The memories of 9/11, 2001 have haunted not only the US but the whole of the World, as it changed the direction of global politics and the way people look at Islam and Muslims. This debate was brought forward again recently (August 2010) by a section of US society in the wake of proposed Islamic Cultural Center, near ground zero; the place where the World Trade Center was located. It has been presented as if a mosque is being constructed at ground zero, this will add insult to the injury, it will be a victory of global jihad, and it is a sign of Islamic expansionism.

Washington, August 24: The two Indian Americans on the White House inter-faith council, Eboo Patel, a Muslim, and Anju Bhargava, a Hindu, have strongly endorsed United States President Barack Obama’s support for the proposed mosque cum community and Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero in New York, saying it was a constitutional issue with regard to freedom of religion that had to be protected zealously.

Karan Johar Is More Than A Brother, Feels Kajol

Mumbai, August 24: Their friendship is a part of folklore in Bollywood. However, actor Kajol dismisses the idea of making Karan Johar a ‘rakhi brother’, though she does not have a real one.

“Karan is my friend and have always felt that connection with him. Definition of a friend for me is somebody that you chose and not that you are born with,” she said.

Karan is more than a brother. It’s a unique and fantastic friendship which I am grateful to have in my life,” Kajol told PTI.

She said she believed bonds are made from the heart.

ISI chief met Lakhvi in jail after 26/11: Headley to NIA

Washington, August 24: Arrested Lashkar-e-Toiba operative David Coleman Headley has told Indian interrogators that Pakistan ISI chief Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha visited Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to meet Lashkar’s chief military commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, held for the 26/11 attack on Mumbai. Headley also said ‘every major action of LeT is done only after the approval of (outfit founder) Hafiz Saeed’.

Saif’s Kids Turned Back From Mumbai Airport

Mumbai, August 24: Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh’s children, Sara and Ibrahim, were turned away from the immigration counter of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport recently because their visa for travel to the UK had Saif as a guarantor, who was not with them.

The kids are minors and a guarantor is mandatory for travel abroad, reports Media.

Sara and Ibrahim, who were travelling with their mother, eventually had to fly two days later.

CBI seeks enhanced security for Gujarat cop in jail

Ahmedabad, August 24: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday sought enhanced security in jail for former deputy superintendent of police N.K. Amin whose plea for turning approver in the Sohrabuddin-Kausarbi murder case is awaiting court orders.

The petition was filed by the premier investigating agency before the special CBI court in the wake of an attempted contract killing conspiracy on the life of Amin which came to light recently.

Ishrat Jahan killing: Court inquires about SIT’s view

Gandhinagar, August 24: The Gujarat High Court Monday asked the advocate general to verify if the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT) was inclined to take up the probe into the 2004 Ishrat Jahan killing in a suspected staged-shootout by Gujarat Police.

The SIT, headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director R.K. Raghavan, is probing key cases related to the 2002 post-Godhra communal riots in the state.

IGNOU to take latest farming knowledge to remote villages

Agartala, August 23: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is on a mission to reach out to farmers in remote and far-flung areas with the latest global information on farming and agriculture, a senior university official said here Monday.

“IGNOU is trying to reach people in remote areas with the latest global information in agricultural research and development,” IGNOU’s School of Agriculture (SOA) senior professor B.S. Hansra told reporters.

Armed men barge into house; loot valuables

New Delhi, August 23: Four armed men barged into a house in the capital and decamped with cash and jewellery worth around Rs five lakh, police said today.

The incident took place in the Yamuna Vihar residence of D P Aggarwal, who is working on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) schemes, last night.

Aggarwal’s son Vibhav Deep, who is an IT professional, told police that four armed robbers barged into the house and looted them.

A case has been registered.

Ayodhya case: Recording of evidence begins

Lucknow, August 23: After framing of charges against 23 accused in the Ayodhya demolition case, the Special Court today started recording evidence with the first CBI witness deposing before it.

The then Station Officer of the Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station, P N Shukla, who registered the case on December six, 1992, appeared before the Special Court (Ayodhya Prakaran) here.

The examination-in chief of the first witness was completed today, CBI counsel K P Singh said adding he would be cross-examined on August 31.

Gold continues to decline on profit-selling

Mumbai, August 23: Gold prices declined further at the bullion market here today due to lack of local buying interest coupled with mild stockists offerings at existing higher levels.

Silver, also eased in the absence of demand from industrial users.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) fell by Rs 30 per 10 grams to close at Rs 18,690 from last Saturday’s closing level of Rs 18,720.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also looked down by a similar margin of Rs 30 per ten grams to end at Rs 18,780 per ten grams, as against Rs 18,810 last weekend.

