Hyderabad, November 28: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday extended an olive branch to rebel Member of Parliament Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who is facing mounting criticism due to the anti-party campaign by his TV channel.

Kiran Reddy, who is in New Delhi for discussions with the high command on the constitution of his cabinet, said it was for the party high command to decide on whether to take any disciplinary action against Jagan.

Six killed by militants in Iraq

Baghdad, November 28: Six people have been killed and two more have been injured in shootings and bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital and the north of the country.

A man and his son were killed late on Saturday when an improvised explosive device (IED) attached to their car exploded in the area of al-Darkazliya in eastern Mosul, the capital of the northern province of Nineveh, the Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported.

Gunmen also stormed a shop in the city’s eastern Dorat Sayedati al-Djamila area, shooting the owner to death, security sources said.

Kiran Reddy meets Sonia, PM

New Delhi, November 28: New Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy met Congress president Sonia Gandhi to discuss the political situation in the state. He also called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Reddy consulted Gandhi on the final list of members to be included in the cabinet Sunday, a day before the state assembly begins its session, according to Congress sources.

The chief minister was with Gandhi for 30 minutes at her 10 Janpath residence.

Gang of cyber hackers busted in Delhi

New Delhi, November 28: Three people, including two foreign nationals, were arrested Saturday for duping people into giving their bank account related information and then making unauthorised financial transactions through them, police said.

The accused have been identified as Praveen Gupta, 27, a Nepali national, Promise Eke, 27, a Nigerian, and Tashi Wangchuk, 21, hailing from Sikkim.

Investigations into the case started when it was reported that money from three ICICI bank accounts was being fraudulently transferred.

S Korea, US kick off major naval drills

Seoul, November 28: Large-scale naval maneuvers by the United States and South Korea have started in the Yellow Sea, less than a week after North Korea’s deadly attack on Yeonpyeong Island.

“The drills started around 6 a.m. Sunday (2100 GMT on Saturday) with the USS George Washington joining our warships in the Yellow Sea,” the Yonhap news agency quoted an unnamed official as saying at South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He added that the drills are taking place off the west coast town of Taean.

UAE’s Etisalat chairman named World CEO of 2010

Abu Dhabi, November 28: Mohammed Omran, the CEO of UAE’s telecommunication service provider Etisalat, has been named the World CEO of 2010 at a ceremony in Britain, it was announced Saturday.

He was honoured at the World Communication Awards ceremony in recognition of his outstanding work in the sector.

Etisalat has a market value of 30.8 billion UAE dirhams (about $25 billion) and 100 million subscribers worldwide.

Omran has worked with the company for over three decades and served in different positions till he became the chairman in 2005.

Maliki wants foreign troops out of Iraq

Baghdad, November 28: Iraq’s recently-reinstated prime minister has warned against any extension to the foreign presence on the strife-weary country’s soil.

Nouri al-Maliki, who was mandated earlier in the month to remain premier for another four years, said on Saturday, “I do not feel the need for the presence of any other international forces to help Iraqis control the security situation,” the Associated Press reported.

“The security agreement with what it included of dates and commitments will remain valid,” he said.

Berlusconi calls for rally of support

Rome, November 28: The Italian prime minister has called for a rally of support ahead of a no-confidence vote in parliament, amid widespread protests against his government’s policies.

In a video message to his party on Saturday, Silvio Berlusconi called for a “big, big demonstration and a collection of signatures of support” on December 11 and 12.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators joined members of Italy’s largest labor union on Saturday to protest against the austerity plans proposed by the government.

Principal, 18 teachers of MCD schools suspended

New Delhi, November 28: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi Saturday suspended a principal and 18 regular teachers of its schools while terminating contracts of 14 other teachers for absenteeism and dereliction of duty.

MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said Dharam Veer Singh, the principal of an MCD primary school in east Delhi, was suspended and regular departmental action initiated against him in the latest drive by the civic body to check absenteeism and dereliction of duty.

4 cops guarding Mauritius president suspended

Chandigarh, November 28: Four Haryana policemen were Saturday suspended for laxity while escorting the motorcade of Mauritius President Anerood Jugnauth, who attended a function at Bahadurgarh a day earlier, police said.

Jhajjar district police chief Saurabh Singh told IANS that four policemen, including an inspector, were placed under suspension for negligence while escorting Jugnauth’s Mercedes.

Haryana police sources said that the policemen who were supposed to escort Jugnauth’s car, which was coming from Delhi, started escorting another Mercedes coming from the same direction.

BMW India’s record sales in October

Kolkata, November 28: BMW India, a subsidiary of German luxury car maker BMW, has sold a record 753 cars in October, the company president said here Saturday.

