Hyderabad University too apologises to Anand

Hyderabad, August 25: The University of Hyderabad is embarrassed over the human resource development (HRD) ministry withholding clearance to its proposal to confer an honorary doctorate on world chess champion Vishwanathan Anand and has apologised to the grandmaster.

The university, which was planning to confer the honour on Anand along with renowned mathematician David Mumford of Harvard University Monday, had to cancel the programme.

Cyber police station for city

Hyderabad, August 25: Stating cyber crime offences were rising at an alarming rate, Hyderabad police commissioner AK Khan said on Tuesday that such offences will only increase in the coming days.

While inaugurating the new cyber crime police station in the premises of the Central Crime Station, AK Khan said the city police felt the need for starting a dedicated cyber police station as the number of cyber crime cases has been on the rise. Till now, there had been only a ‘cyber cell’ for dealing with cyber offences.

Green hurdle for YSR memorial

Hyderabad, August 25: Is the Union Environment and Forest Ministry averse to the State Government’s proposal to construct a memorial for the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy at Pavuralagutta in Kurnool district where the former chief minister died in a copter crash on Sept 2 last year?

According to a report published in a Delhi-based newspaper, a committee constituted by the ministry studied the proposal and recommended that no permission be granted for the same.

Iraq bombings: 33 dead in string of attacks

Baghdad, August 25: A string of more than a dozen attacks targeting Iraqi security forces stretching from one end of the country to the other killed 33 people and left scores wounded on Wednesday, police and hospital officials said.

There were no claims of responsibility, but the scale and reach of the violence, which comes a day after the number of US troops fell below 50,000, underscored insurgent efforts to show their might as the American military presence in Iraq shrinks.

Congress whip to Lok Sabha MPs on n-liability bill

New Delhi, August 25: The Congress has issued a whip to its members in the Lok Sabha asking them to be present in the house when the nuclear liability bill will be taken up for discussion Wednesday afternoon.

“A whip has been issued to members to be present in the house,” Congress chief whip in the Lok Sabha Paban Singh Ghatowar told IANS.

Congress sources said the party had also urged its allies in the ruling United Progressive Alliance to ensure the presence of their members in the house during the discussion.

PRP ready to work with like-minded parties: Chiranjeevi

Visakhapatnam, August 25: The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) is open to political understanding with like-minded parties and also for alliances at the time of elections, party president Chiranjeevi said here Wednesday.

“We are ready to work with like-minded parties. We will work with them towards addressing peoples’ problems. We will also have electoral alliances. But elections are far away,” he told a media conference here ahead of the inauguration of the party’s first plenary after its formation two years ago.

Absconding Stephen Court fire accused arrested

Kolkata, August 25: Sanjay Bagaria, one of the directors of the city’s landmark building Stephen Court where a major fire killed 43 people earlier this year, was Tuesday arrested from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

“Yes, he has been arrested,” Joint Commissioner of Police Javed Shamim confirmed.

Bagaria was arrested from a guest house, where he had been hiding all these months, a police officer said.

Iran-Turkey gas pipeline hit by blast, flow stopped

Tehran, August 25: Iranian natural gas flows to Turkey were halted after an explosion and could take up to a week to resume after repairs are completed, officials at the Turkish pipeline operator Botas said on Wednesday.

It was the second time in a little over a month that an explosion halted gas imports from Iran on the key link.

“The fire has been extinguished, and repair work is ongoing,” one official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Police find 72 bodies in Mexico ranch

Mexico, August 25: At least 72 bodies have been discovered on a ranch in northeastern Mexico, in what is seen as one of the worst cases of drug-related violence in the country.

The bodies, including those of 14 women, were found Wednesday after a shoot-out with suspected drug cartel gunmen near San Fernando in Tamaulipas state.

The assault left one marine and three gunmen dead. The military also arrested one underage suspect.

Iran test fires Fateh-110 missile

Tehran, August 25: Iran has successfully test-fired a new version of the domestically-built Fateh missile, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi says.

Addressing a group of reporters on Wednesday, General Vahidi announced that the new generation of Fateh-110 is a medium-range ballistic missile with improved precision in targeting, completely engineered by Iranian experts.

As part of the Islamic Republic’s general plan to bolster its military might, the top commander stated that the third-generation Fateh has a quicker launch time.

Man shot in head, notices 5 years later

Berlin: Police say a man living in Germany was shot in the back of his head, but that it took him five years to realize it.

Police said that the 35-year-old man was hit by a .22-caliber bullet in the western town of Herne as he was out in the street partying and drunk on New Year`s Eve five years ago.

They say the man recalled receiving a blow to the head, but told them he didn`t seek medical assistance at the time.

K Jo cuts controversial scenes from We Are Family

Mumbai, August 25: Producer Karan Johar and director Siddharth Malhotra have finally cut out nine minutes worth of footage from their upcoming movie We Are Family starring Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal.

The movie had a scene where the recent racist attacks on Indian people in Australia were referred to. But both the director and the producer feared the scenes might create controversy. So they deleted them from the final version of the movie.

Permission granted for Dr. VRK Women’s Medical College

Murder plot foiled

Hyderabad, August 25 (Siasat News): Police nabbed two persons and foiled a murder conspiracy. They also seized two daggers from their possession.

According to an official release a Task Force team nabbed Mazher Hussein, 26 and Nayeem Khan, 23, while they were moving near jama Masjid, Ramnaspura and seized two daggers.

According to police one Shabbir and his friend Mazher had rivalry with regard to a plot of land in Mustafa nagar. Further investigations are on.

Chidambaram speaks on Internal security

New Delhi, August 25: The Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday said that there is no direct and credible response from the Naxals to the centre’s dialogue offer.

Chidambaram was addressing a meet of the police chiefs in the national capital.

On the Jammu and Kashmir situation, Chidambaram expressed concern over the ongoing cycle of violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I am afraid J&K is now caught in a vicious cycle of stone pelting, lathicharge, teargassing and firing, leading to casualties and resulting in more stone pelting,” he said

Mumbai, August 25: Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee is known for her proximity to Yash Raj Films and is even linked to Aditya Chopra.

She has even received lots of flak for doing films by the banner and ignoring other filmmakers. But surprisingly, she didn’t attend Yash Chopra and Pamela Chopra’s wedding anniversary party.

N-bill to be tabled in Parliament on Wednesday

New Delhi, August 25: The government on Wednesday would present the civil nuclear liability bill in Parliament.

The Minister of State for Science and Technology Prithviraj Chavan reached out to the Bharatiya Janata Party and Left Parties in last two days to consider their views.

A day after Chavan met the senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party Arun Jaitely, he had a meeting with CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday.
