MFI scam: Credit Bureau to check loan records

Hyderabad, November 02: In a bid to restrain multiple Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) from granting loans to the same set of borrowers, the state government is setting up a Credit Bureau containing records of all borrowers across the state.

“It will include combined data provided by MFIs and SHGs and will serve as an effective tool to counter multiple lending,” R Subrahmanyam, principal secretary, rural development, told Express.

No handcuffing of Viqar, rules court

Hyderabad, November 02: A request by the city police to handcuff terror suspect Viquaruddin Ahmed, citing his erratic nature and chances of escaping from the custody while being brought for trial, was rejected by the Nampally criminal court.

Dismissing the petition filed by the police recently, the magistrate said it was not maintainable as per the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Prison Act.

“No prisoner shall be brought to court handcuffed,” the judge ruled.

Hike in airport user fees from Nov 8

Hyderabad, November 02: The increase in the airport user development fee (UDF) will come into effect on November 8, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), which operates the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad near here, has said.

Every domestic air passenger travelling from the Shamshabad airport will have to shell out Rs 430 (inclusive of taxes) instead of Rs 380 levied as UDF. The outbound international passengers have to cough up Rs 1,875, which is inclusive of taxes, as opposed to Rs 1,000 being charged currently.

Andhra faces cyclone threat, 16 killed in rains

Hyderabad, November 02: The threat of a cyclonic storm looms large over Andhra Pradesh while heavy rains in the coastal region have claimed 16 lives and damaged crops in over 100,000 hectares, officials said Tuesday.

Dozens of villages and residential areas in several towns remained inundated as rains caused havoc in north and south coastal districts.

Over 26,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas in four districts while the authorities alerted the armed forces for possible deployment.

We will reply to green ministry on Polavaram project: Rosaiah

Hyderabad, November 02: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Tuesday said the state would send an appropriate reply to the union environment and forests ministry which has sought an explanation for starting work on the controversial Polavaram irrigation project.

The ministry questioned the government for beginning the work without holding public hearing in the neighbouring states of Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

New Delhi, November 02: Sweeping aside the raging controversies over scam in a Mumbai housing project and the Commonwealth Games, the Congress today directed all its firepower against RSS accusing it of involved in terror acts and the BJP on the Babri Masjid demolition issue.

At a day-long session of the AICC, which ratified the election of Sonia Gandhi as Congress President, leaders including Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee avoided any mention of the two scams in their speeches.

The actor who stars along with girlfriend Kareena Kapoor in the movie, is busy preparing for the Mumbai schedule after completing a grueling two month shoot in Latvia.

“The landscape in Latvia is exceptionally breath taking. We shot in many different locations across the different cities. We got access to some heritage structures, like old ruins, churches and museums. We tried to cover as much variety as the landscape offers,” director Sriram Raghavan said.

BCCI yet to pay me for my services to IPL: Gavaskar

New Delhi, November 02: Omitted from the IPL Governing Council, a disgruntled Sunil Gavaskar has said that BCCI, the promoters of the Twenty20 League, has not paid him a single penny for his services.

In a major revamp, the BCCI left out the former Indian captain from the Twenty20 League’s Governing Council at its Annual General Meeting in September.

The Cricket Board did not give any reason for Gavaskar’s ouster, but there were reports that it could be a result of a payment dispute.

Court dismisses Madhuri Gupta’s bail plea for third time

New Delhi, November 02: A Delhi court today dismissed a bail plea of disgraced diplomat Madhuri Gupta for the third time but allowed her application seeking a copy of electronic communications she allegedly exchanged with her handlers in Pakistan during her stint there.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav refused to grant relief of bail to Gupta allowing a plea of the Delhi Police that she was capable for “threatening” the witnesses.

Maoists call 24-hour Bharat Bandh to protest Obama visit

Kolkata, November 02: Maoists called for a 24-hour nationwide shutdown on November 8 to protest against the visit of US President Barack Obama.

“The Maoist Central Committee will observe a 24-hour Bharat Bandh on November 8,” Maoist Central Committee member Kishenji said PTI over the phone from an undisclosed location.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi were out to sell the country to American imperialism and Obama’s visit to the country was just another step in the process, Kishenji alleged.

Rupee gains 10 paise to 44.37/38 against US dollar

Mumbai, November 02: The Indian rupee gained 10 paise to 44.37/38 against the US dollar today on selling by banks and exporters amid weakness of the American currency overseas.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange, the local currency opened stable at its overnight closing level of 44.47/48 a dollar.

Later, it moved in a range between 44.34 and 44.49 before settling at 44.37/38 a dollar.

According to a forex dealer, dollar selling by some banks and exporters on the back of a weak dollar overseas helped the rupee rise.

SC ruling on dental students’ right to practise in India

New Delhi, November 02: Dental students from colleges established abroad who are awarded degrees by authorities in India can practise in the country without undergoing any screening test unlike others passing out of foreign universities, the Supreme Court has ruled.

Interpreting the Dental Council of India Screening Test Regulations 2009 rules, the apex court said the provision which mandates conduct of a screening test to students from foreign universities intending to practise in India would not apply if the degree is awarded by authorities in India.

Only poor can take India ahead: Rahul Gandhi at AICC

New Delhi, Novemember 02: After getting a pat from the Congress top brass, Rahul Gandhi today took the floor at the AICC session and spoke of how only the poor can be the driving force to take the country forward.

Rahul also made a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s economic policies.

“If we have to bring forward the poor people of this country we have to work like PM who is giving economic growth to this country that’s what we need.”

BJP calls Jammu bandh next week

Srinagar, November 02: The BJP today called for a shutdown in Jammu next Monday to protest Chief Minister Omar Abdullah”s recent remarks in the Legislative Assembly and also what it said discrimination of the region by the government. “The bandh has been called to protest Chief Minister”s remarks that the state had only acceded with the Union of India and not merged with it,” state BJP chief Shamsher Singh Manhas told reporters here.

Two RJD workers killed, 17 injured in road mishap

Bhabhua, November 02: Two RJD workers were killed and 17 others injured when a jeep collied with another near Katarakala in Bihar”s Kaimur district today, police said. The victims were coming in the jeep to Bhabhua for attending an election meeting after filing of nomination by the RJD nominee for Ramgarh assembly seat, Ambika Yadav, when it collided with another, they said.

The injured were admitted to a government hospital at Mohania where condition of five of them was stated to be critical, police said.

US drone crashes in Afghanistan

Kabul, November 02: The drone came down in Behsud district in eastern Nangarhar province early on Tuesday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Officials say the drone crashed due to technical problems. The Taliban have not made any remarks in this regard.

The militants claim that they have shot down several NATO helicopters and drone aircrafts in different parts of Afghanistan over the past months.

The Press TV correspondent said that US-led forces reached the site of the crash and seized the pictures and videos taken by journalists.

Hyderabad is part, heart of Telangana: Nagam

Hyderabad, November 02: Telangana Telugu Desam Forum convener Nagam Janardhan Reddy on Tuesday condemned he remarks, purportedly made by Health Minister Danam Nagender and BC Welfare Minister Mukesh Goud that Hyderabad should be made a Union Territory in the event of the state being bifurcated.

He stated that Hyderabad was the part and heart of Telangana, and without Hyderabad, there was no meaning to Telangana.
