Teachers, students lock up ‘troublesome’ HM

Warrangal, November 02: The headmaster of a girls’ high school in Mulug mandal headquarters was confined in a room by her colleagues and 30 students on the school premises on Monday.

They were protesting against the headmaster’s high-handedness.

On information, police reached the place and released the headmaster.

Mulug police registered cases under Section 109 and 308 of IPC following a complaint by headmaster Sumati.

RBI rate hike may impact growth in short-run: Mukherjee

New Delhi, November 02: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday said the tightening of monetary policy by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to affect near-term growth but will help the economy in the long run.

Tirupati to host meet on Sanatana Dharma

Tirumala, November 02: The third Sanatana Dharma Prachara Sadassu will be held at Tirupati on November 29 and 30.

Record rainfall hits Amalapuram

Hyderabad, November 02: Torrential rain lashed the twin Godavari districts on Monday so much so that Amalapuram recorded 31 cm of rainfall, the highest in Asia in the last 24 hours.

According to Assistant meteorologist S Venkateswara Rao, Amalapuram received the huge amount of rainfall within a day.

The same has been confirmed by The International Meteorological Organisation. Heavy rain also occurred in many places in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema under the influence of the north east monsoon.

There are chances of a low pressure developing over the West Central Bay of Bengal.

‘Rahul asking CM to rein in MFIs ridiculous’

Hyderabad, November 02: Senior TDP leader Yanamala Ramakrishnudu has criticised AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi for urging chief minister K Rosaiah to regulate micro finance Institutions (MFIs) such that they lend loans to SHGs at reasonable rates.

”It is ridiculous that the young MP is asking Rosaiah who had no power at all while leaving his mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and RBI who can in fact deal with the issue,’’ he observed.

Over 25,000 AP students to get scholarship

Hyderabad, November 02: The final list of eligible candidates under ‘Central sector scheme of scholarships for college and university students’ for the year 2009-10 has been sent to the colleges concerned along with renewal applications for the year 2010-11.

More than 25,200 candidates including 12,637 girls have been selected for scholarships under the scheme.

TDP attacks Rahul Gandhi on MFI issue

Hyderabad, November 02: TDP on Monday stepped up its attack on AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi over the microfinance institutions (MFIs) issue, a day after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah sought to defend the Amethi MP.

“Rahul Gandhi heaped praise on microfinance institutions like SKS. Is it because SKS’ profits surged from as low as Rs two crore in 2008 to Rs 174 crore now? Is it for the same reason that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi honoured SKS chief Vikram Akula with the best entrepreneur award?,” TDP politburo member Yanamala Ramakrishnudu questioned.

A platform for political leaders to relax

Hyderabad, November 02: It was a kind of retreat for many politicians. The Alai Balai programme organised by the AP Malala Ikya Vedika at Gandipet here on Sunday provided the platform for politicians to relax a while and abstain from slamming one another on one issue or the other.

But TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao took enough care not cross each other’s path. If Naidu attended the programme in the afternoon, Rao arrived after ensuring that Naidu had left the place.

Of course, both were not inclined to be seen in each other’s company.

APSRTC buses to have GPS facility

Hyderabad, November 02: The APSRTC is going to equip all its buses with the Global Positioning System (GPS) soon.

To begin with, it installed black boxes in five RTC buses on 49 M route on an experimental basis on Friday.

BPO training for Cherlapally prisoners

Hyderabad, November 02: A training course was launched today for prisoners chosen to work in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) unit to be set up at Cherlapally jail soon.

The prisons department officials said 10 prisoners, including engineers and other professionals having computer knowledge, will be trained by Radiant Technologies and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employees.

TCS has provided 10 computers for training. Later, these 10 prisoners will train another 100 prisoners for working in the BPO.

Arrest warrant against actor Pawan Kalyan

Hyderabad, November 02: A munsif court in Wanaparthy, Mahabubnagar district, issued a non-bailable warrant against Telugu film actor and president of Yuva Rajyam, Pawan Kalyan, in a defamation case.

The defamation case was filed against the actor nearly two years back after he allegedly made some comments against Congress leaders.

The petition was filed by Kiran Kumar, an advocate and a Congress leader from Wanaparthy in 2008.

According to the advocate, Pawan Kalyan termed some Congress leaders as traitors in connection with a land dispute near Gandhi Bhavan.

AP to be first in country to produce choppers

Hyderabad, November 02: Andhra Pradesh will soon emerge as the first State in the country to manufacture helicopters as the Tata Advanced Systems Ltd., (TASL) is firming up plans to manufacture helicopters at the Aerospace and Precision Engineering Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Adibatla.

The company is expected to pump in about Rs 10,000 crore for the proposed project in the next 3-4 years.

Celebrations in Andhra, ‘black day’ in Telangana

Hyderabad, November 02: Andhra Pradesh formation day celebrations began Monday morning amid protests in Telangana, where groups fighting for a separate state are observing the anniversary as a “black day”.

Tension prevailed in parts of Telangana as protestors tried to disrupt the official celebrations while dozens of leaders of various parties and their activists were arrested.

Advocates rally for HC bench in Rayalaseema

Kadapa, November 02: Demanding the establishment of High Court bench in Rayalaseema region, hundreds of advocates took out a massive rally in Kadapa town on Monday.

The rally, which commenced at the district court reached Kotireddy Circle where the protestors formed a human chain and later continued the rally uptill the district collectorate and staged a protest there.

Placards and banners were flagged and slogans were raised asking the government to concede to their demand.

Ryots block traffic on Kurnool-Chittoor highway

Kadapa, November 02: Traffic on the busy Kurnool-Chittoor highway was paralysed on Monday following a rasta roko by farmers at Chinnamasupalle demanding minimum support price (MSP) for paddy.

The road blockade, which started at 9 am continued for 90 minutes, resulting in hundreds of vehicles getting stranded on either side of the road.

Speaking on the occasion, Zilla Rytu Sangham president D Chandramouleswar Reddy said reminded that during the last kharif, farmers received Rs 1,400 to Rs 1,500 per quintal of paddy during the last kharif.

Railway employee held for duping

Hyderabad, November 02: A Railway employee, who duped several job aspirants and contractors to a tune of Rs 6 lakh over a period of four years, was on Monday arrested by the city police.

The accused was reportedly using all the money he collected from victims to construct a house for his paramour, police said.

The accused, S Sainath (50), used to work as a railway station master at Jaggaiahpet in Krishna district.

During his tenure then, he reportedly was involved in some financial irregularities and was suspended for few days.

Fresh rumblings at Vanasthalipuram create scare

Hyderabad, November 02: Mysterious blast-like sounds and seismic disturbances continued to cause panic among the residents of the NGOs Colony in Vanasthalipuram on the city outskirts forcing people to run out of their houses.

People came on to the roads fearing an earthquake after they heard mysterious sounds tonight. Inmates of several houses claimed that they felt mild tremors. However, there was no damage to any house or property.

Vigilance Awareness week at NMDC

Hyderabad, November 02: H J Dora, a retired IPS officer and ex-vigilance commissioner, gave a historical perspective of corruption in the world and the importance of honesty and corporate governance in public sector units.
