London, August 10: Researchers have found that women feel discriminated against when they apply for jobs like finance director, engineer or construction supervisor that are male dominated.

Women face issues while applying for jobs perceived as ‘masculine’ such as research and development manager, finance director, engineer or construction supervisor, reports express.co.uk.

A study by the University of Colorado – Denver business school found that if a woman is attractive, it is seen as a disadvantage for such job profiles.

Halliwell to create another ‘Spice Girls’?

London, August 10: Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell is reportedly creating a new group to follow in the footsteps of the pop-band.

The star, who shot to fame in the 1990s as a member of the Spice Girls along with bandmates Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm, has now recruited five wannabe pop stars to form a similar group, reports dailystar.co.uk.

According to reports, several record labels bosses are already said to be interested in signing Halliwell’s band.

Oscar winner Patricia Neal dies

New York, August 10: (DPA) Oscar-winning US actress Patricia Neal has died at the age of 84, it was announced Monday.

The actress, who was once married to author Roald Dahl, and had an ill-fated affair with actor Gary Cooper, passed away at her home in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard Sunday after succumbing to lung cancer.

‘She faced her final illness as she had all of the many trials she endured: with indomitable grace, good humour and a great deal of her self-described stubbornness,’ her family said in a statement.

Maha govt fears more oil spill

Maharashtra, August 10: The Maharashtra government today expressed fear of more oil spill on the Mumbai coast with over 500 containers lying on the deck of MSC Chitra which collided with MV Khalija-III.

“There were total 1,219 containers on the ship and 512 are on the deck which may fall into the water as the ship has tilted after the collision,” Principal Secretary of Relief and Rehabilitation Department, J S Saharia told reporters here.

10 kg RDX recovered in Poonch

New Delhi, August 10: About 10 kg RDX was today seized along with a cache of arms and ammunition when the Army unearthed a hideout in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Acting on a tip off, troops of 39 Rashtriya Rifle (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) launched a search and cordon operation in Magnar forest area late this afternoon, they said.

They unearthed a hideout and recovered 10 kg RDX, 3 kg gun powder, a Chinese hand grenade, two Rocket Projectile Grenade (RPG), a wireless set (Icom), 25 AK rounds and 70 pencil cells, police said.

Rupee up by 3 paise against US dollar

Mumbai, August 10: The Indian rupee today gained 3 paise to 46.12/13 against the US dollar, its highest close since June 21, 2010, on the back of firm domestic equity markets amid strong capital inflows.

The domestic currency started firm at 46.02/04 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange as against last weekend’s close of 46.15/16 a dollar.

First woman to head major US intelligence agency

Fort, Belvoir, August 09: The United States has had three female secretaries of state — but until now has never had a woman lead one of its 16 major intelligence agencies.

Letitia A. Long, 51, was praised by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, as the right person for the job, as she took up her post as director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in a ceremony Monday at the agency’s half-built, high-tech campus in Springfield, Va.

Marijuana seized in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, August 09: Two quintals of marijuana – valued at Rs.600,000 in the international market were seized in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district Monday and two people arrested, a police official said.

District police followed a vehicle and arrested two people near Kondagaon area while one person managed to escape, Mohsin Khan, in-charge Kondagaon police station, told over phone. Kondagaon is some 210 km south of capital Raipur.

CISF strength at airport doubled

Chennai, August 09: To increase security, CISF has nearly doubled its strength at Chennai airport, officials said today.

The strength has been increased from 456 to 800, top CISF officials said on condition of anonymity.

This will help in taking effective security measures, besides allowing CISF guards to work for stipulated eight hours, they said.

Three held for killing elephant; two tusks seized

Krishnagiri (TN), August 09: Three members of an elephant poaching gang were arrested and two tusks seized from them here today.

The three had killed a male elephant a few days ago in the Anchetty forest range and removed the tusks, District Forest Officer A K Ulaganathan said adding a search was on for another member of the gang.

Andhra to plant record 30 crore trees

Hyderabad, August 09: Andhra Pradesh Government today set an ambitious target to plant 30 crore trees during this year as part of its efforts to enhance green cover in the state.

About 25 lakh saplings were planted on a single day on July 16 against a target of 10 lakh plants, a release from the chief minister’s office said.

TRS threatens of a Gujjar-like agitation for Telangana

Hyderabad, August 09: TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao threatened of a ‘Gujjar-type’ agitation for separate Telangana after the Srikrishna Committee submits its report by December.

“All sections of Telangana are getting ready for the war after December. Revenue department employees met me recently. They said they will take part in the fight for Telangana. They are waiting for our call. Everybody is feeling that it is time to start a Gujjar-type agitation,” he said at the party’s executive committee meeting here.

Aamir falls ill, cancels promos of ‘Peepli Live’

Mumbai, August 09: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has had to cancel last-minute promotions of his production ‘Peepli Live’ as he is down with fever.

“Am feeling very helpless lying in bed a few days before the release. All the last lap interviews and promotions are cancelled 🙁 doomed (sic),” Aamir wrote on his Facebook page on Monday.

‘Peepli Live’, a satire on the farmers’ suicides and the subsequent media and political response, releases on August 13.

US plans massive weapons sale to Saudi Arabia

Washington, August 09: The US is drawing up a $30-billion sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia despite Israeli concerns about the proposed package, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The centerpiece of the package is eighty-four F-15 fighter jets and it also includes dozens of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters along with other equipment, the Journal reported, citing unnamed US officials.

Israel has expressed concerns about the provision of a rival like Saudi Arabia with sophisticated weapons which could endanger its security.

Woman arrested for killing mother-in-law

New Delhi, August 09: A 28-year-old woman was arrested for murdering her mother-in-law in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas area, police said Monday.

According to police, Poonam Rani murdered her mother-in-law after a quarrel.

“She stated that her mother-in-law (Sarwan Devi) scolded her on petty issues and was pressurizing her to do a B. Ed. course. On that fateful night she had some serious altercations and differences with her mother-in-law over this as Poonam was not interested in pursuing this course,” South Dist. DCP, H.G.S. Dhaliwal said.

Farooq asks OIC to help resolve Kashmir issue

Srinagar, August 09: The moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference today sought the intervention of Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to help resolve the Kashmir issue.

In a memorandum addressed to OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Hurryat Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said OIC should convene a session of its contact group on Kashmir.

Court issues NBW against two in Ayodhya case

Lucknow, August 09: A local court today issued non- bailable warrants against two accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case, who had continuously remained absent from proceedings.

Other than the NBWs against Laxminarayan Das Mahatyagi and Om Prakash Pandey, the court also issued production warrant against another accused, Jay Bhagwan Gopal.

The court fixed August 17 as the next date of hearing.
