India, Switzerland sign taxation treaty

New Delhi, August 30: India and Switzerland on Monday signed a treaty that will enable exchange of information on tax evaders, considered a must for getting details on unaccounted funds stashed away by Indians in Swiss banks.

The treaty is a revised version of the existing Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement between India and Switzerland and was signed by visiting Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

NTSE results 2010 are out

New Delhi, August 30: Department of Educational measurement and evaluation, NCERT, New Delhi has published the final result of National Talent Search Examination 2010 (NTSE-2010).

NTSE results 2010 have been uploaded on NCERT’s official website http://www.ncert.nic.in/html/talent.htm.

Students can visit the aforesaid website to download or see the NTSE results 2010.

The final list of selected candidate through NTSE 2010 has been published in PDF form on the website.

The successful candidates will be given scholarship for their further studies.

Two month reprieve for BlackBerry

Mumbai, August 30: BlackBerry mobile phone maker Research In Motion(RIM) on Monday escaped a ban of its popular core services for at least two months after it offered to give security agencies access to them with immediate effect.

Facing tomorrow’s shutdown deadline for the encrypted BlackBerry Enterprise Services (BES) and BlackBerry Messenger Services (BMs), the Canadian phonemaker RIM made certain proposals for lawful access to these popular services by the country’s law enforcement agencies, giving some relief to the country’s one million subscribers.

Dhoni seeks divine blessings in Ranchi

Ranchi, August 30: After his team’s loss in the tri-nation ODI series, Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni sought divine blessings in home city Monday.

Dhoni went to Deori temple near Ranchi with his wife Sakshi, father Pan Singh and other family members and prayed there for 15 minutes. He arrived in Ranchi from Sri Lanka Sunday.

India had lost the tournament final to Sri Lanka by 74 runs.

There is popular feeling that Dhoni’s performance declines if he fails to visit the Deori temple, around 40 km from Ranchi on the Ranchi-Jamshedpur national highway.

Bruni branded prostitute in Iran

Tehran, August 30: French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s wife Carla Bruni has been branded as “prostitute” in Iran after she opposed an Iranian court’s ruling of awarding death sentence by stoning to a women for adultery, a media report said here.

The former supermodel, who became President Nicolas Sarkozy’s third wife two years ago, has signed a petition calling for the release of Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two who has been facing capital punishment for allegedly cheating on her husband and then helping to kill him.

Naparajit Mukherjee to be next WB police chief

Kolkata, August 30: Naparajit Mukherjee will take charge as the new Director-General of West Bengal police from Bhupinder Singh, who retires tomorrow.

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today signed the letter of appointment of Mukherjee as the next DGP, said officials.

Mukherjee, a 1976-batch IPS officer, was the Director-General of the Intelligence Branch.

Singh, who served as DGP for 14 months, retires after 36 years of service.

CBI registers graft case against 2 BoI officials

New Delhi, August 30: CBI has registered a case against two officials of Bank of India in Khunti district of Jharkhand for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices.

A case under different Sections of IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Patras Sanga, Manager and Dev Kant Jha, Assistant Manager, Bank of India, Karra Branch of the district.

“It is alleged that the accused public servants entered into a criminal conspiracy with some unknown others during the period between 2009 and 2010.

Cash recovered from players’ hotel rooms: reports

London, August 30: Cash exceeding their daily allowance was recovered from the hotel rooms of the Pakistani cricketers implicated in the “spot fixing” scandal during a raid conducted by the Scotland Yard here.

“Mr (Yawar) Saeed received a phone call at the team’s hotel in Swiss Cottage, north London, at about 7.30pm telling him that two police officers were waiting to see him. Police spent two hours searching rooms, including that of Mr Butt and several players, before confiscating the phones of the captain and Aamer and Asif,” a report in the ‘The Independent’ said.

SC upholds death penalty for 3 AIADMK workers

New Delhi, August 30: The Supreme Court today upheld the death sentence awarded to three AIADMK workers for burning to death three hapless college girls at Dharampuri district in 2000 following the conviction for former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a corruption case.

A Bench of Justices G S Singhvi and B S Chauhan rejected the plea of the convicts for a lenient view and said their gruesome offence fell under the category of “rarest of rare offence” warranting death penalty for C Muniappan, Ravindran and Nedunchezhian.

PC is right in saffron terror remark, says Paswan

New Delhi, August 30: Home Minister P Chidambaram, whose remark on “saffron terrorism” has led to controversies, today found support from an unusual quarter with LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan backing him on the issue but accusing Congress of “shielding saffron organisations”.

“Chidambaram is correct. He is not simply an individual but also the Home Minister of the country and if he has given any statement, he must have done it with full responsibility.

ICC to take serious action in match-fixing: Sharad Pawar

New Delhi, August 30: International Cricket Council (ICC) president Sharad Pawar Monday said serious action will be taken against any cricketer involved in match-fixing after the London police complete their investigation into the match-fixing allegations surrounding the Pakistan team.

Pawar said the ICC will wait for the investigation to be completed.

Hyderabad, August 30: The state Government today appointed the senior IPS officer K.Aravinda Rao as the new Director General of Police Andhra Pradesh. The Chief Minister K.Roshaiah singed the file appointing Aravinda Rao as the new state police chief. The outgoing DGP Girish Kumar would be retiring tomorrow and Aravinda Rao will be taking charge as at his place in state police headquarters at Lakdikapool.

Pak national, Indian men held with heroin worth Rs 10 cr

New Delhi, August 30: A Pakistani national and his two associates from Jammu were arrested here allegedly with five kg of heroin worth about Rs 10 crore with police today claiming that they have unearthed an international drug racket.

Mohd Ramzan (43), residing in Lahore, Jyoti Sharma (45) and Naresh Kumar (26), both residents of Jammu, have been apprehended from near Humayun’s Tomb in south Delhi’s Nizamuddin area yesterday.

Jaganmohan to defy party High Command yet again

Ahmedabad, August 29: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today sought an apology from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for use of the term ‘Saffron Terrorism’ by the Home Minister.

“The post of the Prime Minister has been devalued and he has become helpless as someone else is in control of the administration,” Modi said at a public function here.

Sri Lanka cabinet backs president

Colombo, August 30: Sri Lanka’s cabinet is backing a change in the country’s constitution that will allow the current president to run for a third term in office.

“The cabinet backed a move to amend the constitution,” an official at the president’s office said Monday on condition of anonymity, AFP reported.

The way is now open for a vote in the country’s parliament, but any amendment must also be approved by the Supreme Court.

If approved, President Mahinda Rajapakse could stand again in elections, which will be held in November 2016.

Maoists kill 5 security men in Bihar gunfight

Lakhisarai, August 30: Five policemen were killed and 10 others injured during a fierce encounter with Maoists, who decamped with 35 rifles of the security personnel in Lakhisarai district, a senior police official said Monday.

Ten other security personnel went missing after the encounter and a helicopter has been pressed into service to locate them.
