Tunisia pres. sets date for elections

Tunis, March 04: Tunisia’s interim president has announced the date for holding elections for a council of representatives tasked with writing a new constitution.

Fouad Mebazaa said that he and the caretaker government will stay in power until the elections are held, which are set for July 24, Reuters reported.

Once elected, the legislative council can either appoint a new government or ask the incumbent one to stay in power until general elections are held.

Setting up of a constitutional council is a concession to one of the demands of the revolution in the country.

Israel rearrests Hamas lawmaker

Jerusalem, March 04: Israeli forces have rearrested a Hamas legislator, Azzam Salhab, outside the occupied southern West Bank town of al-Khalil, also known as Hebron.

Salhab, 54, who was released from prison five months ago, was once again arrested along with some other legislators on Wednesday while passing through an Israeli checkpoint on the road between Ramallah and al-Khalil, AFP quoted Palestinian security officials as saying on Thursday.

Marines join Libyan opposition

Tripoli, March 04: A marine training group says it is joining the opposition in Libya’s eastern port city of Tobruk, located more than 1,200 kilometers east of Tripoli.

“We offer condolences to the families of our martyrs, the martyrs of our beloved Libya. We announce we are joining the February 17 youth revolution. God is the greatest! Long live free Libya,” Reuters quoted Colonel Abdel Nasser Ibrahim Al Senousi as saying on Wednesday.

Gaddafi has lost control over large parts of Libya during the past two weeks, as opposition forces continue to approach the Libyan capital.

Murder suspect dies in custody

Hyderabad, March 04: In yet another case of custodial death, a suspect in a murder case was found dead in Miyapur police station under the Cyberabad Commissionerate on Wednesday. Though police claimed the suspect hanged himself in the bathroom, there were rumours that the person died due to thrashing by police. The person died while undergoing treatment.

According to police, the deceased Mekala Anjaiah (37) was taken into custody for questioning in a murder case.

He was found hanging from the iron grills of the ventilator in the toilet yesterday morning.

OU students block AP Express at Secunderabad

Hyderabad, March 03: Students of Osmania University on Wednesday blocked the AP Express bound to New Delhi for a brief period at Secunderabad railway station as part of the `rail roko’ call given by the TJAC demanding introduction of Telangana Bill in the Parliament.

At around 7 a.m in the morning, more than 20 students reached platform No 1 of the Secunderabad railway station and squatted in front of the AP Express which chugged into the station from Nampally on its way to New Delhi. The students raised pro-Telangana slogans and climbed atop the engine of the train.

Telangana lawyers trigger civil war in Congress

Hyderabad, March 04: The siege of Eluru MP Kavuri Sambasiva Rao’s Banjara Hills residence by Telangana lawyers on Wednesday led to a confrontation between Telangana and Andhra leaders of the Congress.

The lawyers, accusing Sambasiva Rao of working against the Telangana cause, marched to his residence and staged a dharna, raising slogans that they would not allow such leaders to live in Hyderabad or hold meetings. Though police detained them, the incident triggered a rash of protests, challenges and counter-challenges between leaders of the two regions.

Rs 3 lakh crore investments for State: CM

Hyderabad, March 03: Even as the unrest in the state continues with regard to the demand for separate Telangana, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Wednesday said that investments to the tune of Rs 3 lakh crore is coming to the state in the next few months.

“It might not be right at this juncture to name the companies that are showing interest to invest in the state.

Naidu seeks Rs 10 lakh for kin of victims

Srikakulam, March 03: Opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu had to face some embarrassing moments at Vaddithandra, with the locals raising ‘go back’ slogans.

The TDP chief visited Vattithandra and Kakarapalli villages in Srikakulam district where people have been protesting against the setting up of a thermal power plant.

Naidu demanded that the state government pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of two persons killed and Rs 5 lakh each to those injured in police firing at Kakarapalli village.

