PCC chief to review bypoll results

Hyderabad, August 02: After the defeat, now it is time for looking at reasons. PCC chief D Srinivas will confer with the candidates who lost the byelections in Telangana districts, ministers who were made in charge for all the 12 constituencies and the three AICC observes tomorrow at 11 a.m. Gandhi Bhavan. As a prelude to tomorrow’s meeting, a few MPs and CLP leader and minister J Geetha Reddy met Srinivas and discussed the by poll verdict in the morning. After the meeting, Geetha Reddy said there was no need to replace Srinivas since “nothing worked in the face of strong sentiment.”

TRS to keep pressure on in Parliament, Assembly

Hyderabad, August 02 : With the T movement reaching a decisive stage, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leadership has decided to keep pressure by raising the issue in Parliament and Assembly. The party decided to corner the TDP leaders and force them to demand a resolution in favour of T state in the Assembly when it sits in session in November or December.

Eshan Reddy’s ‘suicide’ case shifted to CCS

Hyderabad, August 02: The ‘suicide’ case of P Eshan Reddy, an engineering graduate who ended his life on the Osmania University campus yesterday for separate Telangana, was transferred to the Central Crime Station (CCS) for further probe.

Though police could recover a suicide note, purportedly written by Eshan Reddy at the spot, they want to investigate if there was any foul play behind the youngster’s death.

GHMC members inspect roads and sanitation

Hyderabad, August 02: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) chief engineer R Dhan Singh informed all GHMC floor leaders and deputy mayor Jaffer Hussain that major road repair works would be soon undertaken on roads badly damaged due to the recent heavy rains. He said the tender process has been completed and the works would be executed in a few days.

E Rajendar elected TRSLP leader

Hyderabad, August 02: E Rajendar has been reelected as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi Legislature Party (TRSLP) Leader here today. The newly-elected TRS MLAs met at Telangana Bhavan under the chairmanship of party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao.

The meeting elected the new body for the TRSLP. The meeting was attended by 10 MLAs out 11.

Hyderabad, August 02: Chief Minister K Rosaiah agreed in principle for applying new UGC scales to the teaching doctors of medical education department with effect from November 1, 2006. This was decided in a review meeting on medical health held at camp office today.

The state government is going to spend Rs 80 crore annually on account of this decision.

Forest conservator objects to Sompet power plant

Hyderabad, August 02: The regional chief conservator of forests, Bangalore, has objected to the location of the 2×660 MW (phase-I) super critical coal-based thermal plant in Sompet mandal in Srikakulam district.

He inspected the site today.

Chief conservator K S Reddy was mandated by the ministry of environment and forests to inspect the area after keeping the environment clearance for the thermal plant in abeyance, honouring public sentiment against the location of the project by the NCC Power Projects Limited.

Parents Association writes to Sonia Gandhi for regulating school fees

New Delhi, August 02: Unhappy over arbitrary fee hikes in private schools across the county, the All India Parents Association Saturday asked the National Advisory Council Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to recommend to the central government bringing a law to regulate fees in schools.

The association in a letter to Gandhi said that while the government schools lack basic academic infrastructure, the good quality unaided private schools exploit the parents by charging huge amounts.

Notice to government, Delhi Police on ban on protests

New Delhi, August 02: The Delhi High Court Monday sought the response of the central government and the Delhi Police on a petition challenging a ban on holding protests in the central and New Delhi districts.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan issued notice to the government and the police on a petition filed by Bano Bee, an activist associated with an organisation working for the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy.

Kachru ragging case: Fast track court resumes trial

Dharamsala, August 02: A fast track court in this Himachal Pradesh town Monday resumed the trial against four medical students, accused of ragging to death first year student Aman Kachru last year, after they surrendered last week on cancellation of their bail.

The accused – Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma – surrendered in a local court here July 29 after the Himachal Pradesh High Court cancelled the bail given to them by the trial court.

