Mumbai, August 23: Brit-actress Katrina Kaif is now the brand ambassador of the United Arab Emirates’ Etihad Airways. The actress feels honoured to have been considered to endorse the UAE’s national airline.

Although it is not yet been officially been announced, Andrew Ward, the vice-president (marketing) of Ethiad Airways and Neerja Bhatia, the manager of the airline in India will publicly announce it on Tuesday.

The officials of Ethiad Airways are looking at the association as the boost in the brand’s image!

Advani slams Munde for ‘mock parliament’ antics

New Delhi, August 23: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani was not amused with some of the party MPs joining Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh to hold a mock Parliament session and reprimanded his colleague Gopinath Munde for participating in it.

Advani was not happy with Munde, Kirti Azad, Maneka Gandhi, her son Varun and others BJP MPs from Lok Sabha joining Prasad and Mulayam – with whom the party does not see eye to eye on most issues – to hold the mock Parliament on Friday.

Pentagon could be behind rape charges: Wikileaks founder

New York, August 23: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange believes that the Pentagon could be behind the false rape charges that were filed against him on Friday by Swedish prosecutors and then withdrawn after a few hours.

“I don’t know who’s behind this but we have been warned that, for example, the Pentagon plans to use dirty tricks to spoil things for us,” Assange told Swedish daily Aftonbladet.

So far, Pentagon has not reacted to the charge.

ICET counselling for minority candidates from today

Hyderabad, August 23: The online counseling for ICET-2010 qualified minority candidates for admission into MBA and MCA courses of Muslim, Christian, Sikh and Linguistic minority colleges will start from tomorrow (August 23).

Lift restrictions on YSR statues: Lagadapati

Vijayawada, August 23: Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal on Sunday sought the lifting of restrictions on the number of statues of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy to be installed in each district.

Mr Rajagopal told media persons that the restrictions imposed by the Congress High Command that only one statue of the late leader should be installed in each district is against the wishes of the people. The Vijayawada MP said that people of every nook and corner of every village in the state desire to install a statue and they themselves are coming forward to do so.

TDP MLA Seethakka demands reimposition of prohibition

Hyderabad, August 23: Telugu Desam Party MLA Seethakka on Sunday demanded that the state government reimpose total prohibition in the state in order to protect the health of the people of the state.

Talking to reporters at NTR Trust Bhavan, Seethakka said “the state government had granted liberal permits to liquor shops in contravention of rules and regulations in order to increase its revenues.”

She blamed the “skewed policy of the state government for the mushrooming of unauthorised liquor outlets.”

GHMC new initiative to empower women

Hyderabad, August 23: The Urban Community Development Department of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is in the process of giving final shape to the ambitious ‘Mahila Bhavans’ programme envisaged by Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy.

The Mahila Bhavans will be set up in all the 150 divisions of the GHMC and are designed to better the lives of those women living below the poverty line.

The Mahila bhavans programme is expected to be launched from September. These ‘bhavans’ will be set up in GHMC Community Halls.

Decision on web based EAMCET counseling Today

Hyderabad, August 23: The state government will make a announcement on Monday regarding the web-based counseling for Engineering, Agriculture and Medicine Common Entrance Test-2010 (EAMCET-2010), stated Technical Education Commissioner K Lakshminarayana.

Speaking to media persons on Sunday, Mr Lakshminarayan said the government has decided to conduct counseling for EAMCET candidates from August 29.

The government will announce the dates for verification of certificates and option for students and other related issues in the web-based counseling on Monday, he stated.

Families of 9/11 victims to protest mosque at Ground Zero

New York, August 23: Families of the victims of the 9/11 terror attack in New York would hold a protest at the site of the World Trade Centre to oppose the construction of a mosque there.

The families would be joined in the protest in Manhattan Sunday by firefighters, people who responded first to the attack, and residents of the neighbourhood, CNN reported.

‘Protests will take place Sunday, rain or shine,’ said the Coalition to Honor Ground Zero, which is organising the rally.

PM to raise visa issue during Obama visit: Preneet

‘US might return to Iraq if asked’

Baghdad, August 23: Declining to rule out his country’s return to combat, he said, “If they ask us that they might want us to stay longer, we certainly would consider that,” General Ray Odierno told CBS on Sunday.

“That would obviously be a policy decision that would be made by the national security team and the president over time,” he said.

This comes only a few days after the US announced the withdrawal of the last combat brigade from Iraq after 7.5 years since the beginning of war in the country.

But Washington still maintains some 50,000 troops in Iraq.

Tehran, August 23: In separate decrees issued on Sunday, Esfandiyar Rahim-Mashaei was appointed as the presidential envoy for Middle East and Hamid Baqaei for Asian affairs. Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh was assigned as the special envoy for Caspian Sea issues and Abolfazl Zohrehvand is Iran’s representative for Afghanistan affairs, Mehr News Agency reported.

In a letter addressed to Mashaei, the president said that hegemonic powers seek domination over the sensitive Middle East region via propaganda and military tactics.
