Mosque must be built near 9/11 site: Bloomberg

Washington, August 26: Amid opposition from various quarters to the proposed mosque near Ground Zero, the New York City mayor on Wednesday strongly supported its construction close to the site of the fallen Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre.

“If we say that a mosque and community centre should not be built near the perimeter of the World Trade Center site, we would compromise our commitment to fighting terror with freedom,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at the annual Ramadan celebrations at Gracie Mansion.

Sarkozy proposes G20 secretariat

Paris, August 26: French President Nicolas Sarkozy Wednesday proposed the formation of a Group of 20 secretariat to oversee the implementation of important decisions by the bloc of major world economies.

In a speech to French ambassadors, Sarkozy also proposed the body take on more issues related to development and climate change. The G20, which includes leading industrial and developing countries, currently focuses only on economic issues.

Angelina’s donation surpasses Zardari’s help

Islamabad, August 26: Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has contributed $100,000 (about Pakistani Rs.8.5 million) for flood ravaged Pakistan, a move that surpasses President Asif Ali Zardari’s Rs.5 million donation and the help extended by most other politicians.

Some leaders have refused to disclose their contribution to the relief effort and claimed that their donation had gone directly to their party’s fund.

Dawn reported Wednesday that Jolie has contributed $100,000 while Zardari and Altaf Hussain, chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, claimed to have donated Rs.5 million each.

Gmail allows phone calls from computers

New York, August 26L Google Inc. Wednesday said its Gmail service will add a feature that allows users to call any phone directly from their computers.

“Starting today, you can call any phone right from Gmail,” Robin Schriebman, a software engineer at Google, wrote on the company’s blog.

“We’ve been testing this feature internally and have found it to be useful in a lot of situations, ranging from making a quick call to a restaurant, to placing a call when you’re in an area with bad reception,” Schriebman wrote.

450 arrested in China telecom scam

Beijing, August 26: Police from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have busted a gang involved in a major telecommunications scam and arrested 451 suspects.

Among those arrested Wednesday, 186 suspects are from Taiwan, one is a Hong Kong national and the remaining are from China, Xinhua reported citing the ministry of public security.

Police said that in May, a Taiwan national named Jiang rented an overseas server and set up a telecommunications fraud network in China’s Fujian province. The network provided number changes and other technical services to cheat consumers.

Kangna Ranaut’s Stalker Nabbed

Mumbai, August 26: Akash Bharadwaj, a delusional fan of Bollywood actor Kangna Ranaut, was arrested by Mumbai police, says a Media report. Bhardwaj was having an imaginary affair with her.

It was reported last year that a young man in his 20s was sitting on a hunger strike outside Leena Mogre’s gym, where Kangna works out regularly.

Hyderabad, August 26: One Patnam Maheshwar Goud and his son Vijay Pratap were arrested on Wednesday following a complaint from the latter’s wife that the duo was physically and mentally harassing her for additional dowry.

The complainant, Ms Vishnupriya of Vidyanagar of Hyderabad, said that she was married to Vijay Prathap last year. She said that her parents gave the groom Rs One crore and performed the marriage on a grand scale. Even before a year, she started facing physical, mental and sexual harassment from her father-in-law.

No cause for worry, enough urea available: Raghuveera to farmers

Mahabubnagar, August 26: Minister for Agriculture N Raghuveera Reddy on Wednesday sought to assuage the growing fears of farmers in the state over the availability of urea in the state.

He told media persons that there is no shortage of urea in the state and the farmer’s fears were unfounded.

Revealing details, Mr Raghuveera Reddy said that the government has allocated 9,000 metric tons of urea for each district and is prepared for supplying additional urea if needed.

CM’s Nellore trip cancelled over bad weather

Hyderabad, August 26: Inclement weather on Wednesday forced Chief Minister K Rosaiah to cancel his Nellore visit.

Mr Rosaiah was scheduled to attend the marriage function of Kandukar MLA Mahindar Reddy’s daughter.

Mr Rosaiah had earlier arrived in Tirupati to oversee the arrangements for the Prime Minister’s visit on August 31.

Sohrabuddin killing: Farm house owner denied bail

Gandhinagar, August 26: The Gujarat High Court Wednesday rejected the bail application of the owner of a farm house where Kauserbi, wife of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, was suspected to have been kept before she was killed.

Justice Z.K. Saiyed rejected the bail plea of Raju Jirawala, owner of Arham farm house in Ahmedabad, on the ground that the investigation into the case was still in progress.

His plea was rejected by a lower court earlier.

Raju is the brother of Bharatiya Janata Party municipal corporator from Ahmedabad Surinder Jirawala.

Hearing on Modi’s quizzing by riots panel put off

Gandhinagar, August 26: The hearing on a plea seeking summoning of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and three others before the Justice G.T. Nanavati commission probing the 2002 riot cases was Wednesday deferred till Sep 7.

Jan Sangharsh Manch (JSM), an NGO representing the riot victims, approached the commission afresh after the Gujarat High Court direction July 23.

The high court asked the riot panel to “look into the matter after taking into consideration facts in their record”.

The ‘Batman Begins’ actress who is married to Tom Cruise would play alongside Adam Sandler in the comedy movie, which tells the tale of a man who has issues with his twin sister.

Bomb found in Los Angeles school

Los Angeles, August 26: Around 2,000 students and staff of a school in Los Angeles were evacuated Wednesday after a pipe bomb was found in the campus, police said.

A bomb squad was dispatched immediately to the Manual Arts High School in South Los Angeles to disable and remove the item, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer Rosario Herrera was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Traffic was routed away from the campus, he said.

The three-page document, dated Feb 2, 2010, is called ‘What If Foreigners See the United States as an ‘Exporter of Terrorism?”, the CNN reported.

British doctor kills self as lover weds in Pakistan

London, August 26: A junior doctor in Britain committed suicide by taking an overdose of drugs after hearing about her Pakistani boyfriend’s arranged marriage, a court was told.

Jennifer Suraweera, 26, took a fatal overdose three weeks after her Pakistani boyfriend and colleague, Jawad Usman, told her he was getting married in his home country.

She was found drowsy and unresponsive by her brother Raj at her flat, the Sheffield Coroner’s Court heard.

A post mortem examination revealed Jennifer had taken a fatal dose of the beta-blocker Propanalol, Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

Chinese airline involved in crash suspends operations

Beijing, August 26: The company whose aircraft was involved in Tuesday’s deadly crash which killed 42 people and injured 54 has decided to cancel all its flights for safety reviews, officials said.

The operations of Henan Airlines, based in Henan province, would be suspended for an unspecific time, said Wu Zhenkun, an official with the provincial aviation regulatory committee.

A Henan Airline jet crashed during landing at the airport in Yichun city in Heilongjiang province Tuesday night, killing 42 and injuring 54 people.