Saudi Arabia unveils world’s largest clock

Riyadh, August 02: Saudi Arabia is ready to begin operating the world’s largest four-faced clock, in Makkah, Islam’s holiest city, Saudi state news agency reported Monday.

The tower, designed by German and Swiss engineers, will be over 600 metres high, six times the height of London’s Big Ben.

The front portion of the clock is decorated with glass mosaic, and is made of carbon fibre, a highly-resilient material used in aerospace and other technologies.

The clock tower is part of Abraj al-Bait hotel and residential complex, built by the Saudi Bin Laden construction group.

Two swine flu deaths in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, August 02: A 56-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man died of swine flu here Monday – the first deaths in Orissa due to the pandemic H1N1 virus this year, a senior health official said.

‘The woman from city’s Sailashree Vihar area tested positive for swine flu July 30. She was kept on ventilator at a private hospital where she succumbed to the illness,’ Bikash Patnaik, joint director in the state health directorate, told IANS.

The man from Tomando area, of the city died of the disease at another private hospital, he said.

Four fresh dengue cases in Delhi

New Delhi, August 02: With four fresh confirmed cases of dengue in the capital Monday, the number of people affected by the mosquito-borne disease has gone up to 61 this year, an official said.

‘Four people tested positive for dengue in Delhi today (Monday),’ Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s Chief Medical Officer N.K. Yadav told IANS.

One person has died this year due to dengue in Delhi.

Rockets hit Israel, Jordan resorts; one dead in Aqaba

Jordan, August 02: Rockets from Egypt’s Sinai, an area where Islamist militants have operated in the past, struck Israel’s and Jordan’s Red Sea port resorts on Monday, killing a Jordanian civilian and injuring three others, Jordanian and Israeli police said.

A Jordanian interior ministry source said that one of the four injured when one rocket exploded near a five star hotel in Aqaba, died from his injuries.

There was no word of casualties in the adjacent Israeli port and holiday resort of Eilat, police said.

Supreme Court to examine maintenance issue in live-in relationships

New Delhi, August 02: The Supreme Court today said a woman in a live-in relationship cannot be deserted without any security and decided to examine whether she can claim maintenance from a man with whom she was in such a relationship.

A Bench of the court said the issue regarding the maintenance of a woman in live-in relationship involves a larger question of law with the changes in the society.

Get safety certificate before moving into stadiums, CGOC told

New Delhi, August 02: Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chief executive officer Mike Hooper Monday sought clarification from the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) on the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) report on the safety of the venues and also asked it to get a safety certificate from the venue owners before taking over the stadiums.

CBI raids Ayurvedic Medical college in Amritsar

Amritsar(Pun), August 02: An eight member CBI team today conducted a surprise raid at an Amritsar-based Medical college and scrutinised the institute’s accounts and academic records.

The CBI sleuths remained inside the college premises from noon till evening and none of the staff members were allowed inside the office during this period, police said.

However, the college authorities described the CBI exercise as a routine checking.

But police officials said the raid was conducted based on complaints of some fake degrees issued in the past.

Technical teams have moved into stadiums: Top CWG official

New Delhi, August 02: Technical teams have already moved into various stadiums to start work on overlays, though the venues will be formally taken over only after getting the mandatory clearances from their owners, Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) secretary general Lalit Bhanot said Monday.

Bhanot said the CGOC is responsible for the technical conduct of the Games and they are, in fact, ahead of schedule as their teams have already moved into the venues to work on the overlays and they expect it to complete by Aug 15.

13 railway employees grilled in Sainthia accident

Kolkata, August 02: The West Bengal police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Monday grilled 13 Eastern Railway employees who were on duty at the time of the July 19 Sainthia train accident in which 63 people were killed.

“We had summoned 13 people who were on duty at Sainthia and Gadhadharpur stations, including the driver of the Vananchal Express and the guard of the Uttar Banga Express, to know the exact situation at the time of the incident,” said a CID officer on condition of anonymity.
