India manager ‘killed by workers’

New Delhi, March 04: A senior manager of an Indian steel factory has been burnt to death in the eastern state of Orissa, allegedly by a group of workers.

RS Roy of Graphite India Limited died on the way to a hospital in Bolangir district on Thursday evening.

Police said the workers stopped the vehicle carrying Mr Roy and set it on fire. The driver and another employee in the vehicle managed to flee.

The factory had recently suspended 25 workers, reports say.

Tension was running high at the factory after rumours that some of these workers would be retrenched soon, the police said.

BSP MLA held for attacking UP Cong chief”s house

Lucknow, March 04: Controversial BSP MLA Jitendra Singh Babloo along with another party leader Intizar Ahmad Abdi were on Thursday arrested in connection with arson at UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi’s residence two years back.

Singh, who represents Bikapur constituency in Faizabad, and Abdi, chairman of Ganna Sanstha having minister of state status, were picked up by the CB-CID late evening and handed over to Hussainganj police, where a case was lodged, official sources said here.

Gamal Mubarak attempted suicide with poisoned tea

Cairo, March 04: Former-Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak’s second son Gamal attempted suicide in the days following his father’s ouster after 30 years as the president of the Arab world’s most populous country.

Long considered a successor to his father’s presidency, Gamal tried to take his life by drinking poisoned tea as Egyptian authorities sought to retrieve millions of dollars depositied in banks around the world, Algerian newspaper Ech.Chourouk reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources.

CBI raids Prasar Bharati CEO’s office, residence

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday raided the offices and residences of suspended Prasar Bharati chief executive officer (CEO) BS Lalli and Waseem Ahmed Dehlvi of Zoom Communications for their alleged involvement in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) broadcasting scam. The raids started at 8am and were simultaneously conducted at four places, CBI spokesperson Vineeta Thakur told.

CBI registered an FIR against Lalli on Thursday night.

Obama wants Gaddafi out, sends jets to Libya

Tripoli, March 04: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has lost legitimacy and must leave office, US President Barack Obama said while authorising the use of military aircrafts for humanitarian purposes in the strife-torn African nation on Thursday.

“Muammar Gaddafi has lost legitimacy to lead, and he must leave,” Obama said at a White House news conference.

Accused WikiLeaks source Manning stripped, left naked in military cell

London, March 04: The lawyer representing the US Army Private accused of sharing classified documents with WikiLeaks claims his client was stripped of his clothes and left naked in a cell for seven hours.

David E. Coombs wrote about the incident at the Quantico Marine base in Virginia, where Pfc Bradley Manning has been held since July, in an entry on his website, the New York Times reported.

“This type of degrading treatment is inexcusable and without justification,” Mr Coombs wrote. “It is an embarrassment to our military justice system and should not be tolerated.

According to the sources, Vidya has been signed by the team of Rana to play one of the three leading ladies opposite Rajni.

Rajni, who is playing triple roles in the movie, will be seen romancing Deepika Padukone, Vidya Balan and Rekha.

Rekha and Vidya Balan were signed earlier for the movie.

PM visiting Jammu and Kashmir today

New Delhi, March 04: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who visits Jammu and Kashmir Friday morning is to meet a series of delegations, including some political groups, social and refugee organisations. He will also attend the convocation of the Agriculture University and inauguration of flats for migrants here.

A meeting was held here on Thursday evening to review the arrangements for the visit.

Cong says efforts on to find solution to Telangana issue

New Delhi, March 04: With Telangana issue becoming a sticky affair, Congress on Thursday asked the stakeholders not to “muddy the water” before a logical solution acceptable to all is not found out to the vexed issue.

“It is a delicate complex and complicated issue and efforts are being made with utmost sincerity to take it to a logical conclusion,” party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

Sherry Rehman next on terror hit list?

London, March 04: With two of three Pakistani politicians who opposed the blasphemy law assassinated, friends of the third, the glamorous Sherry Rehman, now fear for her life.

Gunmen have shot dead Punjab governor Salman Taseer and minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti, the only Christian in the Pakistani government.

Rehman, known for her outspoken views, led the efforts to reform the blasphemy law after Aasia Bibi, a Christian mother of four, was sentenced to death for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad.

Rehman was joined by Taseer and Bhatti.

Upto 10 years jail term for child sexual offenders

New Delhi, March 04: A pathbreaking Bill dealing exclusively with sexual offences against children was passed by the Union Cabinet today providing for a 10 year jail term.

which may even extend to life imprisonment. The Protection of Children Againat Sexual Offences Bill, 2011, also legalised consensual sex with a person aged between 16-18 years.

The new law will cover all new aspects of sexual offences against children not covered elsewhere.

