Riyadh, March 05: Saudi Arabia was yesterday drafting up to 10,000 security personnel into its north-eastern Shia Muslim provinces, clogging the highways into Dammam and other cities with busloads of troops in fear of next week’s “day of rage” by what is now called the “Hunayn Revolution”. Saudi Arabia’s worst nightmare – the arrival of the new Arab awakening of rebellion and insurrection in the kingdom – is now casting its long shadow over the House of Saud.

UK’s queen Elizabeth to make historic Irish visit

London, March 05: Britain’s queen Elizabeth is to travel to Ireland this year in the first official visit by a British monarch since before the Irish state gained independence from British rule in 1921.

No date or itinerary was given for the state visit, announced on Friday by Buckingham Palace and Irish President Mary McAleese.

The 84-year-old queen will be accompanied on the visit by her husband, prince Philip.

The last British monarch to visit Ireland was King George V, who went in 1911.

Judge explains why Godhra killing was pre-planned

Ahmedabad, March 05: Special judge PR Patel, who on March 1 sent 11 convicts to gallows and 20 to jail for life in the Godhra train carnage case, explained on Friday in his 825-page judgment the logic behind upholding the conspiracy theory.

As per the order, the Sabarmati Express train massacre in which 59 kar sevaks were burnt alive would not have been possible without pre-planning. The court observed that Godhra is known for its history of communal riots and this was not the first incident where Hindus were burnt alive.

Denise Richards ‘disgusted’ with Sheen

Los Angeles, March 05: Actress Denise Richards is “disgusted” with her former husband Charlie Sheen and his womanising ways, and feels they could be harmful to their two girls.

Richards feels her children, six-year-old Sam and five-year-old Lola, should keep a distance from Sheen’s two “goddesses” Bree Olsen and Natalie Kenly, partly because of allegations that at least one of them may be using drugs, reports tmz.com.

12 killed in Libya blasts

Tripoli, March 05: At least 12 people were killed and 26 injured in two blasts at a weapon depot near Libya’s western city of Benghazi, Xinhua said, citing an Al Jazeera TV report.

The Libyan government said that the blasts that took place Friday were not caused by bombing of the security forces, without confirming the toll in the blasts.

The internet services were completely cut off Friday, after a few days of partially- functioning services, Xinhua said.

Contradictory information about the clashes in Libya came from official and rebel sources.

Palestinians Suffer from Tear Gas in Jerusalem, West Bank Villages

Jerusalem, March 05: Several Palestinians, mainly elderly, suffered from tear gas inhalation Friday when Israeli police and soldiers showered homes and protests with tear gas in East Jerusalem and several West Bank villages, according to witnesses.

In Jerusalem, a number of elderly Palestinians were hurt and had to be admitted to hospital, with one reported in critical condition, when Israeli police showered the neighborhood of Silwan with dozens of tear gas canisters, falling mainly in and around the crowded homes.

Shiv Sena demands IIT entrance test in regional languages

Mumbai, March 05: The Shiv Sena has urged the ministry of human resources development to undertake reforms in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) by allowing entrance examination to be written in regional languages to facilitate meritorious students from rural areas get admission to the IITs.

The issue was raised by the Shiv Sena MP Bharatkumar Raut in the Rajya Sabha. The government remained non-committal as regional parties across north and south India rallied around the Sena.

The ‘mummy’ of 1,500 children in Mumbai

Mumbai, March 05: Forty-year-old Grace John is the mother of an 18-year-old son. However, Grace is addressed as ‘mummy’ by nearly 1,500 children.

Grace is a savior to the hundreds of abandoned or orphaned street children, who call the various railway stations across the central and western lines their home.

She earns just Rs10,000 a month but still manages to support the street. An outreach supervisor at Shelter Don Bosco, Grace seems to have lost the count of the number of children she healed on the streets or brought to the shelter for rehabilitation.

Bangladesh fans throw stones at West Indies bus

Dhaka, March 05: Bangladeshi fans, who greeted the opening of the World Cup with a glorious celebration two weeks ago, stoned the West Indies team bus on Friday after a humiliating defeat for the home team.

As the victorious West Indians sat in the bus shortly after leaving the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium to return to the hotel after the match, fans threw stones, two of which hit a window and broke the glass. Nobody was hurt.

Dal scam: Orissa HC issues notice to state govt

Cuttack, March 05: The Orissa High Court today directed the state government to file an affidavit within two days detailing steps taken to replace stocks of rotten pulses in Anganwadis and for supply of mid-day meal to school children.

