DGCA probing near-miss at Patna airport

New Delhi, March 29: Aviation regulator DGCA is probing a “near-miss” incident between two aircraft, with at total of over 300 people on board, at the Patna airport last week.

A major accident was averted when the pilot of a Kingfisher Airlines’ A-320 aircraft, which was cleared for landing at the Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport on Friday evening, saw an IndiGo A-320 on the runway and executed a ‘go-around’.

The two aircraft, which were reportedly carrying a total of 336 passengers, were given clearance by the Air Traffic Control.

Ambala DC escapes unhurt in car accident

Ambala, March 29: Ambala Deputy Commissioner today escaped unhurt when his car met with an accident on GT road near here, police said.

DC Samir Pal Saro was en route to Ambala Cant in a car to receive Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was visiting the city to attend a school function. When the vehicle was crossing SP (Railway) office, a mini truck rammed into the car, police said.

Though Saro and the driver escaped unhurt, the front gate of the car was damaged badly.

Case against Kerala minister for ‘slapping’ voter

Kollam, March 29: CPI leader and Kerala Food Minister C Divakaran, seeking re-election from Karunagappally Assembly segment, today landed in trouble with police registering a case against him for allegedly slapping a voter.

Divakaran, however, denied the charge saying that it was a “cooked-up story”.

In his complaint, one Sudhakaran alleged that the minister slapped him while canvassing votes at Karunagappally Railway Station after he told him that he would not vote for LDF as he was a UDF supporter.

New Delhi, March 29: India will provide assistance of $1 million to Myanmar for relief and rehabilitation in the areas affected by last week’s earthquake.

Last week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a message to Senior General Than Shwe, chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of Myanmar, mourned the loss of lives.

The prime minister offered help in the rescue and relief efforts for the earthquake which hit the country March 24.

Tributes paid to freedom fighter Laxman Nayak

Berhampur (Orissa), March 29: Rich tributes were paid to noted tribal freedom fighter Laxman Nayak at the Berhampur Circle jail here on occasion of his martyrdom today.

Nayak was hanged to death at the jail on March 29, 1943.

He was born in November 22, 1899 in a remote village in Malkanagiri district and was instrumental in spreading the message of Mahatma Gandhi among tribals of southern Orissa during the national movement.

At least 22 members of Sahid Tirath Yatri came from Balasore and Bhadrak districts to pay their tribute to the freedom fighter.

Egyptian national robbed in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, March 29: A tourist from Egypt has been allegedly robbed and injured by some unidentified miscreants here, police said today.

Farukh was allegedly robbed of Rs 12,000 and a bag at knife-point by some unidentified goons late last night at a posh colony, authorities said, adding, they escaped after injuring the tourist.

He has been admitted to the district hospital.

Willow Smith to perform at kids’ choice awards

London, March 29: Will Smith’s daughter Willow might be only 10-years-old, but she is set to perform at the Nickelodeon 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards, Saturday.

NHRC notice to Haryana police on Faridabad encounter

New Delhi, March 29: The NHRC has sent a notice to the Haryana Police and Faridabad District Magistrate seeking explanation for not sending it information about the killing of an alleged criminal in an encounter as per guidelines.

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report alleging that two criminals were killed in an encounter with Crime Branch personnel in Faridabad, it said in a press statement today.

HC upholds life term for the 1993 plane hijacker

New Delhi, March 29: The Delhi High Court today upheld the life sentence awarded to a political activist Hari Singh for hijacking an Indian Airlines flight in March 1993 but asked the government to suitably commute his sentence as he had committed the crime “to make a political point.”

A bench headed by Justice S Ravinder Bhat upheld the life sentence awarded to Singh by a Delhi trial court in August 2001 saying “this court finds no infirmity with the approach or the findings of the trial court. The conviction of the appellant (Hari Singh) has to be sustained.”

Syrian unrest: Cabinet resigns, Assad to address nation

Damascus, March 29: Syrian state-run television says the Cabinet has resigned as the country sees the worst unrest in decades.

President Bashar Assad accepted the Cabinet’s resignation following a meeting Tuesday.

The resignation is the latest concession by the government aimed at appeasing more than a week of mass protests.

