Andhra youth gets lifer for killing girl’s parents

Hyderabad, January 31: A youth was Monday sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Andhra Pradesh for murdering a couple and injuring their daughter because she had spurned his advances more than a year back.

A local court in Rajhamundry town sentenced M. Rajesh after holding him guilty of murdering the couple Sep 17, 2009.

Rajesh had stabbed to death N. Srinu, an autorickshaw driver, and his wife N. Satyavathi as they tried to save their 17-year-old daughter Anusha, who was being attacked by Rajesh.

Obama flip-flops on Egypt crisis

Washington, January 31: The Obama administration has begun hardening its tone toward embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak as protests continue to rage in the North African country for the seventh consecutive day.

The White House released a statement on Sunday, which said that US President Barack Obama has discussed Egypt’s uprising in calls to the leaders of the UK, Turkey, Israel and Saudi Arabia, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Flash floods claim 30 lives in Bolivia

Bolivia, January 31: Flash floods in southern Bolivia have swept away a bus-load of people and a truck, claiming lives of at least 30 people as they were trying to cross the Molle-Punku River.

The two vehicles became trapped in muddy waters overnight while trying to cross the raging river. Chuquisaca police chief said 30 bodies have been recovered so far, but more people are feared dead.

Rescue teams and local volunteers are working round-the-clock in the remote area, searching for more victims.

Australia bracing for powerful cyclone

Queensland, January 31: Queensland has closed major coal ports, evacuated tourists from vulnerable resorts and warned of heavy rain ahead of the cyclone due to slam into its coast this week, reported Reuters.

Forecasters said Cyclone Yasi could be generating gales of more than 250 kph when it hits the coast on Wednesday or Thursday, which would put it on a par with Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005.

‘Army must choose Egypt or Mubarak’

Cairo, January 31: Anti-government Egyptian protesters have returned to the streets of the crisis-hit country, calling on the army to choose between Egypt and beleaguered President Hosni Mubarak.

Pouring into Cairo’s Tahrir Square to start the seventh day of protests, the demonstrators on Monday renewed their call for the president’s resignation after 30 years in power.

“The army has to choose between Egypt and Mubarak,” read one banner in Tahrir Square.

Thousands of angry protesters vowed to camp out in central Cairo until they had toppled the regime.

China warns of inflation rise

Beijing, January 31: China’s Central Bank has warned that inflation still runs high in China, while it has launched measures to tighten monetary policies to rein in price bubbles.

“Inflation pressure is quite big,” the central bank said in its fourth-quarter monetary policy report on its website, citing rising capital inflows, labor costs and resource prices as reasons.

China will face a “relatively stable” external environment this year, and the domestic economy is likely to maintain fast growth due to investment momentum and consumer spending, the report also said.

‘Million man march’ called in Cairo

Cairo, January 31: Egyptian protesters, demanding President Hosni Mubarak’s ouster, have called for a “million man march” in the capital city of Cairo amid rising clamor in the North African country.

Organizers said on Monday that they have called for the march on Tuesday to mark one week since the start of the biggest anti-government protests in politically-unstable Egypt in three decades, AFP reported on Monday.

The news came a day after embattled Mubarak gave his armed forces the authority to shoot-to-kill anti-government protesters.

Abid Ali Khan Educational Trust conducts examinations

Hyderabad, January 31: Urdu Dani, Zaban Dani and Urdu Insha exams have been conducted by Abid Ali Khan Educational trust (Siasat daily) on January 30 at 10 to 1 in the morning. Altogether nearly 17000 students appeared in the exams at 6 centres in neighbouring states besides 125 centres in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

132 centres had been setup in the twin cities for the examination conducted yesterday by Abid Ali Khan Educational Trust in which out of 10749 students 5277 appeared for Urdu Dani, 2833 appeared for Zaban Dani and 2639 appeared for Insha.

Pakistani bomber kills 3 policemen

Islamabad, January 31: An explosion in northwestern Pakistan has left three policemen, including a senior officer, dead and injured a dozen people, security officials say.

A bomber attacked the car of police Deputy Superintendent Rashid Khan in Peshawar, the capital city of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday, said Siiraj Ahmad, the district’s top civil administrator.

“Rashid Khan, his guard and driver have died while 13 to 14 people are injured,” Ahmad said.

According to reports, five of the injured are policemen.

Egypt unrest: Mubarak meets army as Obama urges reform

Cairo, January 31: Egyptian protesters turned to the army and to a retired diplomat to maintain momentum in efforts to unseat Hosni Mubarak, but as the president’s Western backers called for change he met the generals who can keep him in power.

The outcome of six days of unrest, which has killed more than 100 people, rocked the Middle East and rattled global investors, hung in the balance. Troops have let Egyptians bellow their rage at Mubarak’s 30 years of autocracy. But the generals have yet to show whether they will keep him on or ease him out.

Pakistan PM declines comment on US man’s arrest

Islamabad, January 31: Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday declined to comment on the arrest of a US man who shot dead two men in Lahore, saying the matter was being probed by courts and regional authorities.

The US embassy has claimed diplomatic immunity on behalf of Raymond Davis, previously described as a consulate employee, who is under investigation on double murder charges after shooting dead two motorcyclists on Thursday.

Telecom Ministry panel submits 2G probe report, names erring officials

New Delhi, January 31: The one-man committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Shivraj V Patil, which was appointed by the Telecom Ministry to look into the lapses in the allocation of 2G spectrum, submitted its report on Monday.

Justice Patil submitted the report to Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal and said he has identified individuals guilty of malpractice in the 2G scam.

The panel was set up on December 13 last year to look into the spectrum allocation procedures and policies during 2001-2009, a period that includes the NDA regime.

Jammu, January 31: Hitting out at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad Sunday accused the saffron outfit of pursuing terror tactics.

“It was an RSS man who killed Gandhiji. RSS is pursuing terror. It was involved in terror plots,” Azad alleged.

Husband commits suicide over wife’s death

Hyderabad, January 31 (Siasat News): A husband who was so upset and lonely after the death of his wife, committed suicide in the jurisdiction Naredmet police station.

35-year-old Janardhan was the resident of Vinayak Nagar in Ranga Reddy district and was a centering labour. On the night of January 26, he poured kerosene on his body and set himself ablaze.

He was immediately shifted to the hospitals by his relatives but he died during the treatment.

New Delhi, January 31 Amid a raging controversy over black money allegedly stashed by stud farm owner Hasan Ali in Swiss banks, Switzerland has said it is awaiting a “complete” request from India for help in this case since 2007.

Switzerland”s Federal Office of Justice (FoJ) had last told Indian authorities in August 2010 to complete their request and the request has not been completed so far, an FoJ spokesperson told PTI.

Afridi hints at limited role for Akhtar in WC

Karachi, January 31: Pakistan one-day captain Shahid Afridi has indicated a limited role for experienced fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar in the remaining matches in New Zealand and next month’s World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Jerusalem, January 31: Israel has called on Western powers to curb their criticism of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak amid the country’s popular uprising, a report says.

Tel Aviv is seeking to convince its allies, that it is in the West’s interest to maintain the stability of the Egyptian regime.

In a special cable sent by the Israeli Foreign Ministry to its embassies in the United States, Canada, China, Russia and several European countries, ambassadors were told to stress to their host countries the importance of maintaining Egypt’s stability.
