SC issues notices to Bharti, others over unsolicited calls

New Delhi, August 26: The Supreme Court today issued notices to telecom operator Bharti Airtel, GSM lobby COAI and private banks ICICI bank and American Express over unsolicited calls to mobile phones.

A bench comprising Justice V S Sirpurkar and Justice Cyriac Joseph issued notices to Airtel, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and private sector banks ICICI and American Express and directed them to file their reply in eight weeks.

People from India highest immigrants to UK

London, August 26: People from the Indian sub-continent were given the highest number of settlement grants in UK, according to new official figures released today, amid the David Cameron government’s efforts to reduce immigration.

The coalition government’s objective is to reduce migration from India and other countries outside the European Union to ‘tens of thousands’ rather than ‘hundreds of thousands’.

The Office of National Statistics figures show that the net migration rose last year to 196,000, which was up by 33,000 from the number in 2008.

Sohrabuddin case: CBI quizzes Gujarat cop for 9 hours

Gandhinagar, August 26: Police commissioner of Gujarat’s Rajkot town Geetha Johri was quizzed for almost nine hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) here Thursday in connection with the 2005 staged killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

She arrived at the CBI office here around 10.30 a.m. and left around 7 p.m.

This is the second time that she is being questioned by the CBI, the first time being in March this year.

Uphaar fire case: No relief to Kanth

New Delhi, August 26: The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to stay criminal proceedings against former police officer Amod Kanth for allegedly allowing extra seats in the Uphaar cinema hall where 59 cinegoers died in a fire tragedy in 1997.

Justice Sanjeev Khanna also issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Kanth’s plea challenging the proceeding against him.

The high court however restrained the trial court from passing judgment in the case till the case is decided by it.

3180 kg of spurious ghee seized

Rewari, August 26: Police today arrested two persons for their allegedly involvement in manufacturing fake ghee and seized 3180 kg of spurious ghee in Dharuhera near here.

Following a tip-off, a specially constituted police team conducted raids at the shops of three dealers – Surender Sharma, Mahender Singhal and Laxmi Narain, District police chief K Venkat Ramana said.

While Sharma and Singhal were arrested for their allegedly involvement in manufacturing spurious ghee, Narain managed to flee from the shop, he said.

Exclusive police TV channel mooted at DGPs’ meet

New Delhi, August 26: Views of police force, success stories of investigators, workout schedule for securitymen and legal advice for them will be on air daily if a suggestion to launch an exclusive police TV channel is accepted by the government.

The idea was floated during the two-day conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of police forces of the country here and it was supported by many of the top police officers.

Sources said such a TV channel will help the two million policemen, including 18 lakh police constables, across the country.

Diamond heist: Accused remanded in police custody

Mumbai, August 26: Four foreign nationals, arrested for allegedly stealing diamonds worth Rs 6.6 crore in a daring heist at a jewellery show here, were today brought from Dubai and remanded in police custody even as an international lookout notice was issued for their fugitive accomplice.

Police said preliminary investigations have revealed that the group was involved in similar incidents in Hamburg and several other countries.

Lok Sabha debates ‘serious’ Kashmir issue

New Delhi, August 26: The government Thursday drew flak for its alleged failure to contain the latest Kashmir unrest with MPs in the Lok Sabha expressing concern over the “serious” and “sensitive” state of affairs in the troubled state.

Fifteen MPs took part in a special debate that remained inconclusive even as much of the day – from 12 noon to 6 p.m. – was dedicated to it. The discussion will be concluded Friday when Home Minister P. Chidambaram replies in the lower house.

Maoists unleash attacks in Jharkhand to avenge arrests

Ranchi, August 26: A day after the arrest of two hardcore Maoists, the Leftwing rebels Thursday hit back, attacking a police station, setting ablaze six trucks, and blasting a government building and a political party office in Jharkhand while enforcing their 24-hour strike in parts of the state.

Maoist guerrillas first attacked Pirtand police station around 1 a.m. in Giridih district, some 210 km from here, District Superintendent of Police A.V. Homkar told reporters.

“A fierce gun battle ensued with the police, which lasted for about four hours. There were no casualties,” he added.

KCR meets PC, seeks withdrawal of cases against students

New Delhi, August 26: Home Minister P Chidambaram today assured TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao that he will request Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah to withdraw cases against thousands of students, which were filed during last year’s pro-Telangana agitation.

Rao met Chidambaram at his office in North Block here and rued that cases against students have not been withdrawn even nine months after his appeal to the state government to drop those cases.

Amitabh Bachchan a ‘police informer’ in Jharkhand

SC commences hearing on Mutthiah’s plea

New Delhi, August 26: The Supreme Court today commenced the hearing to examine the validity of the amendment by the BCCI in its regulations to exclude IPL and T-20 tournaments from its purview.

Former BCCI president A C Muthiah has challenged the Madras High Court’s order upholding the validity of the amendment alleging that it was done to favour BCCI secretary N Srinivasan who owns the Chennai Super Kings T-20 squad.

Mumbai, August 26: Supporting the demand of prime slots for Marathi movies in multiplexes, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan today said importance should be given to promotion and encouragement of regional cinema in the country.

The 44-year-old actor, who was targeted by the Shiv Sena during the release of his latest blockbuster ‘My Name Is Khan’, said regional films are made with a small budget and should be encouraged more.

Divorce granted by khap panchayats not valid: SC

New Delhi, August 26: Divorce between estranged couple approved by khap panchayats (caste council) will have no legal sanctity, the Supreme Court has ruled.

A Bench of Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan upeld an Allahabad High Court judgement that had quashed a Varanasi Family Court’s ruling that divorce between Mahendra Nath Yadav and Sheela Devi had become effective since it had been approved by the khap panchayat.

Satyam scam: Court adjourns hearing on framing of charges

Hyderabad, August 26: The special court dealing with the multi-crore Satyam Computer scam case today adjourned the hearing on arguments of framing of charges against the ten accused for tomorrow.

After hearing the arguments of two former auditors of PriceWaterhouse (PW), S Gopalakrishnan and his deputy Talluri Srinivas, and two other accused B Suryananarayan Raju and Ch Srisalam, the XXI additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) adjourned the case.

CBI court refers Amin’s plea to turn approver to Gujarat high court

Ahmedabad, August 26: A special CBI court today referred the application of NK Amin, an accused in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case who wants to become an approver, to the Gujarat high court to decide on its constitutional validity.

Additional chief judicial magistrate AY Dave, referred the matter to the high court after some of the accused opposing Amin’s plea for becoming an approver, raised questions about its constitutional validity.

Court adjourns hearing on bail plea of Madhuri Gupta

New Delhi, August 26: A Delhi court today adjourned the hearing on the bail plea of disgraced diplomat Madhuri Gupta after Delhi Police sought time to file case laws with regard to her plea of supplying copies of documents relied upon by it to seek her prosecution under the Official Secrets Act.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja allowed public prosecutor Rita Sharma’s plea for time to file judgements in connection with the application of Gupta with regard to supply of documents.

The court posted the hearing on 53-year-old Gupta’s application for bail for September four.
