Los Angeles, March 02: Veteran singer Elton John is likely to make a cameo appearance in hit TV musical “Glee”.

According to “Glee” star Matthew Morrison, John and show creator Ryan Murphy have discussed the possibility of him appearing in an upcoming episode.

“He and Ryan Murphy just sat down and had a conversation about it. I hope that (happens). (It) would be awesome!” accesshollywood.com quoted him as saying.

Minogue addicted to work

London, March 02: Pop singer Kylie Minogue has revealed she always thinks about retiring after a tour, but is totally addicted to work.

“When I was 20 there was no way I could see myself touring at 43. I have a feeling I’ll be saying the same in 20 years,” dailystar.co.uk quoted the 42-year-old as saying.

UN suspends Libya’s membership in Human Rights Council

New York, March 02: The UN General Assembly decided Tuesday to suspend Libya’s membership in the 47-nation Human Rights Council after charging the government with crimes against humanity in the killings of civilian protesters.

The 192-country General Assembly’s decision was taken by consensus without a vote count. None of the UN members in the assembly opposed the resolution suspending Libya, when officially asked by Assembly President Joseph Deiss.

Timberlake comfy with love making scenes

London, March 02: Pop singer Justin Timberlake admits it was “easy” to film love making scenes with Mila Kunis in an upcoming movie.

The 30-year-old star will be seen in hot love making scenes with curvet actress Mila Kunis in his new flick “Friends With Benefits”, reports dailystar.co.uk.

“That’s an easy thing to do. I think I could speak for all the men in the world when I say that’s the easy part,” he said.

“You should put on good music and something that makes you feel great. I love a pair of high, sexy stilettos with a beautiful dress, but you have to find out what works for you – whether it’s doing the whole smoky eyes thing or a natural look,” she told Cosmopolitan magazine.

London university looking into Gaddafi’s son plagiarism claims

London, March 02: The London School of Economics (LSE) said Tuesday it was looking into claims that Colonel Muammer Gaddafi’s son, Saif al-Islam, had plagiarised his doctorate thesis.

“LSE is aware that there are allegations of plagiarism concerning the PhD thesis of Saif Gaddafi,” the university said in a statement.

“The School takes all allegations of plagiarism very seriously, and is looking into the matter in accordance with standard LSE procedures.”

Saif al-Islam studied at the LSE between 2003 and 2008 and left with a Master of Science degree and a doctorate.

Noon shares lower on oil jitters

Melbourne, March 02: Shares were lower by noon as tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices weigh down the market.

At midday (AEDT), the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 34.6 points, or 0.72 per cent, at 4791.8 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index was down 32.5 points, or 0.66 per cent, at 4887.9 points.

On the ASX 24, the March share price index futures contract was 45 points lower at 4780 points, with 25,006 contracts traded.

Dollar lower after GDP figures

Sydney, March 02: The dollar was lower today after the December quarter national accounts failed to wow markets.

At midday (AEDT), the local unit was trading at US101.37c, down from US101.64c yesterday.

Since 7am, the dollar traded between US101.22c and US101.48c.

CMC Markets foreign exchange dealer Tim Waterer said the local unit fell from US101.45c to US101.22c in the minutes after the national accounts were published at 11.30am.

“The actual result didn’t miss the forecast,” he said.

US launches new missile defence program

Washington, March 02: The US is sending a special radar-equipped warship to the Mediterranean Sea next week, the first step in the development of a broad anti-ballistic missile system to protect Europe against a potential Iranian nuclear threat, the Pentagon says.

The move marks the first of the Obama administration’s four-phase plan to put land- and sea-based radars and interceptors in several European locations during the next decade.

Freeway body parts run over several times

Sydney, March 02: Human remains found strewn across a major freeway north of Sydney had been run over several times by passing motorists, police say.

The discovery of the body parts was reported to police by one of those motorists, who accidentally ran over a part, at about 11.45pm yesterday near the Gosford exit at Somersby, on the New South Wales Central Coast.

“It appears, at this stage of the investigation, the body has been run over numerous times,” Detective Sergeant Darren Deamer from Gosford police said.

NZ PM still keen to host Cup match in Christchurch

Wellington, March 02: New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says it will take months rather than weeks to decide whether or not to host seven scheduled Rugby World Cup matches in earthquake devastated Christchurch.

Key says his “strong preference” is to proceed as planned because “it sends a very strong international message that Christchurch is going through a rebuilding phase, and equally, if we don’t, sadly the message is it’s not.”

Asian shares fall early on global oil fears

Tokyo, March 02: Stocks in Asia fell broadly in early trading Wednesday, following steep drops in the U.S. on concerns unrest in Iran and Libya could cause higher oil prices and hinder the global economic recovery.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 stock average was down 1.6 percent to 10,578.4, while South Korea’s Kospi slipped 0.35 percent to 1,932.5. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was off 0.8 percent, and shares in New Zealand were also lower.

American skipper wins 3rd leg of ocean race

Wellington, March 02: American skipper Brad Van Liew has won his third consecutive leg in the Velux 5 Oceans race, pulling into Punta del Este, Uruguay, eight days after rounding Cape Horn in his 60-foot sloop.

