Islam now part of Germany: President Wulff

Bremen, October 04: Germany’s President called on his countrymen to work to integrate the country’s four million Muslims, acknowledging that Islam is “now part of Germany”.

Speaking from the northern city of Bremen on the 20th anniversary of reunification and in his first major set-piece speech, Christian Wulff focussed on the challenges ahead of modern, reunited Germany.

In particular, he spoke of the difficulties of integrating its large Muslim population.

Pak weightlifters threaten to quit CWG

Islamabad, October 04: Pakistan’s weightlifting team has threatened to pull out of the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games after a verbal spat with their contingent leader over carrying their national flag at the grand opening ceremony in New Delhi.

Sheikh Rashid, weightlifting team coach, told Dawn from New Delhi that Shujauddin Malik, who is a gold medallist in weightlifting, was to carry the flag and lead the national contingent at the opening ceremony at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.

I like playing grey characters: Emraan Hashmi

Mumbai, October 04: Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi, known for his on-screen kisses, says he enjoys essaying grey characters even as he is trying to be a good father in real life. In his new release, “Crook”, he will be seen playing a dark role.

“I have always played characters with grey shades and I like it. I like a certain realism to the characters I’m playing. In reality too, I always suspect people who claim they have done only good things in their lives,” Emraan, 31, told IANS in an interview.

Beijing, October 03 (Siasat News): It has become a habit of frustrated lot to commit blasphemy of the holy Quran and against Prophet (PBUH).

These blasphemous activities have been done every now and then on local and international level. Many corporate companies join them in committing blasphemy against Islam, Holy Quran and Prophet of Islam (PBUH) and hurting Muslim sentiments, and sell their blasphemous products among Muslims without fear. The Chinese shoe company Maipao has also done the same.

Direct flight from Hyderabad to Chicago via Dubai to be launched

Hyderabad, October 03 (Siasat News): Air India will launch its flight from Hyderabad to Chicago via Dubai by this month end. Airlines sources said that flight service will be launched from October 31, connecting Hyderabad with New Delhi.

Apart from that possibilities are also studied to launch direct service to San Francisco. The airline would be deploying a Boeing 777-300 Extended Range aircraft to operate the flight direct from Delhi.

First permanent artificial heart to 15 year old Boy

Rome, October 04: In a first of its kind, a 15-year-old Italian boy has undergone a permanent artificial heart implant, which is expected to allow him to lead another 20 to 25 years of ‘normal life’.

The unnamed Italian boy, who had to undergo a ten-hour operation to implant the artificial heart last week, was reported to be recovering well and was able to interact with medics at the Bambino Gesu children’s hospital in Rome.

Rahman brings CWG ceremony to electrifying climax

New Delhi, October 04: India’s music sensation A.R. Rahman belted out “Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto” to bring the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony Sunday to an electrifying climax, as the crowds echoed him in equal measure.

Rahman, clad in a white bandhgala jacket, black pants and white shoes, performed the Commonwealth Games 2010 anthem with hundreds of dancers dressed in traditional Indian costumes.

As the spectators joined him, much of the flak the Oscar winning composer has faced for the Rs.500 million Commonwealth Games 2010 anthem seemed to have been washed away.

Emergency landing by Russian plane after bomb threat

Moscow, October 04: A Yak-42 plane with 73 passengers on board flying from Moscow to Chechen capital Grozny was forced to make an emergency landing after a bomb threat, an official said Sunday.

“The plane left Moscow for Grozny at 16.14 p.m. local time. Several minutes later it received an anonymous call threatening that the plane can be exploded,” a spokesman for the Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency said.

“The plane’s crew took a decision to make emergency landing in the city of Volgograd,” he said.

Enrique Iglesias likes going nude

London, October 04: Singer Enrique Iglesias admits that he likes going nude whenever he is with friends.

The “Hero” hitmaker, who has been dating tennis ace Anna Kournikova since 2001, insists he is not embarrassed by nudity.

“I don’t know if I’m cool with it, but I’m not extremely embarrassed. I like making fun of myself. I have five good friends and one of them is an exhibitionist so I think we all follow him,” contactmusic.com quoted him as saying.

Militants burn 20 NATO oil tankers in Pak

Islamabad, October 04: Around 20 NATO oil tankers were destroyed by suspected militants near the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Monday, officials said.

According to preliminary information, militants set on fire the tankers parked on a roadside near Rawalpindi. At least two people were killed during the attack.

On Friday, around 30 NATO oil tankers were destroyed by suspected militants in southern Pakistan. The tankers were on their way to Quetta from Karachi when a group of militants set the tankers on fire at a filling station.

Statue of Tutankhamun’s grandfather found

Cairo, October 04: Egyptian archaeologists have found a 3,000-year-old statue of Amenhotep III, believed to be the grandfather of famous boy pharaoh Tutankhamun.

“The find is fantastic… because of the details of the facial features,” Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities Secretary General Zahi Hawass said.

Scientists had been excavating Amenhotep III funerary temple at Kom al-Hitan when they unearthed the upper half of the red-granite statue of the famous pharaoh’s grandfather.

The statue depicts Amenhotep III sitting down on a throne, accompanied by god Amun.

Blast in Turkey leather factory

Ankara, October 04: At least three people died and five were injured in a blast at a leather factory in Turkey Sunday, a media report said.

Two workers were killed when the blast occurred in the boiler room of the workshop in Guzelburc town in Hatay province, the Anatolia news agency reported, adding that a truck in front of the building caught fire, killing the driver inside.

