Foreign journalists can now apply online for accreditation

New Delhi, August 01: Following a directive from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has initiated steps to simplify accreditation procedures for foreign journalists in India. They will now be able to apply for it online from their respective countries even while applying for a visa, officials said.0

“We have taken steps to cut down on the time taken for security clearance,” said Neelam Kapur, principal director general, PIB.

Mob hurls bombs at train; driver, 2 passengers injured

Jamui (Bihar), August 01: A train driver and two passengers were injured when crude bombs and stones were hurled at the engine and next bogie of Muzaffarpur-Sealdah Express between Jhajha and Simultala railway stations in Bihar’s Jamui district tonight.

Police said around 12 persons threw stones at the engine targetting the driver and later hurled crude bombs towards the next bogie forcing the train to stop at Rajla halt. The assailants managed to flee before security personnel could reach the spot.

Dutch troops begin to withdraw from Afghanistan

The Hague, August 01: The Netherlands Sunday began the phased withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan, the Dutch foreign ministry in the Hague said, after four years of active operations in the conflict.

Dutch soldiers handed over their Kamp Holland military base in the south of the country, where they had been responsible for the Uruzgan region, to a joint force of US and Australian troops.

According to some reports, the Taliban congratulated the Dutch on their decision.

Toronto, August 01: A posthumous album featuring 10 never-before-heard songs from the King of Pop Michael Jackson is set for a November release.

At the time of his death, Jackson had reportedly left hard drives filled with previously unreleased music.

His former manager Frank DiLeo estimates Jackson’s vaults contain more than 100 completed and unreleased songs, including collaborations with Akon, will.i.am and Ne-Yo.

Army officer with AK-47 bullets arrested at airport

Lucknow, August 01: An Indian Army officer was arrested at the Lucknow airport Sunday after two AK-47 cartridges were found in his baggage, police said.

Identified as Captain Varun Misra, the officer had come on leave to his hometown Bahraich, and was on his way back to his place of posting in Goa when he was taken into custody by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) before boarding a flight to New Delhi.

Even as the officer pleaded that the two cartridges were with him by mistake, CISF personnel at the airport refused to let him off. He did not possess any weapon.

New Delhi, August 01: Private air carrier Kingfisher Airlines, India’s only Five Star airline rated by Skytrax, on Sunday launched daily direct flights on the New Delhi?Ludhiana?New Delhi route.

VHP demands Afzal’s hanging

New Delhi, August 01: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) led a rally here on Sunday demanding parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s hanging.

“He attacked not our parliament but our conscience and self-respect. He should have been hanged the day he was caught,” said Surendra Jain, VHP’s national spokesperson.

The rally was held in Tilak Nagar area of the capital. Protesters carried placards and banners demanding Afzal Guru’s hanging.
