Soha Ali Khan roped in by Shreyas for Chemistry

Mumbai, August 25: The Iqbal star Shreyas Talpade, who has earlier produced a Marathi movie titled Sanai Chaughade, is now going to co-produce a Bollywood movie titled Chemistry. Talpade has signed actress Soha Ali Khan to play the female lead in the movie. Shreyas himself will act in the movie.

Rupee gains 4 paise in early trade

Mumbai, August 25: The rupee on Wednesday appreciated by 4 paise to Rs 46.86 a dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market in early trade, on sale of dollars by banks.

However, weak opening of the stock market and dollar’s strength against other currencies, capped rupee’s gain.

Forex dealers said selling of dollars by banks helped rupee to strengthen, but capital outflows by foreign funds and weak Asian currencies against the dollar restricted rupee’s
gain.

The rupee had ended 26 paise lower at Rs 46.90/91 against the dollar in the previous session.

Sensex opens 39 points low

Mumbai, August 25: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Wednesday opened over 39 points lower than the Tuesday’s close, on selling by funds and retail investors in realty, banking and metal sector stocks, triggered by weak global markets.

The 30-share barometer, which had slid by 97.76 points in the previous session, fell by another 39.33 points or 0.21 per cent to 18,272.26 points in the first five minutes of trading.

The wide-based National stock Exchange, Nifty index dipped below 5,500 points level to trade 16.05 points lowers at 5,489.05 points.

WikiLeaks to release new US war files

Washington, August 25: “Wikileaks to release CIA paper tomorrow,” the group announced on a Twitter post Tuesday.

The content of the upcoming release is not yet known. However, WikiLeaks had previously said that it is poring over a batch of 15,000 classified military documents from the US-led war in Afghanistan that it plans to publish soon.

Earlier in July, the group set off a firestorm when it made public some 76,000 US files covering the Afghan war from 2004 to 2010.

Nationality row: Vishy accepts Sibal’s sorry

Mumbai, August 25: In view of the raging controversy over the citizenship of the World chess champion Vishwanathan Anand , the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday apologised to chess wizard Vishwanathan Anand and made it clear that his nationality was never questioned by the ministry.

Anand has now agreed to accept the honour, Sibal said.

“I’m an Indian. I was trained in Spain but always retained my Indian passport. I accept HRD minister Kapil Sibal’s apology, will accept the doctorate,” Anand said, putting the unfortunate incident behind him like a true champion.

China plane crash kills 42

China, August 25: At least 42 people were killed and 49 injured on Tuesday night after a passenger aircraft crashed in the Yichun city of Heilongjiang province northeast China.

The E-190 jet of Henan Airlines crashed at 9.36 p.m while landing at the airport. The aircraft had taken off from Harbin city.

The plane was carrying 91 passengers, including five children and five crew members.

Forty nine people who survived the crash, were admitted to various hospitals for treatment.

Akshay Destroys A Man’s Cellphone Camera

Mumbai, August 25: Most Bollywood celebrities agree that cellphones with camera are a nuisance. They have become yet another tool to invade their privacy. Even Akshay Kumar, known to be the most patient man in the industry, lost his temper at a happy snapper outside a five-star hotel on Sunday night, reports Media.

The incident took place when the actor and his wife Twinkle left the hotel and were stepping into their car. A man stepped forward from the crowd and started taking their pictures on his cell phone.

Hamas slams ‘illegitimate’ direct talks

Gaza, August 25: “These negotiations are taking place by force of coercion and with an American summons,” the head of Hamas’ political bureau told reporters in the Syrian capital on Tuesday, the Canadian Press news agency reported.

Meshaal said the talks are “illegitimate and do not commit our people to anything.”

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton invited Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) to resume direct negotiations, frozen since Tel Aviv’s 2008 offensive against the Gaza Strip which killed more than 1,400 Palestinians — mostly civilians.

Yahoo’s search migrates to Microsoft

San Francisco, August 25: Yahoo has completed the migration of its web and mobile search functions to Microsoft’s Bing search engine as the two companies hope that their combined market power may prove a more significant threat to the dominance of Google.

The integration comes more than a year after Yahoo and Microsoft announced their 10-year search deal under which Microsoft will power Yahoo’s search site, while Yahoo manages sales for both companies’ premium search advertisers.