Pregnant woman dies in doctors’ care

Adilabad, March 03: A pregnant woman, who was admitted to the government area hospital in Mancherial on Wednesday, died due to alleged negligence of doctors.

Angered over the death, relatives of the deceased damaged glass doors and furniture in the hospital and later staged a rasta roko there.

According to sources, Allam Sravanti, a native of Hanuman basthi in Bellampalli, was admitted to the hospital last night for delivery of her first baby.

But doctors told her kin that a Caesarian section was necessary and asked them to take her to Karimnagar hospital.

Rail roko boost to Million March plan

Hyderabad, March 03: Enthused by the success of the rail roko, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has decided to go ahead with the Million March to Hyderabad on March 10 despite opposition from parents that the protest might cause hardship to students.

The TRS, however, demanded that the Intermediate Board should reschedule the examinations to begin on March 7 so as to avoid inconvenience to students.

UJAC slams TRS resolution

Guntur, March 03: Political Joint Action Committee convener N Samuel on Wednesday condemned the Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s resolution that students should boycott the Intermediate examinations as part of the protest demanding a separate Telangana state.

With the move of the TRS, lakhs of students would lose the opportunity of appearing for various national-level competitive examinations, he said.

Further, their performance would be affected with the postponement of the examinations, he said.

TDP ‘no’ to JC’s boycott idea

Hyderabad, March 03: In a curt ‘no’ to the proposal made by Congress leader JC Diwakar Reddy yesterday to TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, the Seemandhra MLAs of the TDP have decided not to boycott the ongoing budget session of the Assembly.

“It is astonishing that Diwakar Reddy has met Naidu.

Reddy is trying to confuse the people. The Seemandhra TDP MLAs will attend the Assembly session and discuss people’s issues. There is no need for the TDP MLAs to boycott the session,” TDP politburo member Yanamala Ramakrishnudu said.

SSC Board orders inquiry into Nekkonda incident

Warangal, March 03: The SSC Board on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the issue of damaged hall-tickets found on railway tracks near Nekkonda on Monday to initiate action against the culprits.

It is learnt that the Board asked the authorities concerned to obtain duplicate hall-tickets to enable SSC candidates take the examination without any difficulty.

2 students die after falling from building

Bhadrachalam,March 03: Elasagaram Rajender (19) and Jetti Pratap (19), two PSR Degree College students died when they fell down from a three-storied building this morning in Bhadrachalam.

According to police, the Rajender, a first year MPC student, is a resident of Koyagudem in Koutala mandal of Adilabad district while Pratap, a first year commerce student, belongs to Nallaballi in Vardhannapet mandal of Warangal district.

Chief priest lashes out at TTD

Tirupati, March 03: Differences between TTD administration and Srivari temple chief priest AV Ramana Deekshitulu came to the fore once again, with the later accusing the former of taking unilateral decisions regarding Agama rules to be followed in the temple and not taking the opinion of the hereditary archakas.

SBH, RTC in a high decibel decimal row

Warangal, March 03: Blame game is on over the transfer of salaries in lakhs of rupees from the State Bank of Hyderabad to RTC employees in Jangaon, Warangal district.

The gaffe had turned RTC staff into ‘lakhpatis’, though, for a few hours on Tuesday.

Both RTC and SBH authorities are probing the incident to zero in on the persons responsible.

On Tuesday, RTC employees received amounts, 100 times more than their actual salaries, in their SBH accounts through online transfer.

Obama calls on Gaddafi to leave

Washington, March 04: US President Barack Obama renewed calls for Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi to step down Wednesday and said anyone carrying out violence against innocent civilians on Gaddafi’s behalf will be held accountable.

“Muammer Gaddafi has lost legitimacy to lead and he must leave,” Obama said at a press conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon. “It’s the right thing to do.”

Obama warned officials close to Gaddafi that their actions are being monitored and attacks on civilians will not be tolerated by the international community.
