60-year-old woman raped, murdered

New Delhi, January 03: A drink with her husband’s employer on the New Year eve proved costly for a 60-year-old woman in north Delhi when he allegedly murdered her after raping her, police said.

The shocking incident took place in Majnu ka Tila on December 31 evening and Achey Lal (45), who was earlier acquitted in a rape case, was arrested for allegedly raping and murdering the woman, who worked as a maid.

‘Violated’ fundamental rights during Emergency: SC

New Delhi, January 03: The Supreme Court has admitted that it had violated fundamental rights of citizens during the 1975 Emergency. The observation was made by the court which in an unprecedented move commuted to life imprisonment the death sentence, earlier upheld by it, of a man who murdered four members of a family.

A bench of Justices Aftab Alam and Asok Kumar Ganguly in a judgement took a view that the majority decision of a five-member Constitution bench upholding the suspension of fundamental rights during Emergency in the ADM Jabalpur V Shivakant Shukla case (1976) was erroneous.

India to fight terrorism as UNSC member

TRS, BJP not to attend meet on Telangana

Hyderabad, January 03: In a setback to the Centre’s consultation process, the TRS and the BJP have decided not to attend the January 6 meeting in New Delhi to discuss the Justice Srikrishna Committee report on Telangana.

Announcing its decision, the TRS Sunday said, “It was a deliberate attempt to seek divergent opinions on the issue.”

Echoing similar feelings, the BJP also said it will not participate in the meeting called by Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday.

Dozens injured in Australian cinema roof collapse

Sydney, January 03: Thirty-six people were injured when the ceiling of an Australian cinema partially collapsed on Monday after heavy rain, but nobody is believed to be trapped, police said.

Police confirmed that emergency services were at the scene in the regional centre of Bathurst, 175 kilometres (110 miles) west of Sydney, after storm damage caused a false ceiling to collapse.

“Police and other emergency services… located 36 people suffering minor injuries,” New South Wales police said in a statement.

“All persons have been removed from the building.”

Aarushi case: court to examine CBI’s report

Ghaziabad, January 03: A designated CBI court here will take up Monday the closure report filed by the agency in the sensational murder of Aarushi Talwar in which it has named her father as a suspect, but has expressed inability to prosecute him because of insufficient evidence.

The court, before which the agency filed the closure report on December 29, after two-and-a-half-years of investigation, is expected to decide on whether or not the case should be re-investigated.

Sensex starts new year on positive note

Mumbai, January 03: Kicking off the new trading year on a positive note, a benchmark index of Indian equities Monday rose in morning trade.The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 20,621.61 points, was ruling at 20,652.91 points, up 143.82 points or 0.7 percent from its previous close at 20,509.09 points.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the 50-share S&P CNX Nifty was trading at 6,176.8 points, up 0.69 percent.

Karunanidhi meets PM, says alliance is intact

Mayawati suspends rape-accused BSP MLA

Lucknow, January 03: In the wake of sharp criticism by all the major Opposition parties demanding action against a ruling BSP MLA accused of raping a minor and also putting her behind bars on charges of theft, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday suspended Pushottam Narain Dwivedi.

Mayawati had on Saturday ordered a CB-CID inquiry against Dwivedi. If found guilty, Dwivedi will be expelled from the party and sent to jail.

Inflation rate a matter of concern: Pranab

Kolkata, January 03: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Sunday expressed concern over the current rate of inflation but said the figure was expected to come down to 6.5 percent by the end of the next financial year.”The inflation is an issue of concern. We expect that the steps we have taken will bear results. It is expected that by March next year the rate of inflation may come down to 6.5 percent,” Mukherjee told media persons here.

Islamabad, January 03: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Sunday formally announced it was withdrawing support to Pakistan’s ruling coalition over the hike in commodity prices but Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani ruled out any threat to the government.The party’s Coordination Committee held meetings simultaneously in Karachi and London Sunday before arriving at the decision, Geo TV said.

The meetings took serious exception to the massive hike in the prices of petroleum products, among other items, by the government.

Maoists ready for talks if Azad’s killing probed: Agnivesh

Kolkata, January 02: The Maoists are prepared for talks if the central government initiates a judicial probe into the death of rebel leader Azad alias Cherukuri Rajkumar, social activist Swami Agnivesh said here Sunday.

”The Maoists have demanded a judicial inquiry into Azad’s killing. If the central government accepts the demand and begins a probe, then they are ready for talks,” Agnivesh told newspersons.

17-yr-old raped, murdered

New Delhi, January 03: The new year saw another incident of alleged gangrape and murder in the Capital. A 17-year-old girl who went out for a New Year party on Friday was found dead in Dwarka in Southwest Delhi on Saturday. According to police, she had been first strangled with her pair of jeans. Her face had then been
smashed with a stone to make identification difficult. Unconfirmed reports also suggested that the girl was made to have unnatural sex as well.
