Delhi welcomes 2011 with two rapes and a murder

New Delhi, January 03: Only the country’s national Capital — which is also called the ‘rape capital’ — can usher in the New Year in this fashion.

Delhi rung in 2011 with parties, drunk driving — and by showing how unsafe it is for its women. A teenager was possibly gang- raped and then murdered, while an elderly woman was raped and murdered on the last day of 2010. One man was also found murdered.

In the first case, the semi- nude body of the teenager was found in a vacant plot in Dwarka, with a part of her clothing around her neck, possibly used to strangulate her.

Farmer relief package adequate: Rosaiah

Guntur, January 3: Former chief minister Rosaiah on Sunday said that package allotted to rain-hit farmers by the state government is adequate, even while maintaining that the losses suffered by the farmers due to successive natural calamities can never be mitigated.

Sydney Test could be my last, admits Collingwood

Sydney, January 03: Struggling with form in the ongoing Ashes series, England middle-order batsman Paul Collingwood has admitted that the fifth Test in Sydney could be his last.

Collingwood, playing his 67th Test, has made 70 runs in the series. He acknowledged it will be difficult to be in the side if he does not score here.

“My form during this series and most recently my latest failure in the fourth Test in Melbourne means the subject of my Test future was bound to be raised sooner or later,” Collingwood was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph.

Petitioners blamed for rise in pending cases before SHRC

Guntur, January 3: Acting Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission Justice Kakumanu Peda Peri Reddy on Sunday said that the petitioners were partly to be blamed for the rise in number of pending cases since they were not cooperating with the SHRC in disposing off the cases.

Talking to media persons after participating in a programme, Justice Reddy said the petitioners, who have approached the Commission seeking justice, were not providing proper evidence to back their accusations.

Goa college cancels two papers after MBBS exam leak

Panaji, January 03: The Goa Medical College (GMC) has ordered a probe after two MBBS question papers were leaked prior to the exams, forcing their cancellation.

Speaking to IANS Monday, GMC dean V.N. Jindal said the report on the leakage of the Medicine paper I and II for the 100-odd third year students submitted to his office within 48 hours.

“This is a very serious matter. The papers have been cancelled. I am also meeting the Goa University vice chancellor in connection with the leakage,” Jindal said. He also said there was no possibility of all the papers leaking to the students.

Onion prices will dip by mid-January, say traders

New Delhi, January 03: The sky-rocketing prices of onion that have come down marginally are expected to fall further by mid-January, Delhi’s wholesale traders said.

Traders in Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi, Asia’s biggest wholesale vegetable market, said that onion prices are likely to witness a sharp fall by Jan 20 with the arrival of fresh crops.

Israel warships following Asian Aid Ship to Gaza

Bhopal, January 03 (Pervez Bari): Two Israeli warships are following the Asian Aid Ship (Salam) to Gaza (Palestine) via Al-Arish (Egypt), according to Feroz Mithiborewala, organiser of the Indian contingent of the Asian Caravan now in Damascus. The aid ship is carrying aid to be delivered to the Egyptian authorities for checking at Al-Arish before delivery to Gaza through the Rafah checkpoint.

Ahmadinejad removes 14 advisors

Tehran, January 03: Former advisor to the Iranian president on culture and media affairs Mehdi Kalhor has confirmed the termination of his cooperation with the president along with 13 other advisors.

“Yesterday in a decree 13 presidential advisors and I were appreciated for our services and were notified that our cooperation with President Ahmadinejad has ended,” Mehr news agency quoted Kalhor as saying.

In a letter of appreciation, the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad thanked 14 of his advisors for “their compassionate and effective services.”

T-Congress leaders blast SKC members’ remarks

Hyderabad, January 3: The Telangana Congress leaders here on Sunday severely lashed out at the members of the Justice B N Srikrishna Committee stating that they were creating an impression that the outcome of the report would be unfavourable to Telangana State by hobnobbing with those who were totally opposed to bifurcation of the State.

New missile systems join Iran Navy

Tehran, January 03: The Iranian Defense Ministry has delivered new naval cruise missile systems to the Navy in yet another move to boost the nation’s defense capability.

