Heavy clashes flare up in I. Coast

Ivory Coast, March 07: Heavy fighting has erupted between security forces loyal to Ivory Coast’s incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and supporters of president-elect Alassane Ouattara.

Clashes happened in the western town of Toulepleu on Sunday and New Forces, an ex-rebel group loyal to Ouattara, took the control of the town, AFP reported.

“There has been bitter fighting at Toulepleu. The New Forces have taken the town,” a local politician affiliated with the government said.

Mexico’s drug violence leaves 6 dead

Mexico, March 07: At least six people have been killed in separate drug-related attacks in northern Mexico, including three at a bar near the US consulate in Ciudad Juarez, officials say.

The three were killed on Sunday after gunmen opened fire on customers at the Muro bar near the consulate in Ciudad Juarez across the border from El Paso in the southern US state of Texas, the Associated Press quoted spokesman for Chihuahua state prosecutors Julio Castaneda as saying.

Israel OKs al-Aqsa construction project

Jerusalem, March 07: Israel has given the green light for the resumption of the construction work on an access ramp to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The East al-Quds (Jerusalem) municipality said on Sunday that the building of the ramp to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound was given the go ahead last week, AFP reported.

It is meant to replace a provisional wooden version.

Work on the controversial ramp was suspended four years ago following a wave of protests across the Muslim world. Muslim authorities also demanded an end to Israel’s provocative excavations near the site.

S Pars gas production at record high

Pars, March 07: The monthly production of South Pars gas field has hit a record high of 7.280 billion cubic meters from January 21 to February 20.

The production manager of Pars Oil and Gas Company told IRIB on Sunday that the monthly gas production of the joint field passed 7.2 billion cubic meters in the Iranian month of Bahman, marking a record since the exploitation of the field nine years ago.

Oman Air staff strike for higher wages

Oman, March 07: Around 200 staff of Oman Air, the flag carrier of the Arab state, have staged a strike to demand higher salaries and better working conditions.

They gathered at the airline’s headquarters, located near the country’s main international airport in the capital, Muscat, for around two hours and threatened to continue their walkout action, Bloomberg reported late Sunday.

The protest has dragged one of the sultanate’s most prominent companies into the unrest that has shaken the strategically important Persian Gulf state.

Zob Ahan, Teraktorsazi tie scoreless

Tehran, March 07: The league leader Zob Ahan has been held to a goalless draw against Teraktorsazi in the 25th week of the Iran Premier League (IPL).

Zob Ahan shared points with the popular Tabriz-based club at Isfahan’s Fouladshahr Stadium on Sunday.

The first half was boring with scanty attacks from both sides which turned out in vain. Nothing changed in the second half other than numerous fouls committed by both teams.

Ghasem Haddadifar of Zob Ahan was sent off for the second bookable offense after a foul on Andranik Teymourian just three minutes before the final whistle.

6.2-magnitude earthquake rattles Chile

Chile, March 07: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has jolted northern Chile, forcing people to rush out of their homes and offices in panic, authorities say.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake rattled the town of Putre, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) from the port of Arica, near the border with Peru, the Associated Press reported on Sunday.

The report says that the epicenter of the quake was 87 kilometers under ground. It struck at 9:32 a.m. local time (1232 GMT), and centered 93 kilometers east of Tacna, Peru and 1,060 kilometers southeast of Lima.

3 Bangladeshis die in Libya evacuation

Benghazi, March 07: At least three Bangladeshi nationals have died and 11 others have gone missing as they fled from a ship transporting them from Libya to Greece.

The Cypriot-flagged ship was carrying 1,280 evacuees, most of them from Bangladesh, to the island of Crete in Greece on Sunday, AFP reported.

“Forty-nine people left the ship” while it was preparing to dock in Souda Bay. “They used a rope to climb down,” local coast guard chief Antonis Daskalakis said.

EU mission to assess damage in Libya

Brussels, March 07: The European Union (EU) has sent a high-level mission to troubled Libya to assess the needs of the people and monitor evacuation efforts.

The office of the EU foreign affairs chief said Sunday that it will be the first such mission to Libya since the anti-regime protests began Feb 14 against Muammar Gaddafi’s 41-year rule.

The Libyan authorities are fiercely suppressing the riots, and at least 6,000 people have been killed, according to international organisations.

Yuvraj hopes to play key role for India in World Cup

Bangalore, March 07: Star cricketer Yuvraj Singh, who steered India to a comfortable win over Ireland late Sunday with his all-round performance, hoped to play a key role in the upcoming big matches in the ICC World Cup series.

UN chief names special envoy to Libya

United Nations, March 07: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon has appointed former Jordanian foreign minister Abdelilah Al- Khatib as his special envoy to Libya.

A statement issued by Ban’s spokesman said the special envoy is “to undertake urgent consultations with the authorities in Tripoli and in the region on the immediate humanitarian situation as well as the wider dimensions of the crisis”, Xinhua reported.

The north African country has been witnessing riots since Feb 14 when anti-regime protests began against Muammar Gaddafi’s 41-year rule.

