and will soon be summoning some high-profile accused and witnesses, including former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, for questioning.

Chavan, who has been named one of the 14 accused in the scam, has been spared any confrontation with the CBI until now. “One by one, all the accused will questioned. The case has made strong progress and hence all the accused will be called in for questioning,” said a senior CBI officer.

Bombs kill 10 after Nigerian President sworn in

Abuja, May 30: Bomb blasts at a beer garden and eatery at a Nigerian military barracks killed at least 10 people hours after President Goodluck Jonathan was inaugurated, an emergency source said.

Three bomb blasts hit a “mammy market” — commonly found at Nigerian military barracks and open to civilians — in the northern city of Bauchi, located in one of the states hard hit by post-poll riots last month.

The attacks at the market were caused by “locally made devices”, Bauchi state police commissioner Abdulkadir Indabawa said.

Fire mishap at timber depot in Bandlaguda

Hyderabad, May 30: In a major fire mishap that lasted for more than 15 hours, timber and plywood worth several lakhs of rupees was reduced to ashes at Bandlaguda on the outskirts of the city today. Nearly 30 fire service personnel with three fire tenders and more than 100 water tankers battled the fire for almost the entire day.

Around 4.30 a.m, fire broke out in the Vanraj Wood Products Depot. As thick smoke and flames emanated from the depot, five families living adjacent to it were evacuated by firefighters.

Did not attend funeral of Headley’s father: Gilani

Islamabad, May 30: Lashkar-e-Tayiba operative David Headley has told a jury in the Tahawwur Rana trial that Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani attended his father’s funeral, but the latter’s office rubbished the claim.

Headley, 50, made the claim during his testimony in the trial of the Mumbai attack co-accused Rana in Chicago.

Headley told jury during the course of questioning on Thursday that Prime Minister Gilani attended the funeral of his father Syed Saleem Gilani and also offered condolences to the bereaved family.

CPI(M) MLA ‘jumps to death’

Kolkata, May 30: A Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA is suspected to have committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of the city’s MLA hostel on Sunday evening.

Mostafa Bin Quasem, who was elected from Basirhat Uttar in North 24 Parganas district, is believed to have jumped from his quarters in room number 411. Police officials said that a suicide note had been found, but its contents were not revealed.

Pak need to stop jihadi groups: PM

New Delhi, May 30: Voicing concern over the terror machine still remaining intact in Pakistan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked the leadership in Islamabad to “now wake up” and stop jehadi groups operating from its soil to target India.

Sending a message to Pakistan in the wake of the Karachi attack, Singh has said its leadership should realise that the terror machine there was “equally hurting” them and must take more effective action against the terror groups.

No differences over Reddy brothers, asserts BJP

New Delhi, May 30: In the wake of the controversy created by Sushma Swaraj’s statement on Reddy brothers, BJP today said there was no rift over the issue in the party.

Asked about the reported differences between Sushma Swaraj and some senior party leaders, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman said “there is no rift in the party. There are no differences within”.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari had issued a statement yesterday, saying any debate on the choice of Karnataka ministers in the media is “totally unnecessary”.

India may approach NY court to prove ISI a terror group

New Delhi, May 30: India may approach a New York court to be a party to a lawsuit, filed by the family of 26/11 victims Rabbi Gavriel Noah Holtzberg and his wife Rivka, to declare Pakistan’s spy agency ISI as a terrorist group.

Armed with many documents, which prove the ISI’s links with terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, India may implead itself in the lawsuit filed in the federal court to help the petitioners as well as declaring ISI as a terrorist outfit.

Salman fight with director?

Mumbai, May 30: It seems Salman Khan wants ‘Ready’ to rock to his own rhythm and has taken charge of the destiny of the film’s release. Director Anees Bazmee has been sportingly justifying all his impositions as friendly collaboration, but apparently a difference of opinion recently came up between the two.

“It was for a chase sequence. Salman wanted it edited in a particular way. But Anees thought it was fine the way it was. The two of them had a heated argument over the issue,” said a source.

Monsoon reaches Kerala 3 days before schedule

New Delhi, May 30: South-west monsoon on Sunday made a grand entry into Kerala, bringing cheer to the farming community dependent on rains for a good crop.

“Southwest monsoon has set in over most parts of South Arabian Sea, Kerala, some parts of Tamil Nadu, South Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea,” the weather office announced here.

The northern limit of monsoon passes through Aminidivi, Kozhikode, Kodaikanal and Nancowrie.

3 dead in road accident

Ranchi, May 30: A man and his two children died in Jharkhand’s Simdega district early Monday after the bike they were travelling on collided with a car, police said.

The accident occurred near Thethaitangar village on National Highway-23 in Simdega, some 110 km from Ranchi.

The man, his wife and their two children were travelling on a bike and crashed into a Bolero car, a police officer said.

The man and the two children died on the spot. The woman has been admitted to a hospital, where her condition is stated to be serious.

Zamzam distribution goes high-tech

Makkah, May 30: The number of holy water distribution outlets at the King Abdullah Zamzam Water Purification Project in Kudai will be increased to 42.

The increase is part of the new development projects and modifications, set to be launched shortly, Al-Madinah daily reported quoting well-informed sources.

At present, there are 20 manual outlets for distribution of the holy water. These will be replaced by automatic ones and increased to 42 as part of measures to ease the heavy rush of Umrah pilgrims and visitors to Islam’s holiest shrine to collect the Zamzam water.

‘Indira responsible for party’s collapse in UP’

New Delhi, May 30: A book, part of a series commissioned by the Congress party on its history, related the decline of the Congress in the Hindi heartland to certain political measures taken by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, including the “excesses during the Emergency”.

The fifth volume of the Centenary Hist ory of the Indian National Congress —covering the period from 1964 to 1984 — has been commissioned by the All India Congress Committee to commemorate the party’s 125 years but written by independent scholars.