“The systems are capable of spotting and destroying different targets at sea,” said Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi at the delivery ceremony of the missile system on Monday.

General Vahidi pointed out that the systems include launch pads as well as spotting and missile guiding systems.

Bodies fished out three days after accident

Medak, January 3: Three dead bodies were retrieved four days after an accident near Allapur, in Medak district on Sunday.

A lorry speeding on the Gajwel-Toopran road, lost control and plunged into a stream.

The lorry was taken out of the stream with the help of a crane and police found a Tata Indicom car buried under the lorry. They found three dead bodies in the crushed car.

Police are trying to find out identity of the deceased.

Tanzanian commits suicide

Hyderabad, January 3: A Tanzanian student committed suicide in Alwal area on Sunday.

According to inspector Alwal police station Mr. Srinivas Rao, Tanzanian youth Shakeel Hamdoona 25, was studying in Saifabad postgraduate college of Science from the past few years.

He was said to be residing in a rented flat in Alwal and was found dead in his rented residence.

The police was informed when foul smell was coming out of his flat. Police break open the flat’s door and found Shakeel’s body in mutilated condition.

More Hindus in Pak want to migrate to India

Islamabad, January 03: Over 100 Hindu families in Pakistan’s Balochistan province are making efforts to migrate to India after becoming the target of a campaign of kidnappings and extortion, according to a media report today.

The Hindus of southwestern Balochistan have been hit hardest by incidents of abduction for ransom and extortion, with the records of the province’s Home Department showing that a large number of the 291 people abducted last year were Hindus, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.

Dad hires singer to dedicate a song to Lindsay

London, January 03: Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan’s estranged father Michael has commissioned a singer from the Grammy-winning group ALL-4-ONE to write a song dedicated to his troubled daughter.

Delious Kennedy, a member of the group, has revealed that he’s agreed to put pen to paper for a tune he calls “My Rose”, a dance club track about Lindsay.

Michael revealed the song is about a “talented and beautiful young lady who has grown in our hearts, she is badgered by paparazzi, cut down by the media”.

Mumbai, January 03: Fugitive underworld don Chhota Shakeel is helpless. His ailing mother wants to meet him one last time before she dies but he can’t come to India as the security agencies are lying in wait for him, reports DNA.

The report said, according to a telephonic conversation between the don and his mother — it was tapped by the Mumbai crime branch — Shakeel was moved by his mother’s plea but expressed his helplessness.

Hyderabad, January 3: The former MLC, Mr Rehman, has predicted that the rebel Congress leader, Mr Y S Jaganmohan Reddy would be the Chief Minister in 2014 and Gandhi Bhavan, the headquarters of the State Congress party, would have to hang a ‘To-Let’ board.

Several people have come to Mr Jagan’s house to extend support to him. They include those from Visakhapatnam and the YSR Kadapa district.

70 companies of Central forces coming

Hyderabad, January 3: Some 70 companies of paramilitary forces would soon be arriving in the State to further strengthen the security environment, in view of possible repercussions of the Srikrishna committee’s report on Telangana.

There would be 7,000 men in these forces. More men would be deployed in sensitive areas than others. In Hyderabad alone, 20 companies would be deployed.

Newly-wed youth among 11 killed in Anantapur district

Hyderabad, January 3: A newly married youth was among 11 persons died in a ghastly accident in Anantapur district on Saturday. Two others were injured. The accident occurred at Mamillakunta crossroad on the Puttaparti-Kottacheruvu highway.

Somasekhar (21) was married to Dhana Lakshmi two weeks ago. The couple was going to a relative’s house along with friends and relatives in a three-wheeler when the accident occurred. While the groom died on the spot, the bride was in a hospital with serious injuries.

Nepal’s red health workers ask India to free Binayak Sen

Kathmandu, January 03: Condemning an Indian court verdict sentencing renowned rights activist Binayak Sen to life imprisonment on sedition charges, nine health organisations affiliated to the opposition Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) have asked India to free the physician, who has devoted his life to the welfare of tribals.

All the nine organisations under the All Nepal Progressive Health Workers’ Association are related to healthcare in Nepal.
