Muslims, Jews still like Obama

Washington, August 28: Muslims and Jews in the United States remain among the most ardent supporters of President Barack Obama, whose overall job approval ratings have been falling sharply.

A Gallup poll which tracked opinions over a period from January 21 to July 31 showed 78 percent of Muslims and 61 percent of Jews approved of Obama’s job performance.

The president’s overall rating in the Gallup poll has slipped from 63 percent from the January-June 2009 period and 53 percent in July-December 2009, Gallup figures showed.

Why only Muslims are targeted by police in cases of violence?

New Delhi, August 28: As far as communal violence and police’s partial role in it is concerned it must be admitted that our laws are very good and our police force is capable of bringing riots and violence under control but in spite of all this we have failed in bringing cases like Gujarat riots under control simply because our police officers in spite of being in khaki uniform remain Hindu or Muslim and the men in khaki uniform act with the mentality of ‘we’ and ‘they’. For them Muslims are ‘they’ even now.

Khurshid says case against Raju to gather speed now

Hyderabad, August 28: Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today exuded confidence that the Satyam fraud case will pick up pace now, with the prime accused and founder chairman Ramalinga Raju appearing before a Hyderabad court.

Raju had appeared for the first time in a local court earlier this week, where he is being prosecuted in a Rs 14,000 crore case of financial mismanagement filed by the CBI, after being given bail by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Khurshid, however, cautioned that the case should not be pre-judged.

Amin tells court he fears for life in jail

CBI pressurising me to implicate Shah, others: Johri

New Delhi, August 28: Senior Gujarat-cadre Indian Police Services officer Geeta Johri has filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging that the Central Bureau of Investigation has been pressurising her to implicate some political leaders, including arrested Bharatiya Janata Party leader Amit Shah, in connection with Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

In a curative petition filed with the apex court, she has sought the removal of Balwinder Singh, CBI’s special director who is supervising the investigation into the case, and said he be made a witness in it.

New York mayor plays golf with holidaying Obama

New York, August 28: New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg paid a visit to Martha’s Vineyard, where Barack Obama is on a holiday, and played golf with the US president.

The mayor was invited by Obama to talk about the economy, a White House spokesman told New York Post Friday.

“The president and Mayor Bloomberg took the opportunity to discuss plans for short- and long-term economic growth at a pivotal point in our recovery,” said Reid Cherlin.

Minor damage to gate of Rushdie’s villa at Solan

Shimla, August 27: The gate of British-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie’s ancestral house at Solan in Himachal Pradesh suffered minor damage when a big eucalyptus tree fell over it following recent heavy rains, the house caretaker Govind Ram said today.

“The 150-foot-tall tree fell on the main gate yesterday, blocking passage to the villa,” the caretaker of Rushdie’s house, known as Anees Villa, said.

Permission to Vedanta given by UPA-I: BJP

New Delhi, August 27: BJP today reacted to Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s statement on the stalled Vedanta mining project in Orissa, saying this was an attempt to “fool” the people as permission to the firm was given by UPA-I.

“People will not be fooled because Vedanta permission was given by UPA-I. P Chidambaram (Home Minister) was a director of Vedanta and Abhishek Singhvi (Congress spokesperson) was their advisor,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar claimed.

Spicejet Founder Director Ajay Singh exits board

New Delhi, August 27: Ajay Singh, one of the founder directors of Spicejet, has left the board of the low-cost airline, paving the way for restructuring of the company by its new owner Kalanithi Maran, the promoter of Sun TV.

The company, in its annual general meeting (AGM) held today, also announced that along with Singh, another director of Spicejet Ltd, Atul Sharma, has decided to leave the company.

Sadhvi to be shifted to Mumbai from Nashik for treatment

Mumbai, August 27: A special MCOCA court today directed for Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, prime accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, to be shifted from Nashik to Mumbai for treatment for lumps on her right breast.

The sadhvi has been lodged at the Nashik central prison after the special court in July last year dropped all MCOCA charges from the case.

However, the Bombay High Court in July this year applied the stringent provisions of MCOCA back in the case following which all the 11 arrested accused were directed to be shifted back to Mumbai.

Two suspects in Jnaneshwari train case arrested by CBI

Kolkata, August 27: Two persons have been arrested by CBI for their alleged involvement in the Jnaneshwari Express train derailment case.

The duo — Dayamoy Mahato, junior trackman and Ram Mudi, resident of Lakajhuria, Jhargram — were arrested on August 25 and three railway identity cards of same serial number, two mobiles and five SIM cards seized from their possession.

Both the accused were produced before a court in Jhargram yesterday and were remanded to police custody till September 4, CBI spokesperson Harsh Bhal said today.

Interpol help sought to probe online cheating cases

Chennai, August 27: The Tamil Nadu police has sought the assistance of Interpol in the investigation of 12 online cheating cases with the arrest of Nigerian nationals in numerous cases in the state.

“In most of the cases, Nigerians are the masterminds and the cybercrime wing of CB-CID has arrested four Nigerians,” the CB-CID said in a release here.

The online crimes concerned lottery and job frauds and the agency has registered 13 cases this year and 25 since 2007.

BJP warns against demolition of temples

Ranchi, August 27: With nearly 40 religious structures here reportedly getting notice for alleged encroaching, BJP today said it would strongly oppose any move to demolish any structure by the district administration.

“Several priests have received notice from the district administration that their temples would be demolished. The BJP warns against any move to demolish temples will be met with stiff resistance,” BJP?s state unit spokesman Sanjay Seth told a news conference here.