Guy Ritchie, girlfriend expecting first child

London, March 07: Filmmaker Guy Ritchie is set to become a father as his girlfriend Jacqui Ainsley is pregnant with their first child together.

Ritchie already has biological 10-year-old son Rocco and adopted five-year-old boy David with ex-wife Madonna – and his model girlfriend Jacqui Ainsley are expecting their first child together in September and the couple is thrilled, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

UK team leaves Libya after ‘difficulties’

Benghazi, March 07: Britian says a “small diplomatic team” has left the Libyan city of Benghazi after trying to contact opposition forces, as rebels there made it clear they had refused to talk to them.

“I can confirm that a small British diplomatic team has been in Benghazi,” Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a statement today.

“The team went to Libya to initiate contacts with the opposition. They experienced difficulties, which have now been satisfactorily resolved. They have now left Libya.”

Spanish man arrested over child porn scam

Spain, March 07: Spanish police have arrested a young man in the south of the country who allegedly blackmailed underage internet users in a nude picture scam.

The 20-year-old from the town of Viator near Almeria in Andalusia reportedly told users of Internet fora he was a hacker who would publish their photos on porn sites unless they sent him nude pictures or stripped in front of a webcam.

Police did not reveal his identity but said they seized “976 videos featuring minors stripping” and a large number of CDs and DVDs with naked and half-naked minors.

Suspected al-Qaeda gunmen kill 4 in Yemen

Sanaa, March 07: Suspected al-Qaeda gunmen killed four soldiers from Yemen’s elite Republican Guard in an attack east of the capital Sanaa on Sunday, a local official said.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the soldiers as they passed in a truck near Marib, about 170km east of Sanaa, the official said.

“The attack was similar to others by al-Qaeda,” he added.

On February 22, five people, including three soldiers, were killed in a gunfight with al-Qaeda militants in Marib, the defence ministry said.

Special US prison units fill with Muslims

Washington, March 07: US Federal prisons for the past three years have housed special units filled disproportionately with Muslim inmates whose every communication with the outside world is strictly monitored.

Known as “Guantanamo North”, the so-called Communication Management Units (CMU) were secretly opened in 2007 in maximum-security prisons in Terre Haute, Indiana, and Marion, Illinois, and currently have 71 prisoners.

France’s ex-president to go on trial

Paris, March 07: Former French President Jacques Chirac is set to face corruption charges over his alleged misuse of public funds for political gains when he was mayor of Paris.

Chirac, who is expected to go on trial on Monday, has been under criminal investigation over his alleged involvement in exploiting public finances to pay ghost workers’ salaries to his political allies from 1977 to 1995 as the powerful mayor of Paris and leader of the Gaullist Party, AFP reported on Sunday.

Mubarak’s thugs attack activists

Cairo, March 07: Some members of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s National Democratic Party have attacked pro-Palestinian activists who are marching toward the Gaza Strip.

The members of the ex-ruling party attacked the activists on Sunday in El Arish, about 50 kilometers from Rafah, Media correspondent Roshan Muhammed Salih reported.

The activists, including Egyptian and foreign nationals, were attacked as they were trying to persuade Egyptian volunteers to join them in a march to the Rafah border crossing which remains partially closed.

Estonia’s center-right govt. wins poll

Tallinn, March 07: Estonia’s center-right coalition government has secured a victory in the general elections, setting the stage for continuation of the economic recovery.

According to official figures, the two-party coalition led by Prime Minister Andrus Ansip managed to secure 56 seats in the 101-member parliament, compared with 45 seats for two center-left opposition parties, AFP reported on Sunday.

The election commission said Ansip’s Reform Party and its conservative partner, the Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica (IRL), gained 56 seats combined.

Lebanese urge end to Taif Agreement

Beirut, March 07: Thousands of Lebanese people have held a rally to protest the country’s current political system, calling for scraping the Taif Agreement.

The Lebanese demonstrators gathered in the capital city of Beirut on Sunday and urged that the majority should have a final and direct say in the government make-up, AFP reported.

Sunday’s protest came after another demonstration last week, when hundreds of people braved heavy rain and marched on the state courthouse.

The Taif Agreement ended the 15-year civil war in 1990 that killed 150,000 people.

Iran, Kenya to strengthen trade ties

Tehran, March 07: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and visiting Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga have pledged to deepen trade relations between the two countries.

Ahmadinejad, in a meeting with Odinga in Tehran on Sunday, called for more economic and banking ties between Tehran and Nairobi, noting that there is much room for expanding bilateral relations.

Odinga, for his part, said that his country is keen to strengthen ties with the Islamic Republic, noting that the two states have reached a common ground to this end.

Gaddafi forces fire on Tripoli protesters

Tripoli, March 07: Forces loyal to Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi have opened fire on anti-regime protesters in Fashloum, an eastern district in the capital, Tripoli.

Protests against Gaddafi’s 42-year authoritarian regime in Fashloum are triggered by the absolute poverty of residents in this area.

Tripoli, Gaddafi’s stronghold and one of the few cities under government’s control, has seen a harsher clampdown on protesters because of heavy presence of security forces.