The fire has been put under control, Xinhua reported.

There was no statement from officials on the cause of the explosion.

US journalists found growing marijuana

Washington, October 04: Two American journalists have been arrested after police found 11 marijuana plants growing in their yard, a media report said.

CBS Radio News correspondent Howard Arenstein, 60, and his wife Orly Katz alias Orly Azoulay, 57, a Washington correspondent for Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, were charged with possession of marijuana with an intent to distribute it, Fox News reported Sunday citing The Washington Post.

Lightning kills five in Sri Lanka

Colombo, October 04: At least five people were killed by lightning and many were missing due to floods triggered by torrential rains in different parts of Sri Lanka, officials said.

Pradeep Kodippily, national co-ordinator of the disaster management centre said five people were killed by lightning in Moneragala, Gampaha and Ratnapura districts during the weekend.

The island has been experiencing heavy rains since Friday, Xinhua reported.

Kodippily said Badulla district’s main highway between Badulla and Haputale was closed Sunday following landslides.

Paraguayan president hospitalised

Paraguay, October 04: Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo, who has lymphatic cancer, was urgently transported from capital city Asuncion to a hospital in Brazil, after doctors detected a blood clot in a vein near his heart, officials said.

The health of the 59-year-old Lugo has, however, improved.

He “woke up without any problems, in good general condition,” Alfredo Boccia, one of the doctors attending the president, said late Sunday.

Man stabbed over baseball game debate

New York, October 04: A baseball fan in the US state of Connecticut was stabbed over an argument with another man over a rivalry between two teams, police said.

Police in Branford, 128 km from New York, were investigating the Saturday night stabbing of a man, reportedly sparked off by an argument over the rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox baseball teams, Fox News reported.

A man named Monte Freire was stabbed at a restaurant around 10.42 p.m. Saturday by John Mayor, 45.

US, allies on global hunt for terror plotters

Washington, October 04: US and allied intelligence agencies are on a near-global manhunt for teams of Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorists thought to be preparing multiple attacks on major European cities, according to US media reports.

US and allied services were examining multiple plots as well as multiple modes of attacks ranging from paramilitary-style raids similar to the 2008 Mumbai attacks to the vehicle bombs that to this day ravage Baghdad, The Washington Times reported Monday citing US counterterrorism officials

‘It’s time Muslims, Hindus resolve Ayodhya issue’

New Delhi, October 04: Hashim Ansari, who was the first Muslim claimant to the 16th century Babri Masjid 61 years ago, took everybody by surprise on Sunday when he took the first step to draw the final curtain on the Ayodhya issue.

Ansari chose to walk down to the residence of Mahant Gyan Das, the head priest of Ayodhya’s oldest Hanuman Garhi temple and the chief of Akhara Parishad, the controlling body of 14 Hindu denominations, including the Nirmohi Akhara.

Rahman adds B’wood flavour to CWG opening ceremony

New Delhi, October 03:Cine stars gave it a miss but the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games had its Bollywood moment with AR Rahman’s ‘Chaiya Chaiya’ enthralling the audience during the ‘Great Indian journey’ segment of the event here tonight.

The journey, a programme organised by the Indian Railways, started with a makeshift train chugging across the stadium with dancers and people from all walk of life thronging the roof, singing and celebrating the true spirit of the Games.

Cheers and jeers for Kalmadi at CWG opening ceremony

New Delhi, October 03: It was both cheers and jeers for Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games, when he made his speech while it was cheers all the way for Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Kalmadi, who has been under attack over alleged corruption and several missed deadlines, received a round of boos when he made his speech at the opening ceremony of the Games.

Kalmadi was followed by Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Fennell, whose references to Dikshit were received by rounds of applause by the audience.

Jagan’s consoling tour continues

Ongole, October 03: Congress MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy continued his ‘Odarpu yatra’ or tour for consoling in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today.

Jagan began his tour from Yedugundlapadu village in the district and consoled the families of a police official, who died along with his father late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in the chopper crash last year and a few others who died of shock after YSR’s death.

The 37-year-old Kadapa MP met the family members of ASC Wesley, the police official, at Miryalapalem village.

Commonwealth Games kicks off in Delhi

New Delhi, October 03: The wait is finally over. The biggest Commonwealth Games so far was inaugurated by Prince Charles and President Pratibha Patil at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi.

An impregnable security blanket of 7,500 personnel, including commandos, has been thrown over the grand Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the venue of today’s opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games.

Bodies of three IAF men found in lake

Hyderabad, October 03: The bodies of three trainee technicians of the Indian Air Force were recovered from a lake on the city’s outskirts Sunday, police said.

The trio from Helicopter Training School of the Air Force Station Hakimpet were drowned Saturday evening during a picnic at Shameerpet Lake.

The dead have been identified as R.S. Badaria, Satyam Chowdary and Manish Tiyagi, all in their mid-20s.

A group of eight technicians had gone to the picnic, which turned tragic when Tiyagi, from Uttar Pradesh, stepped into the water to wash his legs and slipped.

It’s national pride, says Yechury

New Delhi, October 03: “We have more important issues than Commonwealth Games but now it is a matter of national pride,” so said Marxist Sitaram Yechury as he entered the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the opening of the Commonwealth Games.

Yechury was his unassuming self as he walked in with his journalist wife. “I am looking for my son, I don’t know where he is,” Yechury told. “I am looking forward to a colourful and creative opening ceremony.”
