73 GOs issued to withdraw 200 cases

Hyderabad, December 29: The state government issued 73 orders on Tuesday, withdrawing about 200 cases registered against more than 600 students who participated in the Telangana agitations.

The government orders are part of a series being issued for withdrawal of 565 criminal cases registered against 2,436 students and protestors.

The orders were issued withdrawing cases against students in various police stations in districts of Karimnagar, Medak, Adilabad, Warangal, East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Guntur, Khammam, and Anantapur.

Telangana: 135 more cases withdrawn

Hyderabad, December 29: In what appears to be an orchestrated move, Congress MPs from the Telangana region, true to their word, launched a hunger strike here on Monday morning demanding rollback of cases booked against students who had taken part in protests both for and against a separate State of Telangana. The State government conceded their demand partly by withdrawing an additional 135 cases within hours after the MPs’ set up their protest camp.

Their sudden decision to go on a fast is being perceived as a well thought out strategy, a brainchild, of the Congress leadership itself.

TDP expects a turnout of one lakh at Rytu Kosam

Hyderabad, December 29: The city police are making plans to pick up students and suspected trouble-mongers ahead of the submission of the Srikrishna panel report on Dec 31. Many battalions of central security forces have already arrived in the city.

Arrest warrant against Srikalahasti temple EO

Tirupati, December 29: THE High Court issued an arrest warrant against Srikalahasteeswara Swamy temple executive officer Sriramachandra Murty for failing to appear in the court on Tuesday.

According to sources, some individuals, who had donated money to the temple for a diamond-studded crown, approached the court when the officer failed to give them a receipt for their donations. The court had summoned the officer to appear before it on Tuesday. But as he failed to do so, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.

”Higher courts should review Sen’s sentence’

Hyderabad, December 29: Higher courts should quickly step in to review the life imprisonment sentence given to rights activist Binayak Sen on charges of sedition, and carry out a trial which is of much higher standard, the Lok Satta Party has demanded.

Khammam, December 29: Crop loss and debts claimed five more lives in the state today _ four in Khammam district and one in Karimnagar district.

S Satyanarayana (52), a resident of Vedanthapuram in Aswapuram mandal in Khammam district raised tobacco in 12 acres and paddy in five acres.

The untimely rains damaged his crops. He was mentally upset and died due to cardiac arrest on his fields today. He is survived by wife and three daughters.

Be ready to quit Congress: KCR’s call to MPs

Hyderabad, December 29: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrasekhar Rao today called upon the Congress MPs to quit if the Centre does not deliver a Telangana state after the Srikrishna Committee submits its report.

Addressing the RTC employees’ Joint Action Committee and party workers at separate meetings at Telangana Bhavan here today, the TRS chief said it was heartening to note that the Congress MPs, by going on fast, had forced the state government to lift all cases against students.

Telangana: report to be submitted by Friday

Five Kerala schools get infotech upgrade

Thiruvananthapuram, December 29: Five government schools in Kerala have been designated as ‘smart schools’ and will receive Rs.1.25 crore each to install multimedia projectors, wireless internet and other infrastructure, an official said Wednesday.

Called the ‘ICT in Schools Scheme’, the project is an initiative of IT@School, the technology arm of the general education department of the Kerala government. It aims at empowering schools with latest information and communications technology (ICT) enabled education, besides implementing e-governance within the education department.

Haryana to introduce computer education in state colleges

Chandigarh, December 29: All government colleges in Haryana will run computer education courses to prepare youth from the state for the information technology (IT) industry, a senior official of the state’s higher education department said Wednesday.

‘Haryana’s Department of Higher Education has planned to introduce computer education in 67 government colleges of the state to provide employment opportunities,’ director general of higher education Dheera Khandelwal said here.

5,000 initiated into Tibetan Buddhism at Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya, December 29: More than 5,000 people from across the globe sought refuge in the compassionate light of Gautam Buddha in a six-hour initiation ceremony conducted by one of the oldest schools of Tibetan Buddhism, Karma Kagyu sect, at Bodh Gaya Wednesday.

Trinley Thayle Dorje, the 17th Karmapa of the Karma Kagyu sect, conducted the initiation rite which inducted new devotees at the Karma Kagyu Vajrayana monastery in the high seat of Buddhism.

Snappping of connectors caused launch failure: Scientist

Chennai, December 29: The snapping of around 10 connectors between the second and third stage of the Indian rocket GSLV led to the failure of the communication satellite mission, according to an Indian scientist.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist denied that Saturday’s failure was caused by the 90-kg increase in the satellite’s weight or the marginal increase in the overall rocket’s weight.

New Delhi, December 29: Former national champion and coach Vimal Kumar will contest for the post of Badminton Association of India (BAI) president if a re-election is held as per the sports ministry’s instructions.

The ministry has taken up cudgels against BAI president V.K.Verma, who was re-elected for a fourth term in June, which was in ‘violation’ of the government’s guidelines of a maximum tenure of three years for office bearers.

The ministry has already asked BAI to amend its constitution and hold fresh elections to avoid getting de-recognised.
