Japanese operator to ‘scrap’ four reactors at Fukushima N-plant

Tokyo, March 31: Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumatahas said that four of its six reactors at the earthquake-cum-tsunami nuclear plant in Japan will completely be ‘scrapped’.

“We have no choice but to scrap the No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 units at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station,” The New York Times quoted Katsumata, as saying.

He said the No. 5 and 6 units were still operational, but added any decision to restart the other units would be taken only after consulting with the government and local residents.

ED gets court nod to quiz Hasan Ali at its office

Mumbai, March 31: A Sessions Court on Wednesday granted the Enforcement Directorate (ED) permission to take Pune-based stud farm owner Hasan Ali — arrested for alleged money-laundering and lodged in Arthur Road jail here – to its office till April 1 for interrogation.

On March 25, the Sessions Court had remanded Ali to judicial custody till April 8. Ali, who has allegedly stashed away billions of dollars in Swiss bank accounts, was arrested in the first week of this month.

The ED had sought permission from the court to take Hasan Ali to its office for questioning.

Obama names 2 more Indian-Americans to key posts

Washington, March 31: US President Barack Obama, who already has over two dozen Indian Americans serving in top jobs in his administration, has named two more from the community, Deepa Gupta and Nisha Desai Biswal, to key posts.

While Gupta has been named as a member of National Council on the Arts, Biswal, currently Assistant Administrator for Asia at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), will in addition serve on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.

2G: Asif, Rajeev remanded in CBI custody

New Delhi, March 31: Asif Balwa, a cousin of 2G spectrum case accused Shahid Balwa, and Rajeev B Agarwal, arrested for their alleged role in the scam, were today remanded in CBI custody till April 1 by a Delhi court.

“Both the accused are remanded in police custody till April 1,” Special CBI Judge O P Saini said.

The CBI sought their remand for custodial interrogation, saying they were not revealing “the true facts and circumstances of the criminal conspiracy which led to the transfer of Rs 200 crores to the bank accounts of Kalaignar TV Pvt Ltd.”

Court orders Mahindra Satyam to deposit Rs. 350 cr with IT dept.

Hyderabad, March 31: directed IT company Mahindra Satyam to deposit Rs. 350 crore with Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and also issue it bank guarantee of Rs. 267 crore in its ongoing tax dispute with the Income Tax department.

CBDT has demanded Rs. 617 crore from the company as tax.

Mahindra Satyam Chairman Vineet Nayyar had earlier said that CBDT turned down its requests not to impose the tax, as calculations were based on previous management’s accounts, which had proved to be fictitious.

US back to denying same sex couple visas

Washington, March 31: After a brief reprieve, immigration authorities are once again denying applications for immigration benefits for same sex couples following a legal review.

Chris Bentley, a spokesman for the U.S. Citizenship and Services agency, said Wednesday that a review by lawyers from the Department of Homeland Security, it was concluded that a law prohibiting the government from recognizing same sex marriages must be followed, despite the Obama administration’s decision to stop defending the constitutionality of the law in court.

US offers $5 million bounty for ICE agent killers

Washington, March 31: The Obama administration on Wednesday offered up to a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of the suspected drug traffickers who shot and killed a U.S. immigration agent and wounded another in Mexico last month.

The State Department said its Narcotics Rewards Program would pay the amount to anyone coming forward with information that results in the arrest of those responsible for the February 15 attack that killed Jaime Zapata and wounded Victor Avila. Both men were agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Hyderabadis celebrate India’s win with crackers

AP Congress denies Jagan group charge over House panel

Hyderabad, March 30: Congress in Andhra Pradesh today rejected the allegations of the Jagan group that it had a tacit understanding with Opposition TDP over constitution of a House Committee to look into allegations of irregularities in land allocations for industries in the state.

“Even when Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was alive, there were instances of House Committees being set up. It is not correct to say that we had an understanding with TDP,” Congress chief whip M Bhatti Vikramarka told reporters.

US congratulates India, Pak for cricket diplomacy

New Delhi, March 30: The US today congratulated India and Pakistan for progress made in the peace talks and lauded the leadership of the two countries for initiating “cricket diplomacy”.

“We commend the leaders of both countries for carrying forward with what the media is calling cricket diplomacy,” US Ambassador to India Timothy Roemer said.

In a statement issued here, he also applauded the progress made on a wide range of issues in the just-concluded Home Secretary level talks.

India beat Pakistan by 29 runs

Mohali, March 30: Indian cricket team made his way into the world cup Final by beating the arch rival Pakistan by a margin of 29 runs.

The 29-run victory, which enabled India to maintain its unbeaten record against the arch rivals in 36 years of World Cup history, was the result of some brilliant bowling and fielding show by the home side after its much-vaunted batting line-up had posted a modest 260 for nine to which man-of-the match Sachin Tendulkar made a lucky 85-run contribution.

Actor Shiney Ahuja gets seven years RI for raping maid

Mumbai, March 30 :Relying on circumstantial evidence, a fast-track court today convicted Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja for raping his maid and sentenced him to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) although the victim had turned hostile during the trial.

The actor was also fined Rs 3,000 by Sessions Judge P M Chouhan.

However, Ahuja was acquitted of the charges of criminal intimidation and wrongful confinement, Public Prosecutor Kashinath Dighe told reporters who were not allowed in the court as the proceedings were in-camera.

Lokayukta, forest dept raid IPS official’s house

Shimoga (Karnataka), March 30: Lokayukta police together with Forest Department officials today raided the house of Murugan, an IPS official, and seized timber valued at Rs three lakh illegally stored there.

Murugan, who was Superintendent of Police of Shimoga was promoted to IGP rank two days ago.

Acting on a tip-off, officials of the Forest Enforcement Department along with the Lokayukta police assistance raided the house and seized the timber, police said.

Hyderabad, March 30: Four months after he quit the Congress, Y S Jaganmohan Reddy will face his first major political test in May when he contests the by-elections from his family pocket-borough of Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh.

Jaganmohan, who won the seat with a huge margin on a Congress ticket in 2009, will face stiff competition from his former party, which is said to be contemplating to field his uncle and state minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy.

Rupee up by four paise against dollar on firm equities

Mumbai, March 30: The rupee today appreciated by four paise to close at 44.74/75 against the US dollar on enlarged portfolio investments due to bullish equities.

Dealers, however, said that some dollar buying by importers, mainly oil refiners, kept the rupee rise under control.

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today flared up by another 169.38 points or 0.89 per cent, gaining a total 1,203.78 points or 9.87 per cent in straight seven sessions of gains.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) injected nearly USD 1.02 billion in last six trading sessions since March 22.