S Korea coastguard shoots Chinese crewman

Seoul, March 04: South Korea’s coastguard has shot and wounded a Chinese crewman after coming under attack aboard a boat suspected of illegal fishing, Yonhap news agency said today.

The agency, quoting coastguard officials, said the shooting happened after the 30-tonne vessel and another Chinese fishing boat were captured yesterday about 100 kilometres south-west of the west coast town of Taean.

Coastguard spokesmen could not immediately be reached for confirmation of the incident, which would mark the first time the South has opened fire.

5.7 magnitude quake rocks Philippines

Surigao, March 04: Officials say a 5.7 magnitude earthquake has rocked the southern Philippines, collapsing the walls of some houses and sending residents fleeing from their homes. There are no reports of injuries.

The government’s seismology institute said today that the moderately strong earthquake struck offshore, 54km east of Surigao City.

Naidu doses his eyes to vertical divide in TDP

Hyderabad, March 04: Leader of the opposition and Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu confined himself to his chambers in the State Legislative Assembly today while his party MLAs from the Telangana region boycotted the session demanding state’s bifurcation and their Seemandhra brethren exhibited placards in the House demanding that the state remain united.

Naidu associated himself neither with the Telangana MLAs nor with Seemandhra MLAs. On the other hand, he was busy meeting party MLAs on the forthcoming Legislative Council elections.

Mubarak ally quits as Egyptian PM

Cairo, March 04: Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq has resigned unexpectedly, sparking celebrations from protesters who want a purge of the remnants of ousted president Hosni Mubarak’s regime.

The country’s military rulers said on Thursday that Shafiq would be replaced by Essam Sharaf, a former transport minister who joined the rallies in Cairo’s Tahrir Square that led to Mubarak’s resignation on February 11.

Accountant found hanging in hostel room

New Delhi, March 04: A 26-year-old accountant with a Noida-based company in Uttar Pradesh was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room here, police said Thursday.

Radhey Mohan, originally from Roorkee town of Uttarakhand, hanged himself at least two days ago.

Radhey worked as an accountant with IRA Infrastructure company of Noida and was living at Apex Hostel in Shakarpur area.

“He was discovered hanging Thursday morning when one of his friends came to visit him after he failed to answer his phone since the last two days,” said a senior police officer.

Servant commits suicide in employer’s house

New Delhi, March 04: A 22-year-old servant committed suicide inside his employer’s house by hanging himself from the ceiling fan, police said Thursday.

Santosh Yadav, originally from Begusarai in Bihar, was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan by his employer, Bharat Thakkar, in Anand Vihar area of east Delhi Thursday morning.

Yadav was employed with Thakkars’ for the last fifteen years.

No suicide note was found. “Bharat Thakkar is being questioned and we are looking into every angle,” said a senior police officer.

Four held for robbery

New Delhi, March 04: Four people, including two minors, have been apprehended for assaulting and robbing a man outside a railway station in west Delhi, police said Thursday.

“Naseeb, 19, Deepak, 23 and two minors were held from Shakur Basti area,” said a senior police officer.

The four were held on a complaint filed by Sher Singh that he was beaten up and robbed by four unidentified people near the Shakur Basti railway station Tuesday night.

Sub-inspector hangs himself

New Delhi, March 04: A Delhi Police sub-inspector committed suicide by hanging himself inside his residence here, police said Thursday.

Rishi Shankar, 30, was found hanging inside his house at Krishna Apartments at K.N.Katju Marg in north Delhi Wednesday night.

“No suicide note has been found. The cause of suicide is still not clear but statements of the family members reveal that he was having some household problems,” said a senior police officer.

Three held for murder

New Delhi, March 04: Three people have been arrested for killing a man after he insulted one of them for carrying on an affair with his wife, police said Thursday.

“Jamna Prasad, Ram and Santosh were apprehended from Sarai Kale Khan area in south Delhi Wednesday night for killing Tika Ram and dumping his body on the banks of the Yamuna river,” said a senior police officer.

The body was found Wednesday.

During interrogation, police found out that Jamna Prasad was having an illicit relationship with Tika Ram’s wife for last two years.

Man involved in four dacoities held

New Delhi, March 04: A criminal involved in four dacoities has been arrested in east Delhi, police said Thursday.

“Akbar, a resident of New Seemapuri in east Delhi, was arrested from his house Wednesday,” said a senior police officer.

Police recovered a country-made pistol and live cartridges from him.

Akbar, along with his associates, looted Rs.4.5 lakh from a house in Farsh Bazar area, police said.

In 2009, he robbed a house in Anand Vihar area of Rs.1 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs.2 lakh.
