Naidu’s Tirumala padayatra today

Hyderabad, August 07: Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu will undertake a padayatra to Tirumala shrine tomorrow to supplicate before God to give wisdom to the rulers to take measures to preserve the sanctity of the shrine.

Speaking to reporters here today, he said the padayatra would be devoid of any political overtones.

“No one will carry TDP flags. We will be trekking as devotees of the Lord,’’he said.

26 more new engineering colleges get affiliation

Hyderabad, August 07:Clearing the decks for engineering counselling, the All-India Technical Education Council (AICTE) today sanctioned affiliation to 663 engineering colleges including 26 new colleges in the state. The list of engineering colleges which were sanctioned approval was handed over to the delegation of the technical education department in New Delhi today.

2 State excise officials amass assets in Haryana

Hyderabad, August 07: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths, for the first time, unearthed properties amassed by State government officials in other parts of the country. They found that two excise officials, from Guntur and Nellore districts, together had disproportionate assets worth Rs 2 crore, including agricultural land in Gurgaon and Fareedabad in Haryana.

The market value of the assets, however, could be more than Rs 10 crore.

CBI may probe TTD missing jewels

Hyderabad, August 07: The State Government has reportedly decided to hand over the much publicised case of the alleged disappearance of ancient jewellery of Lord Venakteswara to the CBI.

Sources said the decision was taken to set at rest wild speculations surrounding the missing jewels. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the jewellery of the Balaji temple, has of late been rocked by several controversies, but the missing jewels hogged the headlines for obvious reasons.

IV Rao appointed VC of NTR health varsity

Hyderabad, August 07: I Venkateswara Rao has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of NTR Health University at Vijayawada. Governor ESL Narasimhan, who is also the chancellor of the university, appointed Venkateswara Rao for a term of three years with effect from the date of assumption of office.

Birthday boy, student drown in sea off Chirala

Ongole, August 07: The birthday party of an engineering student ended on a tragic note with two students being washed away by waves at the Vodarevu beach near Chirala today. Singamsetti Suneel of Nova Engineering College at Ibrahimpatnam went to Vodarevu along with 20 friends to celebrate his birthday.

When the revellers got into the sea, one of them, Ch Mahesh, was washed away at first. Suneel, who tried to save his fried, was also snatched by the strong waves.

Conspiracy against Jagan’s followers alleged

Hyderabad, August 07: Stepping up attack again on the party leadership in the state, suspended PCC general secretary Ambati Rambabu on Thursday alleged that a section within the Congress was bent upon ousting the followers of Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy from the party.

“There is also a conspiracy being hatched to bury the family of former chief minister late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy politically,” he said.

B.Ed college fee hiked by Rs 1,100

Hyderabad, August 07: The state government hiked B.Ed fee by Rs 1,100 by an order today from this academic year. The tuition fee of B.Ed has been raised from Rs 12,400 to Rs 13,500 per annum for all A and B category seats in all private unaided colleges (minority and non-minority) in the state for the next three academic years.

The special fee has been fixed at Rs 3,000 per annum.

Resolution would have been defeated by 225 votes

Hyderabad, August 07: Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal said that if a resolution favouring separate Telangana was introduced in the Assembly following the statement by Union home minister P Chidambaram, it would have been defeated by a 225-vote majority.

When justice Srikrishna asked about the Assembly adopting a resolution after Chidambaram’s statement in December last year, Rajagopal said it would have been defeated by 225 votes. He pointed out that the powers to adopt a resolution were cancelled to states through the Constitution.

Delhi comes alive with ‘kanwariyas’

New Delhi, August 07: Orange-robed men on the streets, roadside camps for them to rest, high decibel cries of ‘Har Har Mahadev’… Delhi is witnessing an intoxicating fervour in one of the biggest annual religious events of northern India.

Carrying richly decorated poles on their shoulders, the kanwariyas fetch Ganga water from Haridwar. And they walk home, some barefoot, covering hundreds of kilometres to various villages and towns in northern India to worship Lord Shiva during the month of Shravan (monsoon).

President to inaugurate Rs.30 crore prayer hall in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, August 07: President Pratibha Patil will Friday inaugurate what is believed to be the costliest prayer hall in Kerala and probably one of the fanciest in the country that was built at a cost of Rs 30 crore. It is shaped like a white lotus and will be unveiled at the Santhigiri Ashram near here.

Swami Jana Nanma Jnana Thapaswi Saturday told reporters here that the 91-foot-high lotus-shaped hall named as ‘Parnasala’ is dedicated to Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru, the Ashram’s late founder.

Campaign to treat vascular diseases launched

New Delhi, August 07: A low-cost screening programme to mark the ‘National Vascular Week’ and spread awareness regarding vascular diseases in the country has been launched by Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.

The screening programme that began Friday will continue till Dec 31. The cost of the investigation has been reduced from Rs.14,000 to Rs.5,000.

It will offer a one-time vascular surgeon consultation plus ultrasound screening of carotid arteries, abdominal blood vessels and lower limb arteries.

Ten more dengue cases in Delhi

New Delhi, August 07: Delhi reported ten new cases of dengue Saturday, taking the total number of people affected by the mosquito-borne disease in the city to 107 this year, an official said.

‘Ten more people have tested positive for dengue in Delhi today (Saturday) but no deaths were reported,’ Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s chief medical officer N.K. Yadav told IANS.

One death due to dengue has been reported in Delhi this year.

Haryana releases Rs.50 mn for new military school

Chandigarh, August 07: The Haryana government Saturday released an amount of Rs.50 million for the construction of a new Sainik (military) School in the state.

To be located at Gothra Tappa Khori village in Rewari district, this will be the state’s second Sainik School, which train young boys for a career in the defence forces by preparing them for the National Defence Academy (NDA).

The new school will be constructed at a cost of Rs.250 million.

Class 3 student beaten by principal, arm fractured

Lucknow, August 07: The left arm of a Class 3 student of an Uttar Pradesh school was fractured after the principal allegedly beat him for making noise in the classroom, police said Friday.

The incident took place Thursday at the Igraham Public School of Aligarh district’s Bannadevi area. But it came to light Friday when police booked school principal S.N. Singh for beating eight-year-old Siddharth Kumar.

A fitting lesson to a lecherous teacher

Anantapur, August 07: It was students’ turn to teach a ‘lesson’ to their teachers who allegedly molested girl students studying in Class X at the Zilla Parishad High School at Uravakonda in Anantapur district. The teachers _ Daulat Khan and TK Ranga Prasad _ were beaten black and blue with slippers and sticks before being handed over to the police. Another teacher, P Dastagiri is absconding.

China gold mine fire kills 16

China, August 07: A fire broke out in a gold mine in eastern China, killing sixteen miners.

The mishap happened around 5pm on Friday, when about 300 people were working underground in Luoshan gold mine in Zhaoyuan city, officials said.Most of the victims were suffocated.

Seven miners remained trapped.By 8.30 a.m. Saturday, the underground blaze had been put out but power to parts of the shaft had yet to be restored.

Russia tests two ballistic missiles

Russia, August 07: Russia has conducted a successful test of two submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The two Sineva (NATO identification: SS-N-23) missiles were launched by the nuclear submarine Tula from the Barents Sea towards the Kura test range on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East.

“The warheads hit their targets at the expected time,” said a defence ministry spokesman.
