Orissa celebrates India’s win

Bhubaneswar, April 03: Hundreds of cricket lovers in Orissa Saturday night took to the streets, burst firecrackers, waved the national flag and danced to celebrate India’s cricket World Cup win.

Hundreds of youth in state capital Bhubaneswar danced on the streets with faces painted in the colours of the national flag.

“It was a great day. India has won the World Cup again after a wait for 28 years,” Ramani Ranjan, a cricket fan, told IANS.

In the southern town of Berhampur, many cricket lovers visited temples and broke coconuts before the deities.

Mamata wants national holiday to celebrate World Cup win

Kolkata, April 03: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday congratulated the Indian team for their brilliant World Cup win and appealed to the central government to declare Monday a national holiday to celebrate country’s biggest cricketing win.

“Our leader Mamata Banerjee has appealed to the union government through Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to declare Monday as a national holiday so that whole of India can celebrate this win,” Trinamool Congress and union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Ray told IANS.

Celebrations in Shimla as India win

Shimla, April 03: Thousands of cricket fans gathered at the historic Ridge, an open space just above the Mall in Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla, to celebrate India’s World Cup triumph over Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

As Mahendra Singh Dhoni led from the front to take India home, cricket lovers started the celebrations to mark India’s historic victory.

“We have really captured Lanka,” said Anil Sood, a fan.

The fans were also seen singing patriotic songs and carrying the Indian national flag.

New Delhi, April 03: India’s World Cup winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said in jest that he had to perform Saturday night to justify some of the decisions he took in the World Cup final against Sri Lanka.

If he had failed to come good, Dhoni said, a lot questions would have been asked of him as to why Shanthakumaran Sreesanth was preferred to Ravichandran Ashwin and why he came up the orader ahead of in-form Yuvraj Singh.

Celebrations erupt in Canada over India’s victory

Toronto, April 03: Indians across Canada erupted in celebrations when skipper M.S. Dhoni hit the winning six to lift the cricket World Cup for the second time in 28 years.

Indians, Sri Lankans and even Pakistanis had started making beelines in front of restaurants and banquet halls from Vancouver to Toronto to watch the India-Sri Lanka World Cup final at Mumbai on special big screens.

Local boy Dhoni wins praise as Jharkhand celebrates

Ranchi, April 03: This hometown of Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in Jharkhand glittered at night as he led his team in lifting the World Cup after 28 years.

Children, youth and elderly came onto streets to celebrate the Indian victory in Mumbai. The joy of people of Ranchi increased manifold as local boy and India captain hit the winning runs in the match against Sri Lanka.

India reclaim World Cup after 28 years

Mumbai, April 02: Mahendra Singh Dhoni played a captain’s knock and gutsy Gautam Gambhir steered the innings after early jolts to hand India their second World Cup title after 1983, beating Sri Lanka by six wickets at the overflowing Wankhede Stadium here Saturday.

Chasing 275, Dhoni (91 not out) and Gambhir (97) shared 109 runs for the fourth wicket after India made a wobbly start, losing Virender Sehwag in the first over followed by Sachin Tendulkar in the seventh. Both the wickets were taken by fiery Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga.

Dhoni crosses 6,000-run mark, Gambhir 4,000

Mumbai, Aprril 02:Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today crossed the 6,000-run mark in ODI cricket during the World Cup summit clash against Sri Lanka here while teammate Gautam Gambhir also took his tally past 4,000.

Dhoni needed 42 runs to reach the mark before today’s match and he reached the milestone with a double of Lasith Malinga in his 186th ODI.

He is now the seventh Indian batsman to have crossed the 6,000-run mark after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Mohd. Azharuddin, Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag.

Shiv Sena warns Poonam Pandey on Nudity

Mumbai, April 02: Shiv Sena today demanded stern action against 20-year-old model Poonam Pandey, who has said she would strip at the Wankhede Stadium here if India won the World Cup final tomorrow.

“The model has told newspapers that she would strip in the stadium, if India wins the world cup. The government has to take action to stop such things,” Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe said in the Legislative Council today.

“It was shocking to learn that Poonam’s parents have given her permission, as per the interviews,” Gorhe said.

Oman security forces detain protesters

Muscat, April 02: Nearly 60 people have been arrested at a protest demanding the release of those detained in a government crackdown in the Omani city of Sohar.

The arrests were made after security forces clashed with hundreds of people following the Friday Prayers.

CBI slammed for scaling down spectrum scam loss

Chennai, April 02: Tamil Nadu’s opposition parties Saturday slammed the scaling down of the loss to the exchequer due to the spectrum scam in the formal charge filed against disgraced former communications minister and DMK leader A. Raja and others.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) earlier in the day filed in a Delhi court a charge sheet running into 127 pages, along with 80,000 pages of annexure, against Raja and eight other individuals and three firms on the allocation of second generation (2G) telecom spectrum (airwave).

APSRTC to recruit 377 drivers & women conductors

Lorry over turns on Patny flyover one injured

Hyderabad, April 02: One person sustained serious injuries when a loaded lorry lost control and over-turned on the Secunderabad Patny Fly-over here on Saturday.

According to the police, the lorry was going towards Adilabad from Vanasthalipuram. A person who was riding a two-wheeler was injured in the accident. Following this incident, police closed the bridge and stopped vehicular traffic for some time.

UK minister calls for Anglo-French nuke

Scotland, April 02: Liberal Democrat Minister of State for the Armed Forces Nick Harvey has called for a joint nuclear deterrent with France to save Britain billions of pounds and change defence strategy.

Harvey has called for an Anglo-French replacement for Britain’s nuclear weapons on Friday. His proposal has been warmly received by the French ambassador as both countries face defence budget pressure.

In February 2010, the former chief of General Staff General Sir Richard Dannat said Britain does not need to have nuclear deterrent within 10 years time.

Cameron links N Ireland to Libya

England, April 02: British Prime Minister’s speech over Libya at the press conference on Thursday, is reminiscent of his speech on Northern Ireland in 1993.

David Cameron has pretended he has no ‘selfish strategic or oil-related interest’ in Libya. His words echoed landmark declaration on Noerthern Ireland.

The decision was made after voting material failed to arrive in many areas and the poll was rescheduled for Monday.