Katrina doll’s world debut

Mumbai, August 25: So far, the Katrina Kaif doll was kept only at a Barbie museum in the US. By December, markets the world over will be flooded with these dolls.

A global launch is in the offing. However, at the moment, neither Katrina nor the Barbie folks are allowed to talk about it.

But it is reliably learnt that a representative of the company flew in to Mumbai on Wednesday for discussions and face shots of Katrina were taken to build the Barbie model. These dolls would look exactly like the real Kat and would come in boxes carrying her description.

One has doubts working with first-time directors: Kajol

Mumbai, August 25: One of Bollywood’s finest actresses, Kajol says she was not keen to do “We Are Family” because it had a first-time director. She also believes being a mother in real life made a difference to her body language in the film where she is shown to have three children.

“Definitely. I think you always have doubts while working with first-time directors and it’s very sensible to do that,” Kajol, 35, told IANS in an interview about her latest film helmed by Siddharth Malhotra.

First Saudi woman to win an Olympic medal

Singapore, August 25: Equestrienne Dalma Rushdi Malhas did Saudi Arabia proud after she won the bronze medal on her horse Flash Top Hat at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Eighteen-year-old Malhas overcame four penalty points in the first round of the three-day event to qualify for the jump-off session, where she delighted the crowd to claim the bronze medal in the individual show jumping event in equestrian.

Dubai police arrest 4 over Indian gem heist

Mumbai, August 25: Three Mexicans and a Venezuelan were arrested on Tuesday in Dubai for diamond theft after an Interpol alert was issued by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation.

The four suspects, including one woman, are being charged with stealing $1.4 million worth of diamonds from a jewelry show in Mumbai.

The 887.24 carats of diamonds are believed to have been stolen from the booth of the Israeli-based diamond company Dalumi Group. The four were reportedly observed stealing the precious stones on CCTV.

Indian jailed on rape charges in Australia

Melbourne, August 25: A court in Australia jailed an Indian national for 13 years, for allegedly raping a young university student in Melbourne last year.

27-year-old Harjot Hundal Singh dragged the woman into his van, tied her hands and told her to stop shouting or he would kill her, according to an AAP report on Wednesday.

Obama funds restoration of global Islamic sites

Washington, August 25: The good will tour of the Middle East by the imam behind the proposed mosque near the former site of the World Trade Center is just part of the U.S. government’s efforts to reach out to the Muslim world.

This year, the Obama administration will spend nearly $6 million to restore 63 historic and cultural sites, including mosques and minarets, in 55 nations, according to State Department documents.

Under a program established by Congress in 2001, the department will fund at least five projects in as many countries at a cost of more than $271,000.

Indian held with jihadi literature in US

New York, August 25: An Indian has been arrested for carrying jehadi literature at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, a media report said.

Vijay Kumar, 40, was arrested Friday after security officials searched his luggage when they noticed him behaving strangely, the New York Post reported Monday. Kumar said he is from Mumbai.

Officers found books and diagrams on espionage, information on US military weaponry, publications mentioning “jehad” and “infidels,” brass knuckles and at least $8,000 in US bills.

Australian priest sacked over child pornography

Melbourne, August 25: A former school church priest has been sacked from a girls’ college in Sydney after being charged with possessing child pornography.

Reverend Matthew David O’Meara, 40, who worked at St Michael’s Grammar School for three years until December last year, was sacked by Perth girls’ College after the alleged discovery of pornographic images of children aged between eight and 12.

Archbishop Roger Herft said O’Meara’s licence had been suspended pending the outcome of the case. The priest is to appear in court Sep 2, The Age reported.

Netanyahu has no time for IAEA chief

Jerusalem, August 25: Netanyahu’s office cancelled the meeting, saying “he would speak on the telephone to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] Yukiya Amano later this week,” Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz reported on Tuesday.

The IAEA director general is on his first visit to Israel, having asked to hold talks with the premier months ago.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Security Adviser Uzi Arad would likewise not be meeting with Amano.

Alcohol doubles breast cancer risk

London, August 25: A glass of wine a day doubles a woman’s risk of developing a common type of breast cancer, say scientists.

Women drinking just seven units of alcohol a week – half the recommended safe level – have a much increased chance of developing lobular cancer, compared to those who don’t drink at all, reports express.co.uk.

Lobular cancer is the second most common form of breast cancer and is the most common in women between 45 and 55 years.
