APIIC to press criminal charges against Emaar

Hyderabad, January 01: In what seems to be a New Year resolution, the Andhra Pradesh Industrial and Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has decided to take its case against Emaar Properties to its logical conclusion. At its board meeting here on Thursday, APIIC decided to initiate criminal proceedings against the company for defrauding it of an estimated Rs 500 crore.

Governor greets people on New Year

SSC (APOSS) results out

Hyderabad, January 01: Releasing the results of the SSC exams conducted by the Andhra Pradesh Open School Society (APOSS), Minister of Primary Education S Sailajanath said that the results for the open school education have been consistently improving over the last few years.

A total of 4146 students qualified for the SSC (APOSS) exams held in November/ December 2010. The pass percentage for the examination increased from 52.45 % in 2008-2009 to 61.15 % this year.

Widow poisons children, kills self

Hyderabad, January 01: Depressed after her husband’s death and her poor financial condition, a 35-year-old woman committed suicide after giving poison-laced soft drink to her three children at Neredmet yesterday night. One of the children died along with her mother.

Neredmet police said that Jyothi (35), who has been under depression since her husband Srinivas died seven months ago, bought a soft drink for her three children — Meghana (14), Varshita (12), Nanda Kishore (10). But she poisoned it before making them drink it.

4 die in separate road accidents

Hyderabad, January 01: Two persons, including a charted accountant (CA), died when a lorry hit the two-wheeler in which they were travelling near Trimulgherry today.

Trimulgherry police said that Suman (22), a charted accountant, was travelling on the two-wheeler along with her aunty Rajeshwari (30). The victims were on their way to RK Puram from Jeedimetla when the accident took place around 4.p.m. The lorry driver was reportedly taken into police custody.

NRI appeals to abductors to free brother in Bihar

Patna, January 01: Three days after a businessman was abducted in Bihar’s Banka district, his brother based in California in the US appealed to the abductors to free him as police failed to make any breakthrough.

‘I appeal to the abductors to release my brother,’ Sanjeev Kumar said via e-mail to mediapersons Friday night.

He said he has also approached top police officials and the media via telephone for his brother’s safe recovery.

Two soldiers killed by militants in Kashmir

Jammu, January 01: Two soldiers were killed by militants in Gool area in Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir Saturday, an army officer said.

‘The army has launched an operation to trace the militants,’ the officer told IANS on Saturday evening.

Territorial Army personnel had launched an operation against militants in Gool, a mountainous area Saturday but hidden militants opened fire on the approaching soldiers and killed two of them. The slain soldiers have been identified as Mohammad Khalid and Mohammad Shariq.

CNG gets dearer, to cost Rs.29 per kg

New Delhi, January 01: Delhi will have to pay more for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as the rates of the fuel have been revised upward to Rs.29 per kg in the capital with effect from midnight of Jan 1, an official said Saturday.

The price was currently Rs.27.75, an official of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) said.

‘We are constrained to revise the prices of CNG because of increase in overall input cost of gas, its corresponding taxes & duties and marginal increase in operating expenses,’ Rajesh Vedvyas, Managing Director, IGL said.

Chennai, January 01: India has to address three major deficits – governance, regulatory and ethical- if the country has to progress, the economy continue to log nine percent growth and the gains of last two decades are not lost, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Saturday.

‘We were slow to realise that when the economy grows at nine percent it cannot have huge deficits in power, road, shipping and air transport. NTC land in Gujarat fetches Rs.145.93 crore

Gandhinagar, January 01: Hitting a New Year jackpot, the National Textiles Corporation (NTC) has sold through an e-auction two closed mills in Gujarat for a combined price of Rs.145.93 crore ($32.6 million) against a total reserve price of Rs.68.74 crore, a statement said here Saturday.

In a keenly-fought three-day auction that went on nearly till the dawn of the New Year, Ahmedabad Advance Mills Ltd. bagged the coveted 33,222 sq metres plot of New Manekchowk Textile Mills in Ahmedabad for Rs.118.40 crore, nearly 2.5 times the reserve price of Rs 41.27 crore.

Win in Sydney not enough to wash Ashes debacle: Haddin

Sydney, January 01: Australian vice-captain Brad Haddin Saturday admitted that the team’s performance in the ongoing Ashes series will remain unacceptable irrespective of whatever happens in the final Test starting here Monday.

Haddin said the results have been disappointing for the team as well as the fans. Australia are trailing 1-2 in the series against arch-rivals England and have lost the chance to regain the Ashes urn for the third consecutive time.

Night landing cleared at Agra airport

New Delhi, December 01: The union Ministry of Tourism and Culture has cleared night landing of flights at Agra’s Kheria airport, according to an industry source, who also said flights will begin landing at night within a month or two.It has been a long-pending demand of the tourism industry to allow flights, particularly international flights, to land at night in Agra, which is among the most sought after tourism destinations in the country.

The Kheria airport, which is under the Indian Air Force, is currently partially used for civilian flights to the city of the Taj.

Court pulls up Gujarat government on tribes recognition delay

Gandhinagar, January 01: The Gujarat High Court has pulled up the state government for its inaction in recognising the scheduled tribes living in the forest areas of Gir, Alech and Barda. The first bench of the court comprising Chief Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice K.M. Thaker directed the state government to form committees in this regard within a month, according to an order made available Saturday.
