3 lakh without water as floods damage pipelines

Beijing, August 02: Floods caused by torrential rains damaged pipelines leaving 300,000 people without water in Tonghua city in China’s Jilin province, an official said Monday.

Wang Ruimin, head of the public utility bureau in Tonghua, said four water pipelines had been damaged since Sunday, cutting water supply to the whole city.

Wang said the bureau has mobilised 300 workers to repair the pipelines, but no deadline could be given as to when water supply would be resumed.

New York, August 02: Christian evangelical churches in the United States blasted a Florida church’s plans to burn copies of the Muslim holy book on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida had called for repeating its “Everybody Burn Quran Day” it celebrates “in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam.”

“If I want to win a Muslim to Christ, I surely won’t do it by burning the Qur’an in public and provoking them to hate us more.”

Dubai, August 02: More than a million BlackBerry users may have key services in Saudi Arabia and the UAE cut off after authorities stepped up demands on smartphone maker Research In Motion (RIM) for access to encrypted messages sent over the device.

BlackBerry’s Messenger application has spread rapidly in the Gulf Arab region but because the data is encrypted and sent to offshore servers, it cannot be tracked locally.

PM releases postage stamp on Kerala Muslim leader

New Delhi, August 02: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday released a commemorative postage stamp on the late Syed Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal, a Kerala Muslim leader known for his knowledge and commitment to Sufi traditions.

The stamp was released on Thangal’s first death anniversary.

Manmohan Singh, in his speech, described the late leader as “a great son of Kerala”.

Thangal was an influential spiritual leader who led the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for more than three decades.

Clear verdict for T-State formation: KK

Hyderabad, August 02: The Rajya Sabha member and Congress Working Committee permanent invitee, Dr K Keshava Rao, has said that the people have given a clear verdict in the by-elections reiterating their demand for separate Telangana state.

He said that he and other Telangana leaders would discuss about the formation of Telangana state with the UPA chairperson and Congress supremo, Ms Sonia Gandhi.

He also claimed that Ms Sonia Gandhi was in favour of carving out separate Telangana State.

Nine die as violence escalates in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, August 02: Violence escalated in Kashmir Valley on Sunday leaving at least nine people, including a woman, dead in two separate incidents.

While four people were killed in police firing in Pampore, four more died when an ammunition store exploded in the Khrew police station after it was attacked by a mob. Unofficial reports said two people injured in the violence too died.

26/11: Kasab’s hearing in Bombay High Court today

Mumbai, August 02: The petition to confirm the capital punishment for Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist of the 26/11 attack will be presented before the Bombay High Court on Monday.

This comes two months after Kasab was convicted and given the death sentence by a special court in Mumbai.

Kasab was given the death sentence on five different counts and was found guilty of waging war against India, for killing 166 people and for terrorist activities among other charges levelled against him.

Sangakkara topples Sehwag from No.1

New Delhi, August 02: Sri Lankan skipper, who smashed double hundred in the second Test, toppled the Indian batsman Virender Sehwag from his numero uno position in ICC test ranking.

Sangakkara pushed Sehwag to second position to regain the top position after 2009. Sehwag lost his position after making 99 runs in the first innings.

On the other hand, Sangakkara scored his seventh double hundred (219) in the first innings and 42 not out in the second innings of match, which ended in a tame draw.

Tiger attacks continue in Tirupati

Tirupati, August 02: Thanks to the lax attitude of forest officials, attacks by tigers on humans are increasing day-by-day in the hill shrine of Lord Venkateshwara in Tirupati.

Kalyani, an eight-year-old girl, hailing from Penchulapadu near Guntakal in Anantapur district, was injured in a tiger attack on the wee hours of Sunday when she was heading towards Tirumala on footpath near 45th Mile point.

The girl was rushed to Ruia Hospital by passersby where she was declared out of danger.

No link between defeat and anti-separatist stand of Seemandhra leaders: JC

Anantapur, August 02: Former minister JC Diwakar Reddy on Sunday stated that there is no link between the party losing heavily in the by-elections and the anti-bifurcation stance taken by the Seemandhra Congress leaders.

Modi Will Prove Suicidal For Cong: BJP

New Delhi, August 02: Slamming the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government for allegedly using the Central Bureau of Investigation to target the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Sohrabuddin case, senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said any move to question Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the case would prove “suicidal” for the Congress.

“We learnt that CBI is going to question Gujarat Chief Minister Narendera Modi in connection with Sohrabuddin case, which would prove suicidal for the Congress party,” he told reporters in Hyderabad.
