Defiant Jagan to resume yatra today

Hyderabad, August 23: Congress MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy appears to be heading for showdown with the party leadership by launching his ‘Odarpu (consolation) yatra’ in his native Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh Monday.

A day after the leadership warned Jagan to drop his proposed yatra in Prakasam district from September 3, the son of former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy threw a challenge by deciding to undertake the yatra in Kadapa district.

‘Somalia blast kills fighters from India’

Mogadishu, August 22: An explosion at a house used by insurgents in the Somali capital killed at least 10 al-Shabab militants, including two Indians and three Pakistani fighters, the Somali Information Ministry has said.

The statement said on Saturday that the overnight blast, in a southern Mogadishu neighbourhood, may have been caused by a premature car bomb explosion. Three Pakistanis, two Indians, an Afghan and an Algerian were among the dead, it said.

The government cited “security sources” as the basis for its information.

Greg Chappell appointed Australia’s first full-time selector

Melbourne, August 23: Greg Chappell Former captain Greg Chappell on Monday became Australia’s the first full-time selector after being appointed as National Talent Manager by the Cricket Board.

Andrew Hilditch will continue to chair the National Selection Panel (NSP) and Chappell will join as one of its four members.

The former all-rounder, who played 87 Tests and 74 ODIs, will vacate his current role as CA Centre of Excellence (COE) Head Coach in Brisbane to take the new role, according to Cricket Australia.

Dambulla, August 23: Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara was on Sunday in no mood to implicate the umpires for the dodgy decisions they handed to Indian batsmen in the tri-series match in Dambulla and said India should have agreed to the use Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) to have a level playing field.

‘Leader decides on Iran-US talks’

Tehran, August 23: “The conditions of the talks with the Untied States will be only decided by the leader of the Islamic Revolution and not by any other individual in the country’s other branches of power,” Iran Labor News Agency quoted Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani as saying on Sunday.

Tehran, August 23: Iran began injecting the first supply of nuclear fuel into the Bushehr nuclear power plant on Saturday. The facility was completed with Russian assistance following a three-decade delay.

“Completion of the Bushehr project will create appropriate political effects in the international scene based on which Iran will proceed with its nuclear efforts in line with international agreements,” Mohammad Hossein Aboutorabi-Fard said on Sunday.

Iran launches dairy factory in Iraq

Baghdad, August 23: The plant produces 50 tons of dairy products per day, said Mohammad Mehdi Farshchi, the head of Hamedan provincial commerce organization, Mehr news agency reported.

The factory, funded and built by Iran’s private sector, is planned to distribute its products to the Iraqi cities of Najaf, Karbala, Sulaimaniya, Erbil and Baghdad.

Farshchi added that 12 Iranian technicians along with 33 Iraqi workers are working in the factory.

The report did not give further details about the location of the plant.

Seven Al Qaeda men killed in Yemen

Sana’a, August 23: Yemeni security forces killed seven Al Qaeda militants Sunday in a fresh clash in the country’s southern province of Abyan, authorities said.

Yemeni defence ministry said seven Al Qaeda men were killed Sunday in a raid carried out in the militant’s hideout in Lodar city, increasing the death toll of the militants to 12 since Friday, Xinhua reported.

The security forces laid siege to the terrorists who were holed up in some houses in Lodar, the ministry’s website quoted security director of Abyan, Brigadier Abdulrazaq al-Marwani, as saying.

India’s Atwal makes history with Wyndham win

Greensboro, August 23: Arjun Atwal became the first Indian-born player to win on the USPGA Tour by shooting a final round three-under par 67 to capture the Wyndham Championship on Sunday.

Major train collision averted in West Bengal

Kolkata, August 23: A major railway accident was averted in West Bengal Sunday when two trains moving in opposite directions came within 150-200 metres of each other on the same track after one of them overshot a signal, a railway official said.

The incident occurred around 3.20 p.m. near Sankrail station, some 20 km from here, in the Howrah-Kharagpur section when the Howrah-bound East Coast Express and a Panskura-bound local train came on the same track from the opposite direction, a spokesperson of the South Eastern Railway (SER) told IANS over phone.