A division bench comprising of Chief Justice V Gopal Gowda and Justice B N Mohapatra granted two days time to state advocate general Ashok Mohanty to come with concrete proposal as to how good quality pulses would be supplied to all 9,543 Anganwadi centers of the state.

Police charge company with child labour

Udaipur, March 05: The Rajasthan Police Friday filed a case against a private firm here for allegedly forcing three minors, including a 12-year child, to work, an official said.

Around 56 labourers working at the company had complained to the district magistrate against alleged inhuman working conditions at the workplace. The authorities Thursday raided the place and released the workers, he said.

Three Maoists surrender in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, March 05: Three Maoists, two of them minors, Friday surrendered to the police in Orissa’s Keonjhar district, an officer said.

Sadhu Mahakud (16), Mahendra (15) and Sangit (38) were members of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist, Superintendent of Police Ashish Kumar Singh told IANS.

They handed two crude firearms, important documents and Rs.50,000 cash, he said.

All the three were wanted for several crimes, including blowing up a police station, burning and ransacking liquor shops, attacking police and villagers, and damaging private and government vehicles.

London, March 05: British actress Gemma Arterton says she doesn’t like to go overboard with cosmetics as she likes the natural look.

Mumbai, March 05: People of normal weight are far less likely to die from any cause compared to individuals who were overweight or obese, says a recent study on more than a million Asians.

The research, conducted as part of the Asia Cohort Consortium, included health status and mortality information on more than 1.1 million individuals from east and south Asia.

Clinton renews appeal to Iran on missing FBI agent

Washington, March 05: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is renewing US appeals to Iran for information about a retired FBI agent who vanished four years ago on the Iranian island of Kish, as evidence has surfaced that he is still alive and being held.

A day after revealing recent indications that Robert Levinson is alive and being held somewhere in southwest Asia, Clinton told reporters Friday that the Obama administration is doing everything it can to bring him home.

On Thursday, that Levinson’s family received proof late last year that he was alive.

37 killed in Libya as Qaddafi forces battle rebels

Tripoli, March 05: Muammar Qaddafi’s regime struck back at its opponents Friday, launching a powerful attack on the closest opposition-held city to Tripoli and firing tear gas and live ammunition to smother new protests in the capital. At least 37 people died in fighting and in an explosion at an ammunitions depot in Libya’s rebellious east.

Imams seek overthrow of Qaddafi

Riyadh, March 05: Imams in mosques across the Kingdom on Friday led prayers for the Libyan people and in sermons called for the overthrow of Muammar Qaddafi.

In Jeddah, the imam of Sheikh Ahmad Salah Jamjoum Mosque in Rawdah district fervently prayed to God to destroy Qaddafi describing him as a “bloodthirsty dictator.”

In Sahafa street, the imam of a mosque called on the Libyan people to rise and fight Qaddafi whom he called a criminal and an enemy of Islam. He said he was the worst leader in the world. Those who had been killed by Qaddafi’s forces were martyrs, he said.

Congress mourns Arjun Singh’s death

New Delhi, March 05: The Congress Friday mourned the death of veteran party leader Arjun Singh, terming it a big blow to the nation.

“It’s a big setback to national politics and the Congress party. He was a sincere politician and qualifies as a statesman,” party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.

Singh, a former union minister, chief minister and governor, who made a strong bid to become prime minister in the mid-1990s, died of cardiac arrest in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Friday evening.

Courts will have to adopt pro-active role: Bhagwat

Mumbai, March 05: Lamenting growing corruption, the RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat today said courts will have to take a proactive role to set things right.

“Courts have to speak out… till then nobody bothers,” he said in an apparent reference to Supreme Court’s orders in CVC Thomas case, 2G spectrum scam, etc.

He also regretted that the image of politicians has been sullied in the recent years.

Three injured in fire near Bandra railway station

Mumbai, March 05: A major fire broke out in a slum near the Bandra railway station here today injuring three people, rendering hundreds homeless and disrupting train services.

“The fire broke out at Garibnagar in Bandra East at around 8 pm, following which 26 fire engines and 16 jumbo water tankers were rushed to the spot,” a fire official said.

Two firemen and a local was injured while dozing off the fire, the official added.

“Trains on Harbour Line were stopped between 9.30 pm to 11.30 pm ,” said Western Railway PRO, Sharad Chandrayan.

Hyderabad, March 05: Kiran Kumar Reddy friday completed his first 100 days in office as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister.

The Congress high command overnight replaced K Rosaiah with Kiran Kumar as Chief Minister on November 25 last year in the wake of a deepening crisis within the party. He was supposed to be the ruling Congress’ trouble-shooter at a time when the party was faced with rebellion from former MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and the turmoil over the statehood issue.