Two held for showing black flag to Buddhadeb

Midnapore (WB), August 23: Two Youth Congress activists were arrested for showing black flag to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee as he arrived here to review drought situation in West Midnapore district today.

West Midnapore is among 11 drought-hit districts in West Bengal.

Atin Gainti and Dipu Biswas were arrested when they waved black flag to the chief minister alleging “all-round failure” of the Left Front government, police said.

BJP favours fresh assembly polls in Jharkhand

Ranchi, August 23: BJP today said it favoured fresh elections in Jharkhand rather than opening talks again with JMM to explore possibilities of a government formation.

“I do not know how such rumours are spreading time and time again. Since withdrawal of support to Shibu Soren-led government, the party has always maintained its demand for mid-term polls,” BJP’s state unit spokesman Sanjay Seth told PTI here.

“The arithmetic in the 81-member assembly is such that it will not give a stable government,” he said.

Maoist leader arrested in Jharkhand

Hazaribagh (Jharkhand), August 23: A Maoist leader was arrested but 20 others managed to flee during raids at Bishungar in Hazaribagh district, police said today.

Acting on a tip-off, CRPF and police launched raids near Konar Dam and nabbed Maoist leader Kauleshwar alias Futani Thakur yesterday, officer-in-charge of the Bishnugarh Police Station, Anil Kumar Singh, said here.

Kauleshwar was among over 20 Maoists who were holding a secret meeting in dense forest of Konar Dam area in Bishnugarh near Bokaro, he said.

Amin’s wife concerned over husband’s security

Ahmedabad, August 23: The wife of N K Amin, accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, has expressed concerns about her husband’s security in jail, following claim by an undertrial that he was offered Rs 10 lakh to kill Amin.

Seeking more security for her husband, Jayshree made an application to the CBI which the investigating agency placed before special CBI court today.

Mumbai doctor dies of dengue

Mumbai, August 23: A doctor died of dengue in Mumbai on Monday taking the toll due to the deadly fever this season to four, an official said.

Doctor Rajan Palav, 32, was an ENT (ear, nose and throat) professor at the Grant Medical College, run by the J.J. Group of Hospitals.

“He had been keeping unwell since Wednesday. His reports were positive for dengue and he was getting treated at Hinduja Hospital,” said T.P. Lahane, dean of J.J. Hospital.

Total 434 new dengue cases in Delhi

New Delhi, August 23: At least 69 new cases of dengue were reported in Delhi since on Sunday.

Taking the number of those infected by the mosquito-borne disease to 434 this year, an official of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said on Monday.

According to an advertisement given by MCD in a newspaper Monday, it has issued 45,532 legal notices against owners of property where water stagnation was found. These conditions lead to breeding of mosquitoes.

Heavy rains in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand, August 23: Heavy rains on Monday continued to lash Uttarakhand disrupting the ongoing Chardham yatra and paralysing normal life with major rivers flowing near danger level in the state.

Haldwani received the maximum rainfall (65 mm) followed by Rishikesh (58 mm), Pantnagar (43 mm), Nainital (38 mm) and Banbasa (36 mm), the Met office said here.

It has predicted that present weather conditions would prevail for the next twenty-four hours with many places expecting to get moderate to rather heavy rainfall while heavy rains at isolated places in the state.

Son killed for refusing to beg

Chhattisgarh, August 23: A 11 year old boy was killed by his father, after he refused to join his father as a beggar in a Chhattisgarh village.

The man after killing his son buried him in his house. Police has arrested the man.

Ashok Nishad (50) smothered his son Bhola Nishad to death on Friday at Thethwarpara village in Dongargarh, some 125 km from Raipur. Ashok was an alcoholic.

“Nishad was forcing his son for a few months to join him for begging so that he could get more cash daily for liquor,” Vishwas Chandrakar, police station chief at Dongargarh said.

Report fails to establish immunisation deaths

Lucknow, August 23: The post-mortem report of the four infants, who died near Lucknow after getting vaccinated with anti measles vaccine has failed to establish the cause of the death following which authorities have decided to preserve their viscera for further tests.

“The bodies of the children were handed over to their parents as the cause of their death could not be ascertained in the post-mortem report. Their viscera have been preserved for further tests”, a senior police official said.

Four killed in CPI(M)-Cong clash

Kolkata, August 23: Four people on Monday were killed in a clash between CPI(M) and Congress supporters in Murshibad district in Kolkata.

The supporters of the two parties clashed at Ghughupara under Islampur police station over the election of a school management committee, IGP (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha said.

Three persons were detained for interrogation in this regard.

Tension was prevailing in the area and senior police officers have rushed to the spot.
