61 killed in Iraq attacks

Baghdad, August 26: At least 61 people were killed and more than 180 injured in a series of attacks across Iraq Wednesday, mainly bomb blasts targeting police stations.

A member of parliament for the Iraqiya List, a party headed by former premier Iyad al-Allawi, called for an emergency session of parliament in response to the blasts, which went off in 10 cities.

‘The explosions today represent a major crisis in regards to security,’ Falah Hassan Zaidan al-Haybi told DPA.

Man poisons to death daughter over love affairs; 3 held

Madurai, August 26: Three persons including a hospital assistant were arrested for allegedly murdering a teenaged girl at the behest of her father who was fed up of her love affairs, police said here. Rangaswamy, running a tractor workshop here, was unhappy with his daugther”s love affairs with some boys.

He felt ashamed when various boys claimed having an affair with his daughter, they said. Irked by this, he decided to murder her and took the help of his workshop workers Murthy, Velmurugan and hospital assistant Balasubramanian to execute his plan.

Heavy inflow of water into Andhra”s Srisailam reservoir

Hyderabad, August 26: Government machinery in Andhra Pradesh got into high alert as a threat of flood in river Krishna loomed large late tonight due to heavy inflow of water into the Srisailam reservoir. Srisailam reservoir has been receiving an inflow of 4.20 lakh cusecs of water from upstream Jurala project even as the Tungabhadra river was also overflowing.

5 AP judges caught cheating, suspended by HC

Hyderabad, August 26: In an embarrassment to the judiciary, three district judges in Andhra Pradesh were caught copying in an examination. The judges, along with seven advocates, were debarred from LLM (Master of Law) examination when they were caught red-handed in the copying act at an exam hall. They were appearing in the exam to become eligible for departmental promotions.

Sohrabuddin aide’s murder also part of conspiracy: CBI

New Delhi, August 26: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has told the Supreme Court that Gujarat staged shootout victim Sohrabuddin Sheikh’s aide Tulsiram Prajapati was also killed as part of a criminal conspiracy.

Prajapati’s killing was an integral part of the criminal conspiracy behind abduction and killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausarbi in 2005, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the court in an affidavit filed last week.

Bus hijacker killed in Manila

Manila, August 25: A sacked police officer seized a tourist bus and opened fire at his hostages, killing eight of them, before he was shot dead by police ending an over 10-hour-long hostage drama in a seaside park in Manila city Monday.

Eight of the dead were Chinese passengers held for more than 10 hours inside the air-conditioned bus in a seaside park in Manila city, the Philippine government said.

The hostage-taker, dismissed police officer Rolando Del Rosario Mendoza, was also killed in an exchange of gunfire with the police assault team, authorities said.

32 killed in Sudan floods

Sudan, August 25: At least 32 people were killed and 18 injured in floods and heavy rains in western Sudan, reports said on Monday.

The casualties in Sudan’s North Kordofan state were caused by “drowning, thunderbolts and collapse of houses”, web media reports says, citing local media reports.

The report said 886 houses completely collapsed, while around 11,000 houses were partially destroyed.

The Sudanese Supreme Council of Civil Defence Monday warned that due to the continuing rains on the Ethiopian plateau, the Nile water could rise to a critical level of 17 metres near Khartoum.

Visakhapatnam, August 25: The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) is open to political understanding with like-minded parties and also for alliances at the time of elections, party president Chiranjeevi said here Wednesday.

“We are ready to work with like-minded parties. We will work with them towards addressing peoples’ problems. We will also have electoral alliances. But elections are far away,” he told a media conference here ahead of the inauguration of the party’s first plenary after its formation two years ago.

60 dead in Somalia clashes

Somalia, August 25: At least 40 civilians were killed and 106 injured in fighting between insurgents and government troops in the Somali capital of Mogadishu since Monday.

“The toll increased to 40 civilians and 106 others injured since Monday,” web media said, citing an international TV report.

“The fierce conflict between Somali rebels and government forces continues until now,” the report said.

Sania storms into second round of US Open qualifiers

New York, August 25: India’s Sania Mirza stormed into the second round of the US Open tennis women’s singles qualifiers with a facile 6-2, 6-2 victory over Russian Ksenia Lykina.

