Dutch freeze contacts with Iran after hanging

Tehran, January 30: The Dutch government froze official contacts with Iran on Saturday to protest the hanging of a Dutch-Iranian woman, the Foreign Ministry said.

Iranian Ambassador Gharib Abadi was informed of the sanctions after he confirmed reports that Zahra Bahrami, 45, was executed in Teheran Saturday.

Iranian state television reported Bahrami was hanged for possessing and selling drugs. The report said that initially Bahrami was arrested for committing ‘security crimes,’ but it did not say what became of that case.

Dubai, January 30: The public transport system in Dubai moved an average daily of 957,000 people in 2010, compared to the 800,000 figure in 2009, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said.

The number is likely to increase with the completion of the remaining Metro stations on the Red Line, and the operation of the Green Line, which will be completed on schedule in August.

Rs 6,000 crore package for slum-free city project

New Delhi, January 30: In a significant move towards a slum-free city plan, the Centre will soon announce Rs 6,000 crore grant for construction of houses under the Rajiv Awas Yojna as a pilot project.

The pilot project envisages construction of over two lakh housing units, with all basic infrastructure across the country. Each unit, estimated to cost about Rs 3 lakh, will consist of two rooms — kitchen, bathroom and a lavatory, along with electricity and water facilities.

Pak scientists discover longest tusk in South Asia

New Delhi, January 30: A team led by Pakistani scientists has discovered a three-million-year-old tusk, the longest in South Asia, which could provide clues about the evolution of elephants in the region.

The eight feet 11 inch long tusk of Anancus sivalensis, a distant cousin of the present day elephants, was found in Tatrot village in the Upper Siwaliks region of northern Pakistan.

Tehran, January 30: Iranian caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says Tehran is closely following events in the revolutionary uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa.

EAMCET-2011 notification on Feb. 10

Hyderabad, January 30: The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has announced that the Engineering Agriculture and Medicine Common Entrance Test 2011 (EAMCET 2011) notification will be released on February 10. A decision to this effect was taken at the EAMCET Committee meeting held on Saturday. However, the exam will be held on May 8th. The applications will be received from February 14th to March 16th. The hall tickets will be issued from April 8th. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) will conduct EAMCET 2011.

London, January 30: Women in Britain spend more cash on their looks than on their health and fitness.The average bill for hair products, make-up and fake tan, in a bid to look young, comes up to 336 pounds ($532) a year. But, just 228 pounds ($360) is spent on vitamins and gym membership, a survey by health group Benenden Healthcare Society has revealed.

The statistics emerged after 3,000 women between ages 18 to 65 were quizzed on attitudes when faced with choosing between image or health, the Daily Express reported.

Vietnam reporter dies after being set on fire

Vietnam, January 30: A reporter at a Vietnamese newspaper has died after an intruder broke into his home, doused him with chemicals and set him on fire while he was sleeping.

The Laborer newspaper says 50-year-old Le Hoang Hung died Saturday at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City after 10 days of treatment for burns covering 20 percent of his body.

His colleague Nguyen Thi Ngoc Mai says Hung covered the southern Mekong Delta for the newspaper for nearly 10 years. She says the attack could be revenge for his reporting.

Police are investigating the case.

SHO, head constable suspended

Jaipur, January 30: An SHO and a head constable

were suspended here today for allegedly attempting to sexually harass a girl in the name of interrogating her at Pratap Nagar police station, prompting her to make a failed bid to commit suicide.

The decision to suspend SHO Ramnivas Vishnoi and head constable Lal Chand Meena was taken at a high level meeting tonight chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, official sources said.

Jaipur, January 30: Mega Lok Adalats were organised in all the 34 districts across the state today by Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority in a bid to resolve disputes amicably and to bring an end to the multiplicity of litigation.

According to the figures supplied by RSLSA 51,262 cases of civil, revenue, matrimonial disputes and criminal nature were placed for the disposal before the Mega Lok Adalats.

Washington, January 30: Women trying to have a baby after 35 years are six times more likely to face complications than at 25 years, says a new study.

A major study from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, warning of serious complications for both mother and baby, said that by the age of 40, a woman is more likely to have a miscarriage than give birth, the Daily Mail reports.