The 43-year-old skipper sailed 6,530 nautical miles from Wellington, New Zealand, to Punta del Este in 23 days, 17 hours and 46 minutes.

Van Liew won this race in 2002, when it was called the Around Alone, and was third in 1999.

Cup winner Coutts brings RC44 regatta to San Diego

New York, March 02: Sixteen years after he took the America’s Cup from the United States, Russell Coutts is back in San Diego with his own regatta.

The Oracle RC44 Cup, sailed in 44-foot sloops co-designed by Coutts, runs from Wednesday through Sunday on San Diego Bay.

It’s the first major international regatta in San Diego since the 1995 America’s Cup, when Coutts’ Team New Zealand swept Dennis Conner in five races.

Astronauts install last U.S. room on space station

Cape Canaveral, March 02: Astronauts aboard the International Space Station gently maneuvered the final piece of the U.S. portion of the outpost into place on Tuesday, completing a construction job that began more than 12 years ago.

The final U.S. module is combination storage room and research lab. It previously was used to haul cargo to and from the station, a $100 billion project of 16 nations. The refurbished module, formerly known as Leonardo, was the primary cargo carried into orbit aboard the space shuttle Discovery, which blasted off Feb. 24 for its 39th and final mission.

Rising status of women linked to more smoking

London, March 02: Millions of women in developing countries risk disease and early death in the coming decades as their rising economic and political status leads them to smoke more, researchers said on Tuesday.

An analysis in 74 countries found that men are five times more likely to smoke than women in countries with lower rates of female empowerment, such as China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Uganda.

71-year-old bridegroom ties the knot

Helmet compulsory for pillion riders

Jaipur, March 02: After a month long awareness campaign on road safety, wearing a helmet became compulsory for two-wheeler pillion riders in Jaipur on Tuesday.

“From today, helmet is necessary for pillion drivers too because they are equally exposed to the risk of head injuries in accidents, like the driver of a two-wheeler,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rohit Mahajan said.

The campaign on road safety finished on Monday, he said adding that the city traffic police have already started penalising the defaulters.

Gaddafi son denies civilian attacks

Tripoli, March 02: Seif al-Islam, the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has denied that his father’s regime has attacked civilians.

In an interview with Britain’s Sky News television recorded in the Libyan capital overnight, he challenged Western powers and journalists to find evidence of the Libyan regime using the military against its own people or bombing areas of Tripoli.

“Give me one single evidence,” the leader’s son said, saying journalists were free to go anywhere in the country.

Five-month-old stabbed, father shot by police after alleged abduction in California

California, March 02: A 17-year-old father was shot by police today after he allegedly abducted his five-month-old son, who was stabbed during the ordeal in Palmdale, California, authorities said.

Christopher Earl Glass – who has no custodial rights – fled with the baby after a fight with the boy’s mother, KTLA reported.

He then sent messages to the boy’s mother threatening to harm the baby, and police were able to track him down.

When he tried to flee he was shot by police, who then discovered the baby had a stab wound.

World’s richest man to open free museum

Mexico, March 02: The world’s richest man, telecom tycoon Carlos Slim, is opening a new museum in Mexico City where he plans to share his vast collection of fine art and collectables with the public without charging visitors a single peso.

Reporters got an early glimpse today of the new Soumaya Museum, named after the late wife of Slim – whose fortune was estimated at $US53.5 billion by Forbes magazine last year, topping Microsoft founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett.

Britain axes 11,000 armed forces jobs

London, March 02: Britain says it will axe around 11,000 armed forces jobs as part of defence cuts brought in to help reduce the country’s record budget deficit.

The announcement today added detail to the broad figures outlined by Finance Minister George Osborne in last October’s spending review.

The size of Britain’s armed forces will be reduced by 17,000 personnel by 2015 and will be partly achieved by slowing down recruitment.

No NATO accord on Libya intervention

London, March 02: Top US defence leaders said NATO countries have yet to agree on any military intervention in Libya, adding that imposing a no-fly zone there would be “extraordinarily” complex.

“There is no unanimity within NATO for the use of armed force,” Defence Secretary Robert Gates said in a joint press conference with the US military’s top officer, Admiral Mike Mullen.

“And the kinds of options that have been talked about in the press and elsewhere also have their own consequences and second and third order effects, so they need to be considered very carefully.”

UK scientists develop first reliable prostate cancer test

London, March 02: Scientists in the UK unveiled the first reliable test for diagnosing early prostate cancer, Sky News reported today.

The urine test is so accurate that it could be used to screen all older men for the disease.

Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer, killing more than 10,000 men in the UK every year.

Police officer accidentally shoots pistol at his boot and injures his toe

Mebourne, March 02: A Victorian police officer has a bruised toe after accidentally firing a service gun during training.

The leading senior constable inadvertently fired one of the force’s new Smith and Wesson semi-automatic firearms during a training exercise in Melbourne’s west yesterday, police said.

The bullet grazed his boot and caused a small bruise to the officer’s toe, police said.

No one else was injured.
