Oman protests spread as road to port blocked

Sohar, March 01: Demonstrators blocked roads to a main port in northern Oman and looted a nearby supermarket Monday, part of protests to demand more jobs and political reform that have spread to the sultanate’s capital.

A doctor said six people had been killed in clashes between stone-throwing protesters and police Sunday in the northern industrial town of Sohar. Oman’s health minister said one person had been killed and 20 wounded.

Boman Irani injured on FALTU sets

Mumbai, March 01: Actor Boman Irani has been injured on the sets of his upcoming Bollywood film FALTU. The incident happened, when the actor knocked his head into a glass door on Saturday.

Boman Irani tweeted, “Lots of people inquiring as to what happened on Saturday. Walked into a glass door, hurt my head /knee. Swelled up and dazed. Fine now!” Though, it is a minor injury, the actor will be in rest for a few days, says report.

Islami Bank spends 8pc profit on militancy

Dhaka, March 01: Islami Bank Bangladesh is spending eight percent of its profit to fund militants in the country, State Minister for Home Shamsul Huq Tuku has said.

The bank is spending the money through the Islami Bank Foundation, he said at a meeting at the secretariat yesterday.

According to the statement on its website, the bank had a net profit of Tk 352.8 crore in the nine months to September 2010.

PM bats for Shakib

Dhaka, March 01: Dismissing criticism that Shakib Al Hasan should not have opted to field first in the World Cup match against India, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the decision was right.

“Who can say for sure we would have done well batting first?” she asked while presiding over the weekly cabinet meeting at the secretariat.

“They [Bangladesh cricket team] could have been bowled out for 170 to 180 runs. So, Shakib’s decision in my view was right,” a minister quoted the prime minister as saying.

3 die, 75 hurt as train rams truck

Dhaka, March 01: Three people were killed and at least 75 injured in a train-truck collision at an ‘unauthorised’ level crossing at Nandalalpur in Pagla yesterday morning.

Two of the injured Md Shahid, 40, and Md Jasim Uddin, 45, succumbed to their wounds at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the morning while another unidentified 40-year-old woman died in the afternoon.

Of the rest, 11 were admitted to DMCH while the others were sent to different clinics and hospitals in Dhaka and Narayanganj.

‘All my people love me,’ Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi says

Tripoli, March 01: Libya’s beleaguered strongman Muammar Gaddafi insists “all my people love me” in an interview with ABC television.

“All my people love me. They would die to protect me,” the veteran Libyan leader said, according to ABC’s Christiane Amanpour in a message sent on her Twitter account.

Gaddafi, who has ruled his north African country for more than 41 years, also refused to acknowledge there were any demonstrations on the streets of Tripoli, Amanpour added.

Yemeni claims CIA torture in secret prison

Sanaa, March 01: A Yemeni alleges he was arrested by the CIA in Tanzania in 2003, flown to Djibouti to be tortured for a fortnight, and left languishing for years in secret prisons in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Mohammed al-Asad, 51, had been living with his family in Tanzania since 1985, when he was arrested and put on a plane to an unidentified country later found to be Djibouti, the complaint says.

The suit was lodged with the Gambia-based African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in December 2009 but only made public today by US rights groups.

Double-decker bus services star again after 6 year gap

Trivananthapuram, March 01: A double-decker bus of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation will start plying in the capital from Tuesday after a gap of six years. Along with this, a 16-metre vestibule bus will also start service in the city.

The double-decker and the vestibule bus purchased by the KSRTC for over Rs.31 lakh each will be flagged off by Transport Minister Jose Thettayil at East Fort. Public Works Minister M. Vijayakumar and Ports and Youth Welfare Minister V. Surendran Pillai will attend the function.

Case against Rosaiah

Hyderabad, March 01: Justice Raja Elango of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday permitted the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to register and investigate in a case wherein former Chief Minister K. Rosaiah is one of the accused. However, the Judge said the accused may not be arrested.

It may be recalled that Mohanlal, a practicing advocate, filed a complaint before the Special Court for ACB cases stating that the former Chief Minister and some officials illegally got issued a GO regularising occupation of a prime land in Ameerpet, Hyderabad.

Telangana Congress MLAs boycott Assembly

Hyderabad, March 01: 2HYDERABAD: Adding to the woes of the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh, party legislators from Telangana on Monday decided to boycott both the houses of the state legislature to demand a bill in parliament for formation of a separate Telangana state.

Members of the legislative assembly boycotted the house on Monday while members of the legislative council would follow suit from Tuesday.

500 Lakh crores of black money of Indian in foreign banks: Ramdev

New Delhi, March 01: Claiming that black money to the tune of Rs. 500 lakh crore was stashed by Indians in foreign banks, yoga guru Baba Ramdev advocated for bringing those money back.

Continuing his tirade against corruption, he said if brought back, the huge amount of black money could change the economy of the country.

“The finance minister in his budget speech was categorical in admitting that black money and corruption were the two major concerns for the country. But the steps he pledged to take are not sufficient,” he told a gathering here.

Software firm cheats nearly 2,000 persons in AP

Hyderabad, March 01: A software company from the city allegedly duped nearly 2,000 persons in Andhra Pradesh and the neighbouring States of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra with false promises of regular monthly income by working at home with computers.

The company owners reportedly based in Nellore had set up an office in Chikkadpally and began luring persons stating that they would help secure thousands of rupees of monthly income by working for a few hours online. The company had created a website and asked the members to click on the advertisements displayed on the website.

Danish ship taken hostage by Somali pirates

Copenhagen, March 01: A Danish ship with seven crew members on board has been captured by pirates off the coast of Somalia, Denmark’s foreign ministry said Monday evening.The captured ship is said to be carrying a family of five, including three children aged 12 to 16, their parents, and two other adult helpers, Xinhua reported Tuesday.

The Danish Navy’s Operational Command received a distress signal from the sailing ship Thursday. It is now confirmed that the vessel has been captured by pirates, the foreign ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

Salaries on time for GHMC staff