Assad is expected to address the nation in the next 24 hours to announce he is lifting the emergency law and moving to annul other harsh restrictions on civil liberties and political freedoms.

Special non-stop train to Chandigarh for World Cup

New Delhi, March 29: Facing unprecedented rush in Chandigarh-bound trains, Railways have decided to run a special train from here today to clear the surge of passengers due to the semi-final Indo-Pak World Cup cricket match at Mohali tomorrow.

The one-trip special train will run in both the directions in Delhi-Chandigarh section.

The New Delhi-Chandigarh Special train will depart from New Delhi station today at 11.45 pm and reach Chandigarh at 4.15 am tomorrow.

Delhi to host national consultation on smokeless tobacco

New Delhi, March 29: A two-day national consultation will be held here April 4-5 by the ministry of health and family welfare in association with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) to highlight the growing use of tobacco products other than cigarettes.

‘PM should use India trip to resume bilateral series’

Uttar Pradesh plans development of areas bordering Nepal

Lucknow, March 29: The Uttar Pradesh government Tuesday announced a Rs.45-crore package to develop villages and towns within the 10-km of the India-Nepal border.

The decision was taken at a screening committee meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta here Tuesday.

While allocating a fund of Rs.45 crore for the purpose, Gupta declared, “The tasks to be undertaken would include improvement of roads, drainage, drinking water, health and power, among other things.”

Don’t delink terrorism from talks: BJP

New Delhi, March 29: Ahead of the talks between the prime ministers of India and Pakistan Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Tuesday that the government should not delink the issue of terrorism from the bilateral dialogue.

The opposition party also stressed that justice must be ensured for the victims of the 26/11 terror attack.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said here Tuesday that the government should ensure that Pakistan gives enough assurances on the issue of cross-border terrorism before restarting the composite dialogue process between the two countries.

UPA not serious on black money issue: BJP

New Delhi, March 29: The BJP today flagged the issue of Indian black money stashed abroad and alleged that the UPA government was not “earnest and serious” enough on the issue despite Supreme Court interventions in the matter.

“The UPA government is not really firm on this issue. It has presented a very selective list (of those Indians having black money abroad) to the Supreme Court. The government is not being very earnest about this issue. There is no will,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman rued.

Bloody clashes kill over 150 in Somalia

Somalia, March 29: At least 152 people have been killed during heavy clashes between Somali government troops backed by African Union forces and al-Shabab fighters in Mogadishu.

Over 58 Somali soldiers died on Monday after bitter clashes broke out between al-Shabab fighters and the transitional government troops in southern Mogadishu’s northern districts of Bondhere and Juba. Twenty African Union peacekeepers also died in the skirmishes, a Press TV correspondent in Mogadishu reported.

‘US-led airstrikes hit Libya civilians’

Libya, March 29: Western airstrikes have hit civilian areas in the Libyan towns of Garyan and Mizdah, leaving scores of men and women wounded in the cities, reports say.

“Civilian and military areas in Garyan and Mizdah were hit on Monday night by the colonial and crusader aggressors,” Libyan television said in a written news flash.

Garyan lies about 100 kilometers south of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, while Mizdah is about 184 kilometers south of the capital.

Two illegal arms dealers arrested

Mumbai, March 29: An alleged supplier of firearms and his associate have been arrested from suburban Santacruz after they arrived for delivering arms consignment to members of Ravi Pujari gang, Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad said today.

The ATS recovered six pistols and 21 live rounds, brought for delivery, from the duo.

ATS on a tip-off laid a trap on Saturday outside Santacruz railway station when the two accused, Jitendra Sonkar (36) and Mangesh Uke (27), were found moving suspiciously in the area, an ATS official said.

Karunanidhi hints at coalition govt after assembly polls

Chennai, March 29: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today hinted at his party DMK forming a coalition government after the state assembly elections if the situation warrants so.

To a question on the post-poll scenario and if DMK would go in for coalition rule, Karunanidhi said if the ”voting pattern” changed and there was a situation wherein only such a rule was possible, “we will then discuss it with other parties and decide.”

Congess, DMK”s key ally, is learnt to have made a pitch for power-sharing in the event of DMK-led alliance coming back to power.
