Google, AP reach deal on online news

San Francisco, August 31: Google and the Associated Press have reached a new deal that will allow the web-search giant to continue running stories from the AP on its Google News site, the internet company said Monday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed in the announcement, which was posted on Google’s official blog.

Google has not been linking directly to breaking AP stories since January when a previous agreement between the two sides expired. However Google still referred readers to older AP stories, and to AP stories at AP clients websites under a temporary licensing agreement.

Ex-envoy Blackwill returns to US think tank

Washington, August 31: Former US Ambassador to India, Robert Blackwill, is returning to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a leading US think tank to focus on American foreign policy toward India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Naming Blackwill, a deputy national security advisor for strategic planning under President George W. Bush, as Henry A. Kissinger Senior Fellow for US Foreign Policy, CFR President Richard N. Haass said: “We are thrilled to have Bob back at the Council on Foreign Relations.”

Obama to mark Iraq transition with major address

Washington, August 31: US President Barack Obama was to mark the formal end of the US combat role in Iraq with a visit Tuesday to a Texas military base and a major evening televised address.

Obama is expected to hail the transition to an Iraqi-led, civilian-led effort as a major milestone in the seven-year US war effort. White House officials said he will pledge that the handover will not end the US commitment to Iraq and its security.

Bips to stars: do issue-based films for free

Mumbai, August 31: Bipasha Basu, who was just seen in “Lamhaa” and is now getting ready to do a film on honour killings, feels issue-based films should be made with small budgets to make them “commercially viable” and stars shouldn’t charge any fee to work in them.

“Don’t charge any money for working in such (issue-based) films. It’s the only way to make issue-based films commercially viable,” said Bipasha, whose “Lamhaa” dealt with the problems in Kashmir. But it couldn’t earn enough profits at the box office.

US trade group for absolute liability for n-plant operators

Washington, August 31: A leading US trade group wants India to adopt a nuclear liability regime channelling absolute and exclusive liability to nuclear power plant operators and establishing a sole remedy for compensation of claims.

“These principles are basic to international best practices as reflected in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Convention on Supplementary Compensation (CSC),” the US India Business Council (USIBC) said Monday.

Lady Gaga doesn’t want to be rich

London, August 31: Singer Lady Gaga has confessed she doesn’t want to be rich.

The “Bad Romance” hitmaker, who has overspent by more than two million pounds on the North American leg of her ‘Monster Ball’ tour, says she is not in the industry for the money, reports fashion.ie.

“I spent every dollar I made on my music, my art. Every dollar. I don’t wait to get budgets from the label. I do it on my own. I don’t want it in my hand,” she said.

Pregnant wife sets on fire by hubby

Bangalore, August 31: The couple disagreed on the wife’s job, her decision to keep the child and the man’s wish to convert back to Hinduism.

A nine-month pregnant woman was allegedly set on fire by her husband last night. Twenty-four-year-old Meharunnisa, who sustained 35 per cent burn injuries, was due to deliver her first child in a couple of days. In her declaration to the police, she held her husband responsible for her condition.

White House sued for ‘targeted killings’

Washington, August 31: On Monday, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights filed the lawsuit, protesting the death warrants including the one, signed by the country’s President Barack Obama, against Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born cleric, who is identified by the White House as an al-Qaeda leader, Reuters reported.

Al-Awlaki was born in New Mexico and spent years in Virginia, before moving to Yemen, where he is said to be currently staying.

Mumbai, August 31: Arjun Rampal, who plays a divorcee with three kids in his upcoming movie “We Are Family”, claims the film will break the image of the stepmom who is more often than not portrayed in a negative light in Hindi movies.

Maharashtra questioned on Pragya Singh’s bail plea

New Delhi, August 31: The Supreme Court Monday issued notice to the Maharashtra government on a bail petition filed by Sadhvi Pragaya Singh Thakur, the main accused in the 2008 Malegaon bombing which killed six people.

An apex court bench of Justice J.M. Panchal and Justice Gyan Sudha Misra issued the notice after senior counsel Mahesh Jethmalani told the court that after being picked up from Surat by the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) of the Maharashtra Police, Pragaya Thakur was kept in illegal detention for 14 days Oct 10-23, 2008. She was taken from Surat to Pune.

Mumbai, August 31: After cooking up a crackling chemistry with Aamir Khan in the blockbuster “3 Idiots”, actress Kareena Kapoor says she wants to team up with him once again.

“I want to work with Aamir, but he is not doing any film for a year,” Kareena lamented. That seems Kareena is not satisfied sharing big screen with Aamir and wanrs more of him.

Mumbai, August 31: Sonakshi Sinha defines her relation with Bollywood actor, Salman Khan as more of friendship and less of being a fan.

Sonakshi will be making her big Bollywood debut with Dabangg opposite Salman.
