Amarajeevi’s statue set ablaze in Nampally

Hyderabad, October 30: Three days ahead of the AP Formation Day, two miscreants set fire to the statue of Potti Sriramulu on the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University campus at Nampally on Friday evening.

The youngsters poured diesel on the statue, set it on fire and walked out of the campus even as scores of staff and private security personnel remained mute spectators. The statue was partially damaged.

Potti Sriramulu’s fast-unto-death, which led to his death, was instrumental in carving of Andhra Pradesh from the Madras state.

‘FTV ramp walk’ on Tirumala

Tirumala, October 30: Devotees at the Lord Venkateswara shrine here had the shock of their lives on Thursday night when, all of a sudden, the four giant screens showed girls walking the ramp on Fashion TV channel.

The FTV programme went on for a few minutes around 11 pm and then the SVBC channel came alive on the screen.

According to sources in the TTD Broadcasting Section, the faux pas took place when the technical staff were changing the download frequency of Sun Direct which is one of the services that the TTD uses.

High Court gives time to SKS to register

Hyderabad, October 30: A division bench of the AP High Court comprising chief justice Nisar Ahmad Kakru and justice Vilas Afzulpurkar on Friday extended by two weeks time to SKS Micro Finance to make available various details for its registration under the new ordinance.

The bench made the order in an application filed by the micro finance company seeking six weeks’ time to furnish the said details.

State advocate general D V Sitaram Murthy said that certain minimal information must be supplied immediately.

Bhongir civic chief held for taking bribe

Hyderabad, October 30: In yet another big catch, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths today trapped the commissioner of Bhongir municipality when he took a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a contractor.

The commissioner demanded the amount as a ‘reward’ for issuing a cheque to the contractor, ACB officials said.

On a complaint by the contractor, ACB sleuths laid a trap and caught the municipal commissioner, L Baloji, at his residence at Ramanthapur in the city today morning when he accepted the bribe.

Twenty miners were working underground in the mine and about 750 nearby when the fire occurred. Rumours spread that a miner, Shankar, had collapsed after inhaling the gas, spreading panic.

Mumbai, October 30: Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Saturday met Congress party president Sonia Gandhi and offered to resign in connection with his government’s alleged role in the Adarsh Society housing scam.

Placing the onus of Gandhi to take a final decision on the issue, Chavan told media persons here this afternoon that he had presented all the facts connected to the project to the Congress president after she asked him to give a full explanation.

Chavan also said that he would welcome a probe by the Union Defence Ministry.

Lucknow, October 30: Yoga Guru Ramdev on Saturday described as unfortunate Congress leader Rahul Gandhi drawing a parallel between RSS and banned terror outfit SIMI.

“Equating RSS with SIMI is unfortunate,” he told reporters here.

The Yoga Guru said, “Since the inception of RSS, none of its top leaders has been found having any link with terrorism. In fact, the organisation has done a lot for the society in various fields whether education or health.”

He was reacting to Rahul’s remark earlier this month that both RSS and SIMI preached “hardline fundamentalist ideologies.”

Fateh Nagar flyover puts lives in peril

29 aspirants from India die in Haramain Sharifain

Hyderabad, October 30: 29 Indian Hajj aspirants died until yesterday in Haramain Sharifain during current Hajj season. Most of the deceased were aged. The youngest among them was 52 years of age and the oldest one was of 80 years. 15 died in Makkah while 13 in Madina and one breathed his last in Jeddah.

Odean theatre blast: Chargesheet against Zia-ul-Haq

Hyderabad, October 30: National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet against suspected activist of Lashkar-e-Taiba Mohammed Zia-ul-Haq and a Pakistani citizen Abu Rehan alias Wali accused in the Odeon theatre bomb blast case of May 7 2006, in the court of Metropolitan session judge at Nampally.

Both of them were planning to execute an attack on crowded place of Hyderabad when Zia-ul-Haq was arrested on May 3 2010 from Anmol Hotel Kumarwadi while Abu Rehan Wali is still absconding.

210 embrace Islam in two months

Dubai, October 30: The Information Centre of Dar Al Ber Society in Dubai registered conversion of 210 people into Islam in September and October.

Yusuf Al Saeed, manager of the centre, said the new converts included individuals and families of different nationalities. “Their hearts are touched by the tolerance, greatness, mercy and consistency of Islam,” he added.