“Last month (October) we had a highest sale of 753 cars which is a record in itself,” BMW India president Andreas Schaaf told media persons on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce.

The luxury car segment in India is growing at a rate of 60 percent annually, Schaaf said.

The BMW chief said his company was hoping to sell between 5,000 to 6,000 cars by the end of the year.

Most of the WikiLeaks cables date from 2004: Report

Washington, November 28: The first details of the illicit publication of US classified diplomatic cables and documents were leaking Saturday on the internet.

The US State Department was bracing for the publication by WikiLeaks of millions of confidential messages and reports sometime in the coming days. Germany’s Der Spiegel, London’s Guardian and the US’s New York Times were expected to simultaneously release their stories and links to the documents in the coming day or so.

Cargo plane crashes in Karachi, 8 dead

Karachi, November 28: A cargo plane crashed near Pakistan’s Karachi airport early Sunday, killing all eight crew members on board, Geo TV reported.

The Russian-made plane IL-76 crashed around 1:45 a.m. and immediately caught fire. The aircraft crashed near Dalmiya road in Gulshan-i-Jamal area which is close to a naval colony and the southern command of Pakistani air force.

Spokesman of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Pervez Jeorge told Dawn TV: “The Sudan-bound plane crashed two minutes after taking off from Karachi terminal. The pilot did not report any fault before the crash.”

6.0-magnitude quake hits Indonesia

Jakarta, November 28: A moderate quake with magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale struck off eastern Indonesia early Sunday, officials said.

The quake occurred at 01:11 a.m. with epicentre at 246 km southeast Melonguane area of North Sulawesi province and with the depth at 10 km under sea bed, Xinhua reported quoting an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

The USGS measured the intensity of the quake as magnitude-5.8 with the depth at 62.8 km under sea bed.

Boris Becker admits getting facelift

London, November 28: Tennis legend Boris Becker is conscious about his looks too, and so he decided to go under the knife to maintain his youthfulness.

The 43-year-old revealed on a TV show that he got a facelift recently, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“It’s a dark arena here (in O2 Arena) so you don’t see my wrinkles. I also had a facelift recently and I coloured my hair, so…I turned 43 this week, and winning Wimbledon was 25 years ago, and I do feel very much like I’m 43 right now,” said Becker when asked about the secret behind his good looks.

Iraq arrests 12 over deadly Baghdad church siege

Baghdad, November 27: Iraq’s interior minister says a group of 12 insurgents suspected to be behind the deadly church siege a month ago has been arrested.

Interior Minister Jawad Bolani says the arrests are a blow to the Al Qaeda network in Iraq.

He told The Associated Press on Saturday that the arrests took place in recent days.

Insurgents took about 120 people hostage in a Baghdad church in October. The deadly siege ended with 68 people dead in an attack that shocked many of Iraq’s already-hardened citizens.

Jerusalem, November 27: The new Israeli settlers are reportedly occupying Arab communities at East al-Quds (Jerusalem) by buying homes in older districts of the occupied city.

Aided by Israeli police, the right-wing Jewish settlers evacuate Palestinian families from their home in East al-Quds.

The Israelis are trying to change demographic structure of the city by tricking Palestinians to sell their homes to them.

‘Iran produces 1bn liters of gasoline’

Tehran, November 27: Iran’s oil minister says more than one billion liters of gasoline has been produced in the country so far, rendering enemy efforts to ban gasoline sales to Iran ineffective.

“We should have imported between 20 and 22 million liters of gasoline on average daily,” Masoud Mirkazemi was quoted by the IRIB as saying.

But the global hegemony went the extra mile to ban gasoline sales to Iran, he added.

That prompted Iran to work intensely to produce gasoline inside the country to meet its domestic demand, he said.

Woman commits suicide along with infant daughter

Lucknow, November 27: Under distress due to poverty, a woman along with her infant daughter allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Khaga area here, police said today.

The unidentified woman, who lived in a makeshift tent in Vijay Nagar locality, jumped in front of the goods train along with her daughter at Khaga railway station.

Police said the woman has left two children behind, who will be sent to an orphanage.

French teacher fired for wearing Hijab

Paris, November 27: A Muslim teacher has been dismissed form work in France for refusing to remove her Islamic Hijab or shaking hands with male colleagues due to her religious beliefs.

The teacher had just started apprenticeship at a primary school in Toulouse.

The school’s disciplinary committee which expelled her says it was defending secularism in public schools.

France is home to the largest Muslim population among the 27 European Union member states. Nearly 10 percent of the 62 million people living in France are Muslim.
