Goa Home Minister says son not involved in drug trade

Panaji, January 30: Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik today said his son”s name has been unnecessarily dragged into drug trade and he is a victim of mistaken identity.

He said his son Roy Naik has been misunderstood with Roy Fernandes, who is into drug trade. “I have enough evidence to show that one Roy Fernandes was in drug business with the blessings of then (BJP) Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and his MLAs,” Naik told reporters here.

MP Cong stages protest to highlight farmer issues

Bhopal, January 30: Congressmen in Madhya Pradesh led by their President Suresh Pachouri and Acting Leader of Opposition in Assembly Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi today staged a road blockade here after being prevented by authorities from marching to the Raj Bhawan to raise farmers” issues.

A group of Congressmen were on their way to Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum to Governor Rameshwar Thakur on the issue of farmers” suicides in the BJP-ruled state when they were stopped by police from moving forward and a scuffle ensued between them.

20 cr people to be screened for various diseases: Azad

Srinagary, January 30: Around 20 crore people will be diagnosed for various diseases in a soon-to-be launched health care programme by the Centre, touted to be the world”s biggest pilot project in health sector.

“We will launch world”s largest pilot project in health sector in the country. We will soon start screening 20 crore people for various ailments – cancer, diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases in 100 remote and inaccessible districts and in 33 cities in next 14 months period,” Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad told reporters here.

Sydney, January 30: Kim Clijsters won her second straight Grand Slam title and the fourth of her career, struggling early before beating Li Na 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 Saturday in the Australian Open final.

The result ended the outstanding run of Li, who became the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam singles final.

Li appeared to become upset with some of the Chinese spectators in the crowd in the third set, and asked the chair umpire to intervene. She later complained about the flashes from photographers at centre court.

Man arrested for stealing ATM card

Adilabad, January 30: A man, who had stolen ATM card of Mr C.P. Jaiswal, DGM Accounts in Sirpur Paper Mill in Adilabad district and drawn around Rs 6 lakhs from ATM centers of different banks in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, was arrested in Hyderabad while he came here along with his accomplice to commit the offence.

Family assaults Woman for marrying other caste

Lucknow, January 30: A dalit woman was assaulted and her hair clipped off by family members after she married a man from a different caste against their wishes, police said here today.

“20-year-old Savita married a youth from a different caste at a temple on January 26 against the wishes of her family members following which they assaulted her and chopped off her hair,” SP Ram Swaroop said.

Acting on an FIR lodged by Savita, her mother and brother were arrested, he said.

Law College security supervisor booked for molesting 1st yr student

New Delhi, January 30: The security supervisor of a law college here has been booked for molesting a first year student, police said on Saturday.

Amandeep Singh, in his late 30s, is the security supervisor of Army Institute of Law. The victim, a resident of Gurgaon, was staying at the college’s hostel.

“The girl says she had gone to a beauty parlour on January 23. She came back at 8 p.m., missing the 7.30 p.m. deadline to enter the hostel,” police officer Harbans Lal said.

ATM guard shoots self by accident

New Delhi, January 30: A security guard posted outside a bank ATM died after accidentally shooting himself Saturday evening in east Delhi, police said.Lan Je Jeen, 25, who hailed from the northeast, shot himself in the chest at Central Bank’s ATM on Vikas Marg in Laxmi Nagar area.

“Around 5 p.m., a cash van arrived and he along with the other employees entered the ATM enclosure. There he accidentally shot himself,” said a police officer.

He died on way to hospital.

WB mourners clash with Israeli troops

West Bank, January 30: Israeli forces have attacked the funeral ceremony of a Palestinian teenager shot dead by Israeli settlers in the West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron).

Israeli soldiers fired tear gas, sound grenades, and rubber-coated bullets on Saturday to disperse thousands of mourners attending the funeral of Yusef Ikhlil, the Ma’an news agency reported.

The 17-year-old youth died on Friday shortly after he sustained a head injury when he was targeted by Israelis from an illegal settlement north of the city.

Two corpses found in Delhi

New Delhi, January 30: Bodies of two unidentified men were found in central and east Delhi Saturday, police said.In the first incident, body of a man, in his late 20s, carrying a fake identity card of a news channel, was found on the bank of the Yamuna river at Vikas Marg in central Delhi.

The corpse was found by some passers-by at the Yamuna bank at around 10 a.m. “We rushed to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem,” said a police officer.

Police found a identity card with the dead body, which said he was employed at a news channel as a rider.

Vegetables parks to come up in several cities: Pawar

Mumbai, January 30: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol won the best actor and actress award respectively for “My Name Is Khan” at the 56th Filmfare Awards Saturday, which was ruled by small budget movie “Udaan” that bagged as many as eight trophies. Karan Johar walked away with the best director award for “My Name Is Khan”, while Salman Khan starrer “Dabangg” was declared the best film at the gala event, hosted by Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan. 5,000 escape in Egypt prison break

Cairo, January 30: Thousands of inmates have managed to escape from a prison in western Egypt as thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets.

Some 5,000 Egyptian prisoners broke out of a penitentiary in Faiyum Governorate, located about 130 kilometers (81 miles) southwest of Cairo, early on Sunday, DPA reported.

A top official holding the rank of general was killed in the incident.

There are also reports that angry crowds kidnapped another senior defense official, who also holds the rank of general.

10 die in battle for Mogadishu

Mogadishu, January 30: Heavy clashes between Somali government troops backed by African Union forces and al-Shabab fighters have killed 10 people in Mogadishu.

Seven people lost their lives after clashes broke out in Mogadishu’s northern districts of Hodan, Bondhere, and Hawlwadig on Saturday. Five civilians were among the dead.

At least 16 other civilians were also injured, Somalia’s Radio Garowe reported on Saturday.

Ambulance workers in the African country ferried the injured people to local hospitals.