Sania next plays another Russian, 150th-ranked Elena Bovina, who scored a fighting 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1 upset win over 15th-seeded German Tatjana Malek. This is the first time since 2005 that Sania has to play a qualifying round in a Grand Slam. The 23-year-old Indian, once ranked as high as 27, has now slipped to 160th in the world.

Indian held in US released on bail

Washington, August 25: An Indian film maker Vijay Kumar, who was arrested at the airport in Houston for carrying jihadi literature and brass knuckles, has been released on bail.

Kumar has been released on a USD 5,000 bond and ordered not to move out of the city till Friday.

40-year-old Kumar was arrested at George Bush Intercontinental airport last week after “acting suspicious,” when screeners thought they saw a possible handgun in a scan of his baggage. He was detained by immigration authorities at immigration holding facility for questioning.

Peepli Live set to hit screens in Britain

Britain, August 25: Aamir Khan’s much talked about and highly successful production venture “Peepli Live” will be released in Britain Sep 24. And the actor-filmmaker plans to tour the country extensively to promote the satirical comedy that is breaking new ground.

Aamir has also made a request to all his fans in Britain to watch the film only when it officially releases there and not on pirated DVDs or by downloading it from the internet, said a press statement.

He feels that the movie buffs can truly enjoy the “Peepli Live” experience in theatres only.

New Delhi, August 25: Warning that there has been no let-up in attempts to radicalise the youth, Home Minister P Chidambaram today said a new phenomenon of “saffron terrorism” has now come to the fore.

Inaugurating a conference of chiefs of police forces of the country, Chidambaram also expressed concern over the situation in Kashmir Valley and hoped that in the next few days, a “starting point” would be found to reach out to protestors and restart the process for a dialogue.

Akhsay apt to play Mikha Singh: Big B

Mumbai, August 25: The Megastar Amitabh Bachchan proposed the name of Akshay Kumar to play the role of athlete Mikha Singh on screen.

Mehra is working on a bio-pic of the athlete and met Bachchan during the staging of the play “Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai”, on Sunday.

The megastar felt that Milkha Singh’s life and times made a terrific story.

London, August 25: Pop singer Britney Spears has been transformed into a Manga character on the cover of a Japanese magazine, dressed in a series of risque outfits.

The singer is on the September cover of ‘Pop’ magazine, dressed as a Manga doll wearing a lace negligee.

Other pictures show the mother-of-two dressed as a bride and a schoolgirl.

The 28-year-old had earlier donned a schoolgirl outfit, more than ten years ago for the video of her hit debut ‘Baby One More Time’.

But Britney is defending the pictures, insisting they are art.

Civil and police personnel trapped due to floods

Patna, August 25: Several civil and police personnel have been trapped at Raibari Mahua in Bihar’s West Champaran district due to flash floods caused by turbulent Gandak, prompting the authorities to engage NDRF personnel to evacuate them to safer places.

Officials told PTI that over 150 civil and police personnel went to the village following reports of communal tension over passage of a religious procession from near a cemetery yesterday.

Burqa not to be forced on girl students in Bangladesh

Dhaka, August 25: Bangladesh government Wednesday asked the educational institutes in the country not to force Muslim girl students to wear veils or religious attire.

Education Secretary Sayed Ataur Rahman also directed the institute authorities not to restrain women students from participating in sports and cultural activities.

The direction comes after a high court ruling last Sunday which said that it was illegal for any educational institution to force girl students to wear burqa (veil) or bar them from participating in any sports and cultural activities.

PMO seeks industry support for Leh rehabilitation

New Delhi, August 25: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Wednesday sought the industry’s support for rebuilding the infrastructure and rehabilitating people affected by recent flash floods in Leh and Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir.

TKA Nair, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, met top office bearers of leading Indian industry associations including CII, FICCI, Assocham, PHDCCI and SCOPE, to seek their support for rehabilitation of the victims of Aug 6 natural disaster, said an official statement.

Need effective phone jammers in Tihar Jail: court

New Delhi, August 25: The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed the Tihar jail authorities to install jammers to check illegal use of mobile phones in the prison.

The direction came while disposing a matter taken up by it on its own initiative after an unidentified prisoner wrote to Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja in 2009.

Taking a serious view of the use of mobile phones by inmates in the prison, the high court May 25 directed the authorities to seize all the phone instruments within three days.
